After 6 miles god intervened... Such bullshit doesnt belong in court. These claims make no sense. Ive tried this myself. I love how people say this is the largest recall in automotive history. To date, Toyota has recalled around 10-11 million vehicles worldwide. Ford recalled around 14 million in the year 1999 ALONE.
A few mags and TV shows have tested this issue. The pinned the throttle to the floor on a track. Then at the same time pushed the brakes. Guess what, car stopped. Yes you have to push harder than normal, but they will stop on there own. The brakes on all but the shittiest of cars have enough peower to stop a gar even with the engine accelorating.

why the FUCK would you blame such a thing on Koreans? You nasty japanese twit. The company's blunders started this nosedive. You fucked up Japs blame others, especially Koreans, for everything. Fuck you. Take some responsibility. Teach your kids real history, instead of lying and falsifying your deeds. Otherwise, you'll piss off another country and suffer another nuclear attack. Piece of shit Jap.
hey people watch out cus if you really wanna get Toyota down the chinese will take over then we all eat shit ok. at least i can trust Japanese people cuz they are responsible but not chinese
I agree, this is propaganda and hypocrisy. Just when Toyota takes the #1 spot for sales over US car makers, we get this. I'll continue to drive my Lexus and buy Toyota products in the future. I've owned a 4runner, camry and now a RX and never had a problem w/ any of them. This is nothing but a witch hunt boosting sales for US failing car makers cuz there's a lot of people that believe the media.
you dumbass "conspiracy theorists" have your tin foil caps on a little too tight. dont get you stupid americans who will defend to the death a japanese company thats takes advantage of our generous trade regulations. not to mention they are killing innocents and lying about it.
Really, conspiracy theory? You need to read what I wrote you dope. GM already admits it wont pay back well right now close to 10B of the bailout and as for trade regulations, why have so many car man. moved to the US? Your just another ignorant redneck who will believe whatever the media shows him, I'm sure you think nascar is a sport too...cars in circles woooohoooo...
Seriously? You know Toyota is more American GM...I wouldn't expect you to realize this because you have already proven yourself to be shall we say a little slow i.e. "trade regulations". Tell me this how again do trade regulations affect cars made in the U.S.? The burden of proof always lies on the affirmative, give me one case where the evidence points to a Toyota defect? I tried and I know I have much better resources then you. BTW I drive a 2009 BMW 5 series. Good luck!
"You know Toyota is more American GM..."are you really that stupid?"Tell me this how again do trade regulations affect cars made in the U.S.?"-be glad to tell you if id made that statement-fortunately i did not. watch?v=49gj9OcJ-p0 the avalon owner brought his kamikazi-mobile in to the dealership with the engine bouncing off the rev-limiter. the service manager confirmed the car was at wide open throttle. he also confirmed the floor mat wasnt in the way and that the pedal moved freely-enjoy.
Not to discount the problems at all but this is NOTHING compared to the dozens of deaths caused by the Ford Focus (11 life threatening recalls) its first year. How come congress didn't get involved in what was by far a more serious issue? Most likely, issues the cause MANY deaths are OKAY for domestics but issues that cause a FEW deaths are INTOLERABLE for imports.
"I'm not a fan of hypocrisy"-youd have to understand the word before becoming a fan of it. toyota has 2600+cases of UA and 56 deaths-the numbers get bigger every day. how many deaths are attributed to the focus?"How come congress didn't get involved in what was by far a more serious issue? Most likely, issues the cause MANY deaths are OKAY for domestics but issues that cause a FEW deaths are INTOLERABLE for imports."like when the government held the same congressional hearings over the explorer?
I do agree that it is bizarre, but at the same time the US govt grilled the hell out of GM and Chrysler execs when they asked for the bailout... Different scenerio, but same assanine system
AP should be looking into the false complaints that Kane submitted in his report such as FOI requests from politicians, letters from lawyers etc - see the video "False NHTSA complaints found in Kane's Report" on carquestions
The Lexus sedan driven by Rhonda Smith, who testified in Congress Tuesday about a harrowing incident of sudden acceleration, is still on the road, according to the National Highway traffic Safety Administration.
In fact, the new owners of the luxury ES350 sedan have reported 27,000 miles trouble-free with the vehicle, according to a NHTSA spokeswoman. Mrs. Smith and her husband sold the vehicle after the incident, in which she thought she might die.
Carquestions takes an inside look at the testimony of David Gilbert and Sean Kane as they try and sell a wild theory to Congress. The associate professor Gilbert puts his hand to a remake of some of automotive history's most discredited theories of unintended acceleration while Mr. Kane produces the cooked up paperwork in order to support it. Carquestions attempts to explain "Gilbert's Theorem" but in the end finds a simple explanation is more than sufficient. I
people are dumb - what happened to just turning the key to shut off the engine? or shifting into neutral?
in a series 1 land rover discovery, I'm able to shut off the engine while moving at 70 mph, and start it right back up again. probably not good for it, but just sayin'...
