Someone tries pot, thinking there are no really noticable adverse effects and such, but the moral line in the sand is being pushed back all the same. At some later point, when they are asked to try something else (E, Coke, or whatever), they think back to "well, that last drug wasn't so bad. I'll give it a shot."

It's the fact that we associate Cannabis with chemical drugs that makes this a real scenario. A chemical is a chemical. Just because it turns up in nature doesn't make it safe. Lots of venomous animals, and toxic plants/mushrooms make this clear. You don't smoke nightshade or deathcaps, or play with cobras. THC has negative reprecussions on the body, too, though not as pronounced or as "visible" as cocaine (hunger, mild hallucinogenic properties, etc., vs absolutely crashing from a lack of Serotonin). For _some_ folks, pot IS the gateway drug to harder stuff, plain and simple.
