I agree that we shouldn't be shoving them into new shells like that or littering the beaches so that they resort to using bottle caps as homes because they've out grown their old shell and can't find another the right size. However, it's not bad as you make it out to be, there are people who honestly care about these creatures as pets, and do look after them. As long as they have food and a home, they're content.

Very poor husbandry. Terriestrial hermit crabs have very specific care requirements and a complex set of behaviours that must be considered when keeping them for any reasonable length of time. It does not include yanking them out of their shells and forcing them into new ones. The Transfer from one shell to another should be entirely at the discretion of the animal. and it should be recognized that any going without a shell for extented peroids are stressed.
If a hermit crab takes a piece of shit as it's shell, that means that it was it's favorite choice, they don't just fucking leave there shells and pick something shittier than it.

They really are amazing animals, I got mine when I was...Seven? He was about the size of my hand, so as he got bigger it was really hard to find shells, but he was such a character! Just like a kitten with a shell. I agree that awareness for them is kind of illogical seeing as they aren't going extinct or anything serious, but they are pets to be respected.

well, they aren't exactly "beautiful" animals... And their helping out with cleaning our planet by recylcling botles into shells so, i wouldn't complain too much... tht's just the way i see it. I had a pet hermit crab, and it died last year in February.. Sure I was sad when it died but I got 2 dogs, the animals down in the woods behind my house, and the bird that i had since its mom left her.
