I would love to see you guys do a episode dedicating on artist like Greg Horn and Greg Land. especially on the porn faces and tracing adn whatever rant you can do on them. I admit, I find Greg Land art entertaining in a comedic way on his current issues on Amazing.

guys have you heard the horrible news, the people who own the rights to buffy the vamp want to make a new film and reboot the series, and whedon wont be involved!
The last set of episodes are great. Maybe it was the change of scenery or the time of day but you both seemed more relaxed. Jose's anecdotes lead to a nice conversation in this episode. I enjoy when you two discuss topics that are on the periphery of the meat and potatoes of comics. The corn if I may. Or you can forget the dinner plate analogy and call it the comic "culture". But I gotta say the word culture is kind of cardboardy. Wouldn't you rather eat some corn?
Elliot is right! can't read this stuff on the subway! In japan graphic stuff is common and can be discussed almost anywhere. I've gotten rude comments from ladies who have seen me read magazines such as Maxim in store newstand and I was five feet away from them. The cover ticked them off from afar. This reminds me of the bruhaha over the Heidi Klum Guitar Hero commercial. The Censored US version had her wearing a loose shirt but the European version had her wearing just a bra.
I got into comics in 2007 and reading the wording was a little difficult and still is in regards to the train of thought. One reason why I cant get into manga is because it's read so different. I was watching the last Fringe episode and noticed how they mentioned the multiverse as if it were this new concept and realized I never would have known of it had I not read comics. After comic books you kind of expect people to already know about these sci-fi elements which aren't that common.
Jose did U read any Clamp Manga? they are my favorite Manga team.
A by the way Elliott, if you want to know how manga being writing there is an amazing manga called Bakuman, it is drawing and writing by the team that did DEATH NOTE! and it is about to kids that starting to write Manga together. it tell exactly what are the steps in writing a Manga and the steps in which manga is being chosen to by an ongoing series.
and if you thing in Gantz there are alot of boobs read Air Gear.
Manga is much more easy to read be my opinion because in most manga series there isn't the thing with word balloon on under another and in most manga that translate to English, in the last page (the last page on the left) there is a STOP sign and a page that tell you, with a picture, how to read it. For my is easier because the way the magna writing is the same way the I write in Hebrew.
the english language is meant to be read left to right so manga now is a pain in the arse, I used to read quite a bit of manga when companies bothered to flop the comics.
I just listened to the beginning of this episode again. How come you never mentioned you're friends with Avi Arad? No wonder you're biased against DC.
i started reading manga and then moved onto comics but since the nearest comic shop is an hour away ive been reading more manga than comics since i can read them online for free.
battle royale was a good read i really enjoyed that manga, the first thing that comes to mind is the kid who ended up with the fork i felt sorry for him and yet i couldnt help but laugh, lol.
Funny - I'm having the same experience as your friend - I *finally* managed to convince a friend of mine at work who's a fan of everything from Russian lit to Chuck Palahniuk to sci-fi and fantasy to at least TRY reading a comic, which he claims just "aren't really his thing" which we all know is code for "that kiddy bullshit is beneath me". So I leant him Sandman vol. 1, and in the time it's taken him to read a bunch nof novels, he still hasn't finished it because he just finds it hard to read.
He also claims that it "flows weird" to him, like he feels it's missing bits of information, which I guess is another thing us longtime comics readers take for granted - the ability to interpret a series of seperate still images as a single continuous, fluid narrative.
It's really not hard to believe at all, it's just -like the boys are saying - something we all take for granted. It's not an inherently easy or natural way to read, and it is something you have to learn. We've just been doing it for so long that it seems like we've always known it, and like E (or was it J?) said, if we grew up reading comics as a kid, it's something we learned as we were developing, which is a hell of a lot easier than trying to read a comic for the first time at 28.
