Suggestion: slow down, focus more on a solid foot work/stance/ steps foundation. The Kwan Dao is a heavy two hand weapon, with all the upper body/torso / two arms swinging, cutting, chopping movements, it is easily become upper body heavy, lower body light which might create a balance/topple problem. , With a solid footwork lower body foundation, the upper torso would become flexible, fast and powerful. Practice on Kwan Dao, it is not the fast speed the better, it is the momentum and power.
@TheAlireza247 there is no right or wrong. also depends on what your motive is. If for actual combat you use alot like a halberd more of a spinning slashing type of combat. those who make up there own techniques and way of fighting are usually the best, because people cant read your moves easily. Bruce Lee. learned the basics then made his own art. Myamoto musashi same thing. all the best warriors in history create there own styles.
Wow! taking too much space. So those around be careful.....he needs a biiger area for his show!Caution! Guan Dao on the move..........!!! why so short and end so abruptly...not good show the whole duration!
Really good job...I'm about to get a Guan Dao myself, can't wait to harness my skills. btw....love the random ppl in the background watching, i'd watch in awe too if you were on my street randomly flailing that beautiful tool of war around.
While not my favorite weapon, it is one that requires skill to use properly.
While i don't know what this one weighed, my master's stiff blade guan do is over 10kg, and i know from freestyling with it that without a solid stance you tend to get thrown around a lot.
A nice form also, and one i haven't seen before. I like the three spinning jumps at the end, they are fun to do, but i always get really dizzy after doing them lol.
Again with the god of war. First there is a difference between God and a god in the English language. Second, he was a war lorg fighting side by side with Liu bei. He is well respected and remembered and that's why he is nicknamed Guan gong. He is no god ow war but his figure is mentioned in many Chinese operas
@jingang you are not entirely correct while it is true that Guan Yu was a historical person he has since his death bean deified as the god of war common practice in china to deify the spirits of exceptional people after they have died especially generals and philosophers
@jingang well he was considered the God of War. He was a master of strategy , one on one combat , and at leading troops wich is why he had the title. he was one of the best all around fighters. today he is the God of Wealth in china, because of his honor and loyalty in the three kingdoms era. and its said praying to him brings good luck.
I have yet to see a better performance with a "real" guan dao on Youtube. Extremely well done. I dare ANYONE to post a better performance with a full weight, i.e. NOT a 'wushu' floppy lightweight Guan Dao. Let's see it. Anyone who has had one of these in their hands knows how good this guy's performance really is.
second thought: exhaustion starts at 0:30... seems like he forgot breathing at the beginning... maybe thats the reason the precision of his movements doesnt meet the standard that he sat in the first 30 seconds.. ask kim about it! well, possibly too late anyways... got a new vid of how this guy developed?
question: how long/heavy is the weapon and wheres the center of gravity? need to build one for training...
rezitiert, are you sure you want to pick apart this guy's performance and you referring to yourself as a "pro" without a SINGLE video yourself doing ANYTHING?? Why don't you post a video response first before sounding so silly?
cool form, cool weapon! but you can actually see how your muscles cant sustain the effort from the beginning to the end... thats a reason why some techniques get kinda sloppy to the end... but ur still young, right ? =) also ur overall bodytension could be improved... will help you with jumps and turns... try moving on ice, that helps a lot! btw: these are tips from pro for pro, so shut up anyone who thinks i insulted him!!!
why so mean?? i did see these weaknesses and it would be unfair not to explain them!! and i dont do fixed forms, i just "go with the flow", thats better for the mind... video will go up as soon as im confident with the result.. dont be insulted, please, as i didnt even talk to you, but the performer! show him my comment and the video, and he may very well find my notes usefull! and that pro-thing: that means: only morons feel insulted, the performer wouldnt!! trained body=trained mind itc!
As you can see, I've posted this video almost two years ago when my Shidi was still a beginner with the Chun Qiu dao. If he waited till he is confident of his skill than I bet he'd never want me to post a video of him.
My Shidi told me he won't be insulted by your comment. He is only insulted by amateurs who give advice like they really understand something, but you're obviously a pro
what would be "fair" is to post YOUR version or ANYTHING for that matter (you have nothing on your channel), THEN explain how YOU know and how YOU are a "pro" and THEN and ONLY THEN should you describe someone elses "weaknesses". Jingang is not being "so mean", but he should probably just ignore your post, because without some alternative video to see, your comments are completely meaningless.
