  • Christ guys, he was joking..

  • Comment removed

  • Dara needs gamefaqs

  • I think someone should have told Dara that you can enter a code in RB to unlock all the songs.

  • viewer 44444

  • Dumpert

  • This week's xbox monday musing is directly ripped off from this!

  • To Dara, I say that is what cheats, the few that there are, are for :)

To 6oodfella, I say I pine for the days of GTA2

  • WHOA WHOA WHOA WHOA WHOA..... WHOA... Maps by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs is on Rock Band?

  • Why do all comedians recycle their material all the fucking time? I've heard O'Briain's game rant 3 times already in different settings...

  • @Insubordinate90 I know, right! I mean, come on, it's not like The Beatles ever played the same song twice!

  • @Insubordinate90 its called touring. when the comedian does the same stand up show in different cities.

  • @Insubordinate90 Also, they hold back using new material so they can save as much as possible for their next tour.

  • Jesus, Dara has large hands.

  • I don't know whose idea it was to put a toll booth on the bridge in GTA IV, but I hope their next shit is a hedgehog. Let's hope they go back to the good old GTA days of fun.

  • When you buy a book, you gain access to all the content, same a a video game. However, there are certain systems in place that prevent you from immediately getting to 'the good part'. In a video game, that is a gating system. In a novel, it is the narrative itself: if you skip ahead (the only real change to a video game is that you cannot skip ahead) you can get to the good stuff, but more likely than not it will make no sense without having read the lead-in.

  • @samwise210 The same is true of music (you like the chorus/ a specific verse, and you can skip ahead, but chances are you are missing something important) and a movie (again, you can skip to the ending, but you may not understand what is going on).

Narratives that follow a certain path have always been a gating system have always restricted us. The only change is that video games make it more obvious.

This does not apply to Guitar Hero, though. That's just the designers being dicks.

  • @samwise210 Also, to clarify: By gating system in a video game, I mean a learning curve, which is what the designers put in to make sure you can do (or at least have a decent chance at) the later content.

While books don't have such an obvious curve, if you don't understand something, while you can go on, you may want to re-read the section you just finished, so that you can better understand the remaining sections.

  • I heart Dara and would love to play video games with him

  • well... rockband has cheats, but i dont want to ruin his joke SO IGNORE THIS

  • love what he says about Rock Band x)

  • and do you know whats behind the third door? ANOTHER FOOKIN DOOR! hahahhaa

  • Don't really find this funny LOL He's just complaining :P

  • I love his quote from 1:57

    haha

  • Why isn't a game designer talking about this? Cause they're not feckin' funny, Dara is and if you don't think so you can go watch family guy or some other shite that serves their comedy to you lukewarm and drowned in the tears of good comedy appreciators, no one's stopping you.

  • Dara's a comedic genius and he makes a wondrously true point. You are all either trolling or you are not listening. There's no other option, honestly, because if you listened you'd be laughing or at LEAST agreeing.

  • What a dumb video. Why is this guy on TV talking about videogames?

  • Fuck he's got it so right on the GTA IV bit...sitting in that goddamn traffic pisses me off like crazy.

  • God that was not funny at all

  • Has this man never heard of GameFAQs?

  • ive never completed gears of war either i get to the bit in the end of the level where you have a minute and you have to run to the vheicle otherwise that big thing allways destroys it i never seen about 20% of the game im on manhatan in gta 4 but not any further than that really and well if you want to know about guitar hero just watch my videos

  • Game Designer in study, here.

    Taking notes on this. ;)

  • fuck that door

  • Thats my content, and I want it!

  • I was with him until he expressed a dislike for Mountain, Mississiippi Queen is one of my favourite songs on GH3.

  • @howxat really i mean come on there are some great songs on gh3

  • Once again the peon masses of youtube reject their own enjoyment of a video so that they can argue amongst themselves. Keep swinging your dicks around, youtube users! Someday their swishing shall be heard!

  • @afrojayjay Pretentious hypocrite.

  • @eightySeventh Swish-swish.

  • @eightySeventh Boom. ;3

  • Good points all around. Cheating means nothing in games- why should you have to buy an aftermarket book to teach you how to enjoy the software you already paid good money to own?

  • Dara, there is a code to unlock all the songs :(

  • has he never heard of cheat codes?

  • .... there's 89% of gears of war that I never saw, because of that fucker and a door... lol

  • Oh Dara, you poor thing, Mississippi Queen is a fantastic song.

  • You know, I find it refreshing that Dara is admitting that he is basically a new bred casual gamer. He doesn't get all the rules and ideas of games, but he has his own enjoyment and can joke about how bad he is.

