This guy is a joke! Sounds like a racist and biggot...oh BTW let the kids have fun as long as you are white and have the right genetics. The people who hired this guy should be very concerned.
He makes jokes at the expense of kids in orphanages and short kids...don't play hockey...and BTW just have fun.
BG1034 raises a good point below. My son has been doing a program that has in a way failed him because the coach didn't recognize what works for him. I ultimately had to work with him on certain skills and teaching him about the sport in the way that HE would understand.
It was great for me because I got to spend quality time with him, but it illustrates how sometimes the best intentions can sometimes fall short.
By the speaker does raise valid points that should be kept in mind as well.
HOGWASH!!! I have coached for years and learned that no one philosophy works for ALL kids. The key is to find a way to reach each kid at his or her level. Some kids really only want 2 win...others couldn't care less. Don't force all of them 2 adopt the way you think is right. Youth skill development = GREAT IDEA. Otherwise lay off the parents. I have had parents criticize me because I DON'T yell enough. Stop letting Oprah and Rosie run the world. Do what works for each kid...as an individual
yes let the kids have fun.dosent matter wich sport. tod bad that many parents and coach dosent alaod it.and puching the kids away from the sport buy taking the fun from them
After a decade now coaching AAA and now Major Junior A, Don, I STILL WATCH THIS VIDEO THREE TIMES A YEAR, every word was nothing less than PERFECTION!
Great video! Having coached a Mite team, I can tell you that most kids didn't care as much about winning or losing, but they DID care if they got ice time and what position they got to play. The kids that cared WAY too much about winning? Well, that always came directly from their parents who are exactly as Don described. For the kids to be great, they have to love the game and not love "just winning". Otherwise, they are playing for the wrong reasons.
what a dumb fuck--first thing he does is take a shot at the parents-then goes into a story about confronting a coach like he is the parent. I wonder if the coach he scolded just thought to himself, another parent who thinks he knows it all.
Very inspiring message! It couldn't have come at a better time! (thanks to one of our mini mites coaches-thank you MS). As a very competitive Mites Youth Hockey Parent, I can honestly say, IT IS HARD to sometimes sit back and not say anything and let the sport be "about the kids"! Our Mites team has played so hard this season with unfortunately, no wins and only one tournament left. Even though a win would feel great, my son enjoying the game & his love for hockey IS what really matters!
I agree with most of what he had to say except for the winning and loosing parts..Those always play some role and ultimately winning is one of the major drives of the whole competition process. Granted I dont think it needs to be driven into a kids mind so strongly at a young age but it does still play a part and everyone who has won knows its a good feeling and not such a great feeling to loose. Its a very fine line to tread for sure.
As a professional soccer player for 17 years and now very much involved in coaching youth soccer in the state of MD, I can say that this message can be said and used in our soccer communities for parents, players and coaches. GREAT SPEECH! Thanks for your message.
His perspective on youth sports is excellent! There is much to be said about letting kids play sports on their own. They learn to set rules, handle conflict, and compromise among themselves.
GREAT HOCKEY VIDEO!! To see 2 other great hockey videos, just click on my name. The new one is for my upcoming hockey book which will be released in October and has the Foreword written by Keith Primeau!
Although I agree in principle that the kids should have fun, part of the experience relates to self worth. Coach Lucia's comment that it doesn't matter whether the kids win or lose fails to realize that winning part of the time makes the kids feel better. The kids are not likely to continue with a given sport if they are losing all of the time. Of course, part of whether they win or lose depends on the coach & part on the team.
Most of the kids I coach forget whether they've won or lost five minutes after the game ends. The kids that worry about losing do so because their parents complain about it all the way home from the rink.
It's kids sports. It isn't life and death. Relax, it's just a game!
Lucia is one of the best coaches in college hockey history. PERIOD! If anyone wants to argue that they can go study the win percentage. 200+ wins and less than 100 losses? Cmon! .658% winning.
Loved his message. I would like for it to come into being.

The themes in this speach apply to ALL youth sports not just hockey. If we could only get the football coaches to read it