I guess you're right. But even so, if there anything I'd think first timers'd have difficulty with, its understanding which dialogue box(is that what they're called?) comes before the next and which is which characters voice. Other than that, which shouldn't be too hard to comprehend after a while, I can't imagine someone who's used to novels and such having trouble with comics, especially if their opened up to something like Rulk, a comic one could finish a stop light.
I still can't wrap my head around it. Like you said, perhaps because I'm so used to it. But then again comics are so simple and staightforward its a wonderment to think one would give up one them for sheer inability to process it. Very strange.
Trust me, it's because you're used to it. Anything can seem daunting or complicated to someone who's not used to it. It's like trying to get your grandma to play video games.
my grandmother is just hooked on black tar... she walked onto the street right after they paved it before it cooled down. now she's hooked on it and can't walk away. i have to bring her food and clean her bedpan right out there in the fuckin street. fuuuuck
Actually I had the experience once of showing the Dr. Strange: Shamballa graphic novel to someone in high school and she literally could not read the first page, because it required the reader to interpret separate, silent panels without words as if the panels were frames of a movie.
But yeah, that's exactly what I'm talking about, Hammy (can I call you Hammy?) We all do that kind of shit instinctively now, but it's just not that way for the normies.
I really don't think Rulk is that bad. I have read WAY worse than that, and it kept me entertained for the all of ten minutes it took me to read the first three issues.
Really interesting insights into something that we may be taking for granted: the ability to interpret comic books correctly. I have to agree that it seems some artists and writers are trying to get too clever and its hard to figure out the order on spreads.
PS, glad you are enjoying Gantz. I think Gantz and Battle Royale illustrate just how far Japanese comic books are beyond American ones.
Hopefully we will be doing a Battle Royale review in the near future. Ya, I know the series has been out for like 4 years in the U.S. but Elliott's never read them. Better late than never, right?
I've only recently starting getting into manga after reading Death Note, which I loved. There's a used bookstore right near work that has an awesome selection of manga, but there's so much of it and it's a medium I know so little about that apart from a couple big names I don't know what's shit and what's good, or even necesarily all the different kinds of titles I'd like.
I guess that's what the internet's for. I'll keep an eye out for Gantz.
I love Death Note! The novel, "The Los Angerlos BB Murders" is highoy recommended, too, if you haven't gotten your hands on it yet. Its prequel that stars L and the untimely departed and gorgeous Noami as they investigate a case of unusual murders in LA. There aren't any Death Notes or Shinigamis or anything of that ilk, but its an extremely engrossing book regardless. As a fan of the series theres no doubt you'll greatly enjoy it. Recommened to those of you just looking for a good book, too.
i just finished reading X-Men Forever Alpha #1, and at the end they had a preview for the beggining of the new series.god talk about shitty art -artists might like to show less muscle deffinition now but it sure has suffered their knowledge of posture and movement.
also in the old and (new preview one) i also noticed the flow of pictures and how it seems to be more like camera positioning - than more intricate portraits.
most people dont know how to conceptualise the artwork - to"read" it
I h8 Geoff Johnz cause heez stoopid and his Flash is like sooooo boring, snoozers, and hiz Green Lantern is also boooring and stuff. Also I heer he wetz the bed.
But if we have the gay then we wouldn't like the big boobs and the hourglass bodies so then we wouldn't want to bring it on. Instead we will be reviewing the video game Cho Aniki. Hope you boyz like that instead.
That depends...are you in the mood to visit a YMCA or join the Navy? If the answer to either of those questions is 'yes', then yes, you have just been 'gayed.'
I say as long as Elliott's on board with the big boobs that he should change the name of this channel to the Comic Big Boobs And Hourglass Bodies Warrior YouTube channel.