  • The gaming industry needs more (and it pains me to say this because anyone who uses such moronic words to describe a certain "type" of gamer is a prick) "non-hardcore gamers" working on games who can give a normal perspective on games. I completely agree with Dara. I would give anything to be able to skip the terrible poison ivy fight in Batman:AA, which is other wise a great game.

  • @charlesr456 Damn, I actually really enjoyed that fight (which was horrible in its own way, but somehow rewarding at the end,) But i totally know how you feel, I totally could have done without having to deal with some of the bosses in Ninja Gaiden 2 like that lightning god man, I mean what the fuck, thats just pseudo-masochism. I hate that game just for being full of evil nasty unwinnable fights.

  • He used this in his new standup was amazing

  • Yeah they deny us content, but we keep buying them!

  • I get what he's saying, but I guess his problem is that he didn't buy a The Who Air Guitar Electronic Toy but a game.

Games are not toys. Games can involve toys, but the definition of a game is "a ruleset applied to an activity". A game that doesn't require effort to progress is not a game but an interactive slideshow.

The comment about GTA is valid critique, although I would point out that if you think the cops chasing you is a hassle, you're playing the wrong game.

  • Dude, cheat =}D

  • I shared his frustration of getting stuck on levels and being unable to progress, then I discovered MMORPG's. Never looked back.

  • OH wud you idiot geeks stop and think for a second. I played games all througout the 80s and 90s. He is right that its the only medium that denies you content. And he is a funny man. So shut up all you hardcore spods and just accept that games arent being blasted as antisocial for ONCE

  • How many of you have careers on Comedy panel shows or stand up comedians? Its extremely refreshing to have cool people admitting they are more like us than we thought. Just accept it and stop being such stupid spods making every1 hate you lol

Ive heard of Mountain - you don't see me complaining! lol JUST LAUGH!

  • lets hope this 2012 solar wind fucks up this bs.world has gone to fuck.

  • i was offerring him food . 11percent done aint shit, but loved the vid

  • ...you know what's behind door number two? there's annother FOOKIN DOOR! hahahaha, i think i said that when playing GOW

  • Another fucking door!

  • If Dara thinks the Berserker was hard, I don't know how he would respond to the FUCKING THERON GUARDS

Woah, look at all that juice.

    MAKE IT STOP.

  • @uknmajor you've got a point. People take you more seriously if you don't talk shit. Example was I was being repeatedly killed in red dead redemption by a guy. I was thinking wow he's good but then he put his headset on and ruined it all by talking crap. I no longer so him as pro but a douchebag with too much time

  • He does have a point, but games combat what he is saying by having an easy mode and if you can't do the easy mode buy a easier game!

  • "there's another f****in door

  • He has a real point with music games like rock band, but I think that the challenge a game offers is essential. Without it, the game isn't enjoyable. Also, I think that he must be new to modern games if he can't complete these games on easy difficulty.

  • yay for unlock all cheat codes!!! damned if i admit to my mates that ive never beaten all the songs on easy first!

  • Gotta love Dara O'briain and a valid fucking point.

  • stop putting such long comments

  • Yeah that's 11% into the game... what means you really SUCK lol

  • I don't want to start an arguement but I must ask, why are you taking this so seriously? He makes a valid point about the unlocking content. I'm guessing they asked Dara to be on the show because he's a comedian, not a games expert! OR a gamer in general. He's 38 years old, give him a break.

  • @Chris246t8kr Roughly 90% of "hardcore gamers" are total pricks with no sense of compassion. They're even worse when they're commenting on YouTube videos.

  • Good point :-).

  • @UKNMajor This is what I'm talking about.

I don't know you. Maybe you have a lot of friends and people generally think you're a nice guy. Maybe that's very common. That's not the point, though.

It's this ridiculous sense of arrogance that comes with it. Many will get competitive over how hardcore they are. Who cares?

I know people who play terrible 360 games just for the Achievements. When you do that, you're so "hardcore" you don't even care whether or not you enjoy games any more. Pricks.

  • There are many wannabe hardcore games, too many of them in fact. These guys are not pro gamers, not close.

What I class as a pro gamer? Able to beat someone at a game over and over every single game (99% of the time) as a huge substantial rate i.e. big k/d ratio, decent accuracy, teamplay.

Also, a pro gamer will be able to pick up any game, play it for a few weeks or a month, and become one of the best players at that game.

People who boast, are normally not pro gamers.

  • In fact, pro gamers are normally quiet, say too much and your seen as just a normal gamer. Hide behind the gamer tag and let the gameplay talk, and you'll be seen in a different way.

Every single FPS I have played and I become one of the best, it's not boasting or being an idiot, it's just who I am. I played a game called Enemy Territory on the PC and I become one of the best players in the UK, if not the world (I played within the UK and was top 10).