No style. Most of the original weapon applications come from military families and only in the last few hundred years appeared in "styles". Most of the "styles'" forms where either invented by the practitioners of the art or where copied and absorbed into the art itself. In the past there was a famous form called 18 methods of Da-dao. The form you see in this video contains 9 out of the 18 Da-dao methods.
hey man, great job. nothing but good things to say. I practice Hung Gar and i just started learning 9 ring dao tonight. It isn't as big as the kwan dao but it has the same principles. anyway, excellent job. keep training
It's very nice but you need to work on your stances "they're are a bit high and unclear" and you need to practice (speed, grace and agility) (3 main goals for this Dao. An inspiring movie futuring this Dao is; Curse of the Golden Flower - you need to perform fast, gracefuly and wildly like the "Cown Prince" fighting off his dad soldiers to protect his mum???
I actually watched that movie. Although I myself only practiced this weapon for a very short time (It's not me on the video) but I can tell you that Zhou jielun (the guy from the movie) has no clue what so ever how to use this weapon. Moreover his weapon is most likely very light. speed, grace and agility are requirements for competition and are meaningless in the battlefield. But you are right about his stance being too high, and you are not the first to point that out (shifu was the first).
About speed...well, you do need it at the battlefield but different weapons are used in different speed. The heavy weapons are not as fast as the light ones but are harder to block cause of their momentum. If you have a Jian and you are faster you will most likely stab someone with a Da dao, and than you die cause it will go right trough you and the Jian. That's why even someone with an agile weapon must also be smart.
actually isnt your stance fine for practical purposes hieght of your stance depends on the situation, some styles have high stances and some low etc etc but really it depends on yoru enviroment etc right? and who ever said it was slow and stuff, have you ever felt how heavy a real one of those things is?? the only way your gonna get that thing to go fast is if you practice with it in your hands everyday for hours, i bet fighters back in the day could do it fast but they had the time to practice
but in modern times we dont have 8 hours of free time to train do we? its frustratingly sad. this guys form is just fine, i like how in many parts how clean and in control of his weapon he is. the only one who could really critique this is himself or his sifu
@papageorgio123123: An excellent comment. All too often people on Youtube think they're qualified to criticize the technique of others and rarely realize they have no place in doing this.
Often when practising forms and other, low stances are used for the sole purpose of strengthening your legs, when on the battlefield a low stance can be good for like taking a kick or something but being in a high stance is best for movement etc.
Oh...forgat to mention...you're teqhnic is really good, although the weapon is havy, you move really good. I like taht you train with a real DaDao and not with one of those monern weapons that bends and whait less then 2 kilo. If you mouve this good with this heavy weapon then with a normal DaDao you have to mouve really quich. Again, even if the weapon is heavy...relax you're sholders and use you're internal energy, not the external one. :)
Wow, this is a great weapon, and u , obviusly r skilled with this weapon, no sorry u r great, u make a exellent performance, congratulations is one of the best performance i see in youtube, one more time congratulations
They chinese always try to make you where that dress.. :) not for me..
Besides, if i spend all my time on choosing what to wear for practice i won't have time to actually practice :)
Thanks for all the comments, I have since practiced a lot (and hopefully will soon have a new vid) and it's much better now. even the concrete agrees :D
Actually, i know how it feels to practice with DaDao. Mine has up to 7 kilograms :(, I would not give you an advice if i would not know something about this weapon and what exersaing with it feels. Here's another advice :): Try to use you're internal energy rather they you're external energy. I will have a friend of mine filming me while practicing with DaDao. Maby you'l watch it, maby you won't. Non the less, this weapon is really hard to master :(
We practice martial arts and not "Cool dress martial arts". Some people put too much stress on "Cool Traditional look-alike clothes" and not enough on practicing seriously.
Great kwan do work. Slight overextension in the slices but that could be part of your style. Pretty long form. I think you hurt the concrete when the blade sliced it....made that distinct clang.
da dao form, is a dificult and heavy weapons. It need a very strong arms, coordination good footwork, but the most important thing is a ``brave spirit´´, because general kwang kung used this weapon wich it weight at least 50 klg, so good luck and keep practicing...

looks good, my advice though is to mind your stances... its a common thing for practitioners to compromise proper stance for flow, and even though this looks VERY good for 2 months, I would advise you to maybe practice standing in each step and sinking into the proper stance. just a suggestion :) keep up the good work dude!
thanks! i actually do practice like that. standing each stance and getting the feeling of where the power flows. still need a lot more practice before i can yield this sword with no effort :)
pretty cool! I like that!! This is quite a long form. It must be very tiring. How heavy is your da dao? IMHO, I think you could add a bit more of waist movement but i don't know how heavy the weapon is and how long you've been practicing. (it's fun to see some people who stop to watch you!) Is it pigua or baji? or something else?
thanks :) yeah i still have a lot of work ahead of me.. the sword is very heavey, but that's an up-side, since afterwards most weapons are sooo light :P i've been practicing the DaDao for 2 months and it's fun and very interesting since because of it's weight i can more easily feel the differences in weight distribution during movements so it actually improves my skill not just using the sword itself.
