I've seen Marcus in performance several times, and each time I'm impressed with the musicality of those kids, and the passion that they obviously have for performance. Even so, I am bored to death with their shows. For a band that large they should be producing more sound. And their show themes are a bit...soft. Yes, those kids are obviously talented, but to me the essence of what marching band is about has been sapped from their shows. Oboes, bassoons? A little disheartening (and I play oboe).

The real difference between Marcus and Bell is Bell has fun because they win, Marcus wins because they have fun. I have many friends in both bands and there is a major difference in attitude. Both are great bands but a real winning season is when you enjoy what you do.

Marcus is a pretty good band. having said that, the expensive props are irrelevant and distracting and the musical emphasis isn't where it needs to be. Sorry, but I'm pretty sure the only reason you guys won this year at state was because some loser judge (who had applied for an assistant band director's job at L D Bell the previous year) ranked L D Bell 10th in music. Strongly disagree. Bell would've won by a few points had the judge who gave them tenth (his name is Mr. Nail and he is an asshole by the way!) gave them anything below a 7th place vote. It doesn't really matter, The UIL judges prefer marcus' more classical musical selections as opposed to Bell's more contemporary selections... that's the biggest difference I see, and it's the tendency of most UIL judges that I've experienced. You can call it biased if you want to, I call it taste... However, I do STRONGLY "prefer" Bell over Marcus.

Here is my problem with Marcus:

Don't get me wrong, they are fantastic at what they do. Completely.

My problems are these:

No Umph: They play and march well, but their shows are so bright all the time, it's hard to have any driving force behind the performance. It sort of stays in the same level the whole time.

Improvement: Marcus comes out at the top of the season and do great. However, nothing changes between then and the end of the season. It stays the same the whole season.

DCI guard can dance better than 98% of the highschools in the country (DEPENDING on the routine, it's the routine thats made for them NOT the individuals). And bigger bands often time are a bit too excessive. Bigger is NOT always better. Every band does not need to be 300+ and up, they can produce just as much sound so leave DCI alone.

Honestly, I'm not too into the visual effects of this show. I found the props a little bit excessive, and clashing with the good selection of music chosen. Yet, Marcus is deserving of the State Champion Title, and is rightfully placed among the top high school marching bands. Marcus simply sounds the best. The marching band is basically a moving concert band, which should be the goal for any high school marching band. The marching was executed very nicely, as well.

Part of judging a contest is GE.. because GE is what forms the opinion in the judges mind. More emotionally driven shows with great musicality and that extra momentum are going to overpower even the most technically-correct shows.