  • Guess what. Nobody gives a toss.

  • I regret not going to LANS or competitions, but I was too young. I then played Battlefield 2 and 2142 and became pro on the PC. Now I play on the PS3 and I am a seriously good player on CODMW2, rarely I get beaten in a game, and if I do, it's to do with glitchers or lamers.

  • @eightySeventh That's not hardcore; That's obsessive completionist mentality. "Hardcore" gamers wouldn't beat Skate 57: Nuts to Rail to 100% if they thought it was a casual piece of crap. The term indicates someone that enjoys challenging or original and unique games, either single-player or competitively in a tough multi-player scene, while the antonym (casual) implies someone who plays simple games with a low difficulty level designed for people who are unfamiliar or unskilled at video games.

  • no, you are a prick

  • That's because I'm also a comedian and I made a valid point about his newbity

  • @mrvlhs I see your point, but let's pretend there was a popular comedian and he had an interest in making spaceships (though he wasn't particularly good at it). Let's say Charlie Brooker is making a "Charlie Brooker's Spaceshipwipe" show and wants guests to talk about their experiences making spaceships in an entertaining way. Bearing in mind it's a comical show and not aimed exclusively at spaceship builders, would it be better to get boring old Dr Spaceship expert or the comedian?

  • @eightySeventh - look i'm not from the uk, i don't know what show is this or even if it's supposed to be funny. All I'm saying is that he's trying to make jokes out of stuff that is completelly wrong. He's not only joking but he's criticizing the whole videogame industry and althought I also don't like the videogame industry, I have other and valid reasons for it. He can be amusing and entertaing with stuff that don't put his intelligence at jeopardy. At least that's what I think

  • So does that mean he's never played the games? Or that he's the only one who played them like that? He may not be good - as a serious gamer - but his points stand. Many or most people don't see the end of the games they buy. Lots of the content remains locked, even in games like Guitar Hero, when buying it for songs they aren't allowed to play. (Assume we don't all know about GameFAQs, cheats, etc... that unlock it in a second.)

  • shut it you mug

  • @Chris246t8kr

    because people are sometime stupid.

  • @Chris246t8kr He actually is quite an avid gamer. It's just a point he finds amusing.

  • @Omgonthe123 That was a year ago, I understand he is a gamer and a comedian.

  • Terrible analogy... you also don't skip chapters in a book do you? Why would you in a game? It messes up the whole story.

Have you considered that probably one doen't need to be that good at video games, it's you who sucks a lot? Lol. Why would you want to be on TV complaining of you playing bad? Shouldn't you be spending that time playing? You would probably pass the level if you did lol.

When you buy a car are they also denying you content if you don't have a drivers licence?

  • @mrvlhs: "you also don't skip chapters in a book do you?"

have you seen a book which has a chapter copied from phone book? or chapters being a verbatim copy of previous chapter?

    he's point stands.

generally, adjusting game difficulty (in those games which actually allow it) also doesn't help as gap between difficulties very often is too big: you can't get better on easy, and you die too soon to learn anything on other difficulties.

  • @Dummy00001 "you can't get better on easy, and you die too soon to learn anything on other difficulties." That's vecause you fail at being a human being

  • @mrvlhs He wasn't talking about himself specifically, he was talking about people in general. Idiot.

  • Come on... i thought you were brighter than that Dara. In first place, nowadays games are too damn easy. GTA IV is piece of cake... it was made so that anyone could pass it lol.

Secondly, why would you want to play the next level if you suck on the current? You know it's not going to get any easier so you better train this one good to be able to pass the next one. You need to learn to crawl before you learn to walk.

  • And thirdly, you know how games work, you know that most game systems are based on leveling and unlockiing stuff. It's called a reward system and it's what makes games addictive and so interesting and fun to play.

I kind of understand your point about content, but still...

  • ... Poor guy, apparently his copy of Gears has permanent death. And GTA4. And Guitar whatever.

Come on now, games today are TOO easy. You get infinite tries for petes sake!

Is he really too lazy to reload and try again? Or does he just do it on ultra hard the first time, then give up at the first death?

Bah. Back in the day, games were HARD. In Homeworld, you had to manage resources a LOT, and if you just squeaked by one level, you were screwed the next.

  • @tehSmoo Infinite tries? Crazy! Back in my day, the cartridge would BURN UP if you died more than five times in the course of a game.

  • seeing dara in march

    cant

    fucking

    wait

  • someone tell him tthat you don't have to drive normally in gta4. you can crash!

  • 3:03 " Pirate games" Wow!

  • If only Dara knew that you can lose the police quicker than a cold in GTA IV.

  • i love this man. he is freaking hilarious

  • He is amazing, really want to see him live