But why waste time tracing said big tits and hourglass bodies when you can just scan in the picture and retouch it with Photoshop? That's how a real artist like Greg Horn creates dammit!
Waid's story's are not impressing me either. You say BFTC is predictible, I coulda told you how his 24/7 story was gonna end!
Spider-Man is just "DERP" now! It's really just going nowhere. Under JMS, it was going places and felt mature. Now, its just recycled premises and really bad jokes.
mike mckone draw people having sex dolls expression, no wonder, marvel picked the perfect artist to draw impled old people sex ont he last page of the first Amazing Spider-man 24/7
Coincidental to Elliot's worry about being seen on public transport with racy manga: on the latest Fanboy Radio there was an interview with a dude from the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund talking about a manga collector in the US who had his house raided by the FBI and is going to prison for several years because out of the huge shipment of manga he was importing from Japan (sight unseen, I believe) a tiny portion of it had some "lolita" imagery in it, which is legal there but not here. Ouch.
Holy shit! I just noticed that . And here I've been using only one "t" all this time. Elliot( I did it again!) must have been crying himself to sleep every time I've done that. Hahahahah...just thinking about that is funny.
hey great vid as usual guys. i have a question for you two. i read a post someone wrote saying that they think batman doesnt belong in the DC U but more with vertigo. what do you say to that?
You're kidding right Elliot? Everyone knows that Bats belongs in the Ultraverse. Yeesh.
On a serious note though I wouldn't mind seeing a Bats book put out in the current Vertigo fashion. There are definitely older Batman stories that sure did feel like something Vertigo would put out.
But what would a Batman book in "the current Vertigo fashion" be? Even MORE dark and gritty than usual? More swearing and violence? I dunno... I think part of what makes Batman work is the way the stories have to toe the line between grim and gritty street level crime/detective stories and action-packed spandex superhero stories. Making Batman a Vertigo book just seems like an excuse to go all Garth Ennis Punisher with it.
Maybe it can be Batman living in a hidden community of fairy tale characters in the middle of a big city. Then I can read one trade and give up because it takes four volumes to get going.
Which reminds me, have you heard of Billy Harrington? He's this gay porn star that Japanese internet geeks are obsessed with for some reason and they make hundreds of weird mashup music videos with the same one or two porn movies featuring him... they celebrate his birthday and call it the "Aniki Sex Festival". He's apparently gotten so popular there he actually came to Japan for this year's Aniki Sex Festival to do a personal appearance at some event or something they set up.
or they could do a story where Batman is the last living man on Earth and instead of Robin as a sidekick, he could have a pet monkey. Now that's comic book gold.
And after he's done fighting white collar crime he has to go home to his wife who no longer finds him atractive and has been sleeping with his young assistant, Dick Grayson. Think of the possibilities man!
People like comic-craft are good at what they do but sometimes I think they get too obsessed by the technology rather than the reading experience.
My favourite letterers are still people like the late Tom Frame in the uk, Tom Orzechowski, ken bruzenak, todd klein and the best in my opinion of them all is John Workman who works with Walt Simonson so much.
You read any of John Workman's comics (he writes and draws too)?
Some cartoonists with nice lettering styles that probably wouldn't look right over other people's art: Dave Sim, Charles Schulz, Daniel Clowes, Robert Crumb.
never read any of workmans own stuff, I'd like to get some back issues of star*reach sometime for sure.
Dave Sim is pretty under-rated when it comes to art, page design, cover design and lettering, I think his controversial comments a few years ago made him persona non grata in some peoples eyes.
I would love to see you guys do a episode dedicating on artist like Greg Horn and Greg Land. especially on the porn faces and tracing adn whatever rant you can do on them. I admit, I find Greg Land art entertaining in a comedic way on his current issues on Amazing.

