  • Along with Coltrane's I must say Bobby Mcferrin's pretty brilliant as well.

  • improv 1:

    watch?v=Ft5GvxyCSvY

  • does anyone know if there is a transcription of this performance?

  • 5:18 i jizzes in my pants

  • f*cking brilliant

  • Mesmerising. After all the times this tune has been played by so many people he still manages to find something completely new and fresh, yet still faithful to the original tune - and the way he weaves the melody through the harmony. Genius at work!

  • 3:45 I feel that the music playing comes right from his mind, as I watch him.

  • up there with Coltrane's version

  • This is absolutely extraordinary. I have heard hundreds versions of this song, but this is unique. It’s magic. Brad was able to pick out something new from this over-heard song just playing (part of) the theme. No fripperies, pure emotion. So deep in the sentiment, so perfect in the formal equilibrium.

  • such a nice interpretation brad; See your solo in 16 days :)

  • this was recorded in 2011

  • The man amazes me. I am so glad I had the opportunity to see him play. Thanks for posting this

  • the transcription is available at jazznote.co.uk

  • It's good; however, the solo My Favorite Things crown still belongs to McCoy Tyner.

  • honestly i don't like watching the video. the music seems like it is better than anything a man can create so I like thinking of it as raining down straight from heaven. i'm going to go watch the other version without video..:)

  • When they make a movie of his life, Brad Mehldau should definitely be played be Ray Liotta.

  • A rain of tears... A tear in the rain... Absolutely favorite...

  • he said in an interview "One fun surprise of this concert was 'My Favorite Things.' It was not something I had played before - the Coltrane version is sacred to me. But I was going out for an encore and thought of it at the last moment"

  • Lol 1:47 - is that Strongbow?

  • Was he just improvising the melody? I've got the same song arragnged by Rogers and Hammerstein but it's only for accompaniment for a band Good job btw

  • This is my favorite thing.

  • Brad Mehldau just might be, in my humble opinion, the greatest jazz piano player ever

  • @zrouth I would doubt it, if you are talking about both Classical and Jazz pianists. But if he would play Both Jazz and classical, I wouldn't doubt it at all, 'cause he has an exceptional sound for classical pianist.

  • My beautiful favourite things

  • love the bottom keys

  • flawless!

  • The best "my favourite things" version ever!!

  • @TheStormFinder

:/ it's the only piece I wouldn't say that out of religious affection

  • @TheStormFinder Really hard to say that in the rather tall shadow of John Coltrane's legendary version, which this one doesn't quite top.

  • @crowdmaker As soon as I read his comment, Coltrane's version came immediately to mind.

  • @TheStormFinder Ahahah! No way man!

  • Tears in my eyes...

  • @jitteh me too -- watching the withdrawn facial expressions gives a sense that all the feelings are channeled straight from the heart and out through the hands

  • Oh yeah. Thank you so much for sharing this.
