I heard distilled water is non conductive, i heard what makes the water electrically conductive it's the impurities, so a dirt water will even be more conductive than normal water, but distilled water is cleaned, hummm...
pure distilled water, means H2O itself, is non conductive.
However, it solves "impurities", means ions from the oxidated coats of any metal parts (except pure gold/platin :D) in the pc. ...so youll have impured water again :(
BTW some guys from the unniversity of my place, have a video somewhere of their pc inside a aquarium with fishes, they said they invented something that makes the water not to touch the water, i have no clue what they used, but looks pretty awesome.
Well duh, but i've seen som other vids while the fans are still on the hardware when it's submerged... I just give it the thought, it could really stress out the fan engines on them and maybe short circuit something else (I know the oil is non-conducting)
I wonder if you made a custom setup to just put the heatsinks in oil, instead of the whole motherboard. If it would work just as good. Like a heatsink with a small container filled with oil w/pump and a oil cooling radiator, could still be fanless without getting oil on everything.
No, oil cooling is FAR more efficient. But normal water cooling wont kill the resale value of the parts. It'd probably be VERY diffucult to sell an oil soaked GPU or CPU.
one question do you have to seal off the cpu with silicone, i have looked at pugets design and they say they will skip it next time, just wondering if any one else has skipped it, and dose the mineral oil have any corrosive values to it?
Mineral oil is like any other, basically the opposite of corrosive. Some oils like cooking oil will leave buildup though. I've installed peltiers where you actually have to fill the cpu socket with oil before installing to get every bit of air out, then seal around it; I've never had any ill effects from doing this...
There's a tiny hole in each hd to let some air in, the hd requires this because it makes the drive heads float just off the platter. Without it they'll just tear the platters to shreds.
what about solid state drives....they have no moving parts sooo...i guess it would be okay...and do you have to change the oil every now and then and how often??
um... Do you know anything about Mineral Oil? How bout you do some research before you go posting stupid comments about nothing. It's an efficient and quiet way to Cool your Computer. Mineral Oil does not conduct Electricity, so... you can submerge your computer in it and it will short circuit...
When flash drives come out on a lower price you should try using one of those and put it in the mineral oil. If I build another computer i'm gonna do this. Btw, do you ever have to change out the oil?

you take them out, that's the point of having and oil cooled computer, no fans needed to keep things cool.

One tiny question: The hard drive can also be submerged in oil correct? It's just that the oil would slow down the read/write speeds...right?
helidanx 3 years ago
NOOOOOOOO! Never submerge the HD's!
They let the oil in, and ur Hd's gone...
On the top of the HD u have some Holes (often near the holes ist written: Do not cover this holes) They let the oil in.
DOSystems 3 years ago
Haha! XD, okay. I know it sounded like a dumb question (it probably was) but I just had to ask.