Well in order to comprehend Rulk all you need is to have graduated from the first grade. Anybody should be able to understand it.
J.
comicculturewarrior 2 years ago
I dunno, would a first grader get the sublime subtlety of the "Oh the humanity!" Hindenburg reference? I think not.
Nkerklaan 2 years ago
ROFL!!!
You are so right about that. He he...
J.
comicculturewarrior 2 years ago
I really don't think Rulk is that bad. I have read WAY worse than that, and it kept me entertained for the all of ten minutes it took me to read the first three issues.
Nkerklaan 2 years ago
in order to comprehend Rulk, you have to beat yourself in the head with a hammer until your retarded enough to think that it's enjoyable.
pobra17 2 years ago
sorry Nkerklaan, that was not directed at you. I didn't see your comment. Shit.
pobra17 2 years ago
It's okay. I actually do beat myself with a hammer regularly, it's the only way I can enjoy daytime television.

Really interesting insights into something that we may be taking for granted: the ability to interpret comic books correctly. I have to agree that it seems some artists and writers are trying to get too clever and its hard to figure out the order on spreads.
PS, glad you are enjoying Gantz. I think Gantz and Battle Royale illustrate just how far Japanese comic books are beyond American ones.
mastulogan 2 years ago

Nkerklaan 2 years ago

Yeah well you fags need to lighten up a little. Bring on the big tits and hourglass bodies.
Nkerklaan 2 years ago
But if we have the gay then we wouldn't like the big boobs and the hourglass bodies so then we wouldn't want to bring it on. Instead we will be reviewing the video game Cho Aniki. Hope you boyz like that instead.
J.
comicculturewarrior 2 years ago
I just looked up Cho Aniki and as it appears to bring on neither the big boobs nor the hourglass bodies I have to conclude that it sucks.
Nkerklaan 2 years ago
But in the best possible way. Know what I mean? Nudge, nudge, wink, wink.
J.

Just knowing what Cho Aniki is makes you gay, ya gaylord. You're so gay, go make a bread bowl with spinach dip already.
Elliott
comicculturewarrior 2 years ago
If just knowing what Cho Aniki is makes you gay, does that mean I'm gay now that I've looked it up?

no way man, it's all about tracings of big tits and hourglass bodies.
pobra17 2 years ago
But why waste time tracing said big tits and hourglass bodies when you can just scan in the picture and retouch it with Photoshop? That's how a real artist like Greg Horn creates dammit!

Mike McKone' (of Teen Titans & Amazing Spider-Man) pisses me off.
All the people he draws have the complections of mannequins and have expressions like fucking Sex Dolls!
johnnyhorror92182 2 years ago
I agree. His art is just plain boring. They need to get him off Amazing Spider-Man.
J.
comicculturewarrior 2 years ago
Waid's story's are not impressing me either. You say BFTC is predictible, I coulda told you how his 24/7 story was gonna end!
Spider-Man is just "DERP" now! It's really just going nowhere. Under JMS, it was going places and felt mature. Now, its just recycled premises and really bad jokes.
johnnyhorror92182 2 years ago
Well, I think you would have to admit that's all BFTC was at the end of the day.

Ouch.
Pinkhamsterino 2 years ago
Sorry from missing the second "t" from "Elliott" there!
Pinkhamsterino 2 years ago
Holy shit! I just noticed that . And here I've been using only one "t" all this time. Elliot( I did it again!) must have been crying himself to sleep every time I've done that. Hahahahah...just thinking about that is funny.
J.
comicculturewarrior 2 years ago
"Ouch" is exactly what he will be saying many times a day while in prison. That and "Dear lord, my anus won't stop bleeding!"
Oh...was that too much?
J.
comicculturewarrior 2 years ago
Yer probably right, once they find out what he's in for. "Oh... was that too much?" is what his first jail boyfriend will ask sarcastically.

I heart sarcasm.

hey great vid as usual guys. i have a question for you two. i read a post someone wrote saying that they think batman doesnt belong in the DC U but more with vertigo. what do you say to that?
generaldark 2 years ago
He doesn't belong in either the DCU or the Vertigo-verse, but in the Marvel U.
Elliott
comicculturewarrior 2 years ago
he belongs in the Baleverse, where everyone talks with a gruff voice
Pinkhamsterino 2 years ago 3
You're kidding right Elliot? Everyone knows that Bats belongs in the Ultraverse. Yeesh.
On a serious note though I wouldn't mind seeing a Bats book put out in the current Vertigo fashion. There are definitely older Batman stories that sure did feel like something Vertigo would put out.
J.
comicculturewarrior 2 years ago
But what would a Batman book in "the current Vertigo fashion" be? Even MORE dark and gritty than usual? More swearing and violence? I dunno... I think part of what makes Batman work is the way the stories have to toe the line between grim and gritty street level crime/detective stories and action-packed spandex superhero stories. Making Batman a Vertigo book just seems like an excuse to go all Garth Ennis Punisher with it.
Nkerklaan 2 years ago
It would be Batman living on an Indian rez. But that would way be too dark and gritty for you. :)
J.
comicculturewarrior 2 years ago
Maybe it can be Batman living in a hidden community of fairy tale characters in the middle of a big city. Then I can read one trade and give up because it takes four volumes to get going.
Nkerklaan 2 years ago
But once it gets going it's soooo good.
J.
comicculturewarrior 2 years ago
Wait, are you talking about Cho Aniki again?
Nkerklaan 2 years ago
No but I think I should. Or we can talk about Ai Cho Aniki, which was the sequel. Or how about the 3rd game: Cho Aniki Bakuretsu Ranto Hen?
J.
comicculturewarrior 2 years ago
Which reminds me, have you heard of Billy Harrington? He's this gay porn star that Japanese internet geeks are obsessed with for some reason and they make hundreds of weird mashup music videos with the same one or two porn movies featuring him... they celebrate his birthday and call it the "Aniki Sex Festival". He's apparently gotten so popular there he actually came to Japan for this year's Aniki Sex Festival to do a personal appearance at some event or something they set up.
Just FYI.
Nkerklaan 2 years ago
Hmmmmm...I think that is way to much information. Yes, way too much.
J.
comicculturewarrior 2 years ago
Have I heard of Billy Harrington? LOL. That bitch owes me forty bucks and a handjob.
Pinkhamsterino 2 years ago
Sounds like the premise for an awesome sitcom.
J.
comicculturewarrior 2 years ago
or they could do a story where Batman is the last living man on Earth and instead of Robin as a sidekick, he could have a pet monkey. Now that's comic book gold.
pobra17 2 years ago
Well, since Batman is now living in a cave after Final Crisis your awesome story idea may become a reality.
J.
comicculturewarrior 2 years ago
they could call it B: The last caveman
pobra17 2 years ago
Yikes, from what I gather that would be rough. Or maybe Batman working for the banks evicting people from their foreclosed houses.
Pinkhamsterino 2 years ago
I would like to see Vertigo put out a Batman salary man comic. I think I could die happy after reading that.
J.
comicculturewarrior 2 years ago
So, what, Batman works in an office and fights white collar crime?
Nkerklaan 2 years ago
Exactly! Man that would be the fucking shit!
And after he's done fighting white collar crime he has to go home to his wife who no longer finds him atractive and has been sleeping with his young assistant, Dick Grayson. Think of the possibilities man!
J.
comicculturewarrior 2 years ago
I would totally pay $3.99 for that!

People like comic-craft are good at what they do but sometimes I think they get too obsessed by the technology rather than the reading experience.
My favourite letterers are still people like the late Tom Frame in the uk, Tom Orzechowski, ken bruzenak, todd klein and the best in my opinion of them all is John Workman who works with Walt Simonson so much.
locusmortis 2 years ago
You read any of John Workman's comics (he writes and draws too)?
Some cartoonists with nice lettering styles that probably wouldn't look right over other people's art: Dave Sim, Charles Schulz, Daniel Clowes, Robert Crumb.
Pinkhamsterino 2 years ago
never read any of workmans own stuff, I'd like to get some back issues of star*reach sometime for sure.
Dave Sim is pretty under-rated when it comes to art, page design, cover design and lettering, I think his controversial comments a few years ago made him persona non grata in some peoples eyes.