In all fairness - in heat of the moment people panic, first thing that comes to mind is keeping the car under control and not to hit anyone else. With the widespread of the accelerator issue, the shift to neutral is now a better known safety precaution. As for the engine agreed turning your car off would be an ideal remedy too, I cant say for certain which cars do and don't turn off when in motion, at least moving 10-15 mph Subaru Legacy 97 will.
- but honestly (and I hope you agree) -- there are too many people here in the 21st Century who climb into their vehicles and expect to operate them without the slightest notion of how or why they work. call it a lack of curiosity.
you obviously got into your car and tried shutting off the engine at 10-15 mph -- and noticed that you could do it. it's a long shot, but this random bit of information may save your life in the future. kudos : )
Hilarious that this lying witch sold this car to another family, and they drove it trouble free for 27,000 miles, before Toyota bought it to examine it SHAME ON YOU RHONDA SMITH, Proverbs 19:9, "A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish."

And good luck to all other cars--their drivers and their passengers--which are on the road at the same time as that Lexus when its brakes fail again and when it suddenly accelerates.
Let us all rejoice that there are many chambers and very few bullets in the pistol we are using for this RUSSIAN ROULETTE. Just as well, because Toyota insists that they have found nothing wrong at all.
pretty sure toyota has accepted the responsibility for these problems, but more pressing is that the U.S. gov is using Japan as a scapegoat to boost US car sales. more than half of congress are supported by special interests groups affiliated with US car companies. so yeah, it looks like they are after money. btw, u forgot to mention the 4.5 million cars ford recalled this year for problems with faulty cruise control switches, and 14.3 million recalled for the same issue over the last 10 yrs.
3 the fact that Toyota this time is recalling hundreds of thousands of units of the same models in Europe;
4 the fact that Daihatsu--a Toyota subsidiary--this month announced a plan to recall 60,774 units of 4 models sold between 1988 and 2000, for faulty wiring which could cause airbags to suddenly explode;
5 the fact that Suzuki this month recalled 432,366 units of 2 models of vans, manufactured from 2005 to 2009, and sold in Japan, for a design flaw in the airconditioning which causes them to burst into flames;
6 the fact that Nissan this month recalled 76,415 units of 10 models, produced between 2007 and 2008, for defective wiring in the engine which cause them to suddenly stop while running even at high speeds on the road;
7 the fact that this is Nissan's 3rd recall just this month;
8 the fact that Honda is at present conducting a recall of hundreds of thousands of units sold around the world for faulty airbags--many suddenly explode, some sending shards of metal;
9 the fact that even among Nissan, Honda and Toyota, Toyota has been recalling an overwhelming number of recalls during the past ten years;
(for #9 above, see the video clip posted in 2006: watch?v=HFcJo1WNDkw
(It is in Japanese, but you can read the graphs shown.)
10 the fact that apart from this present one, Toyota conducted a recall of 4million units in 2007;
11 the fact that recalls are actually very common among car manufacturers--Japanese, American, European, even Korean--but very few defects are SERIOUS or even FATAL;
12 the fact that Akio Toyoda himself says that nobody told him of the existence of these problems until "the end of 2009";
13 the fact that Akio Toyoda has been on the board of the company since 2000 and has been Executive Vice President since 2005;
14 the fact that despite the deaths and the crashes and the recalls, they have found nothing wrong with the technology and nothing wrong with the design and nothing wrong with the actual manufacturing;
15 the fact that Toyota initially blamed the drivers (and have not withdrawn the excuse) ... initially blamed the US parts manufacturer (until it turned out that the same part is manufactured in Japan and in China, and the same problems exist) ... initially blamed the American executives for failing to conduct recalls promptly (until it turned out that the President for Toyota North America is a Japanese, Yoshimi Inaba, and until it turned out that only the JPN Head Office can authorize it);
16 the fact that Toyota's "Executive Vice President for Quality Standards" is holding a post which did not exist until these problems were publicized recently;
17 the fact that the Department at the Head Office which is supposed to receive, from different countries' markets, reports of product problems, only RECEIVED them--the information was not relayed to other departments which could correct it and was not relayed to other markets/other subsidiaries;
none of what you have said changes the fact that they are a scapegoat. ford, gm, chrysler, bmw, etc. have all had issues similar to this, but it's the first time i have seen a congressional hearing like the one i've watched. and yes japan is recalling cars in other countries, but i don't see countries in europe holding congressional hearings about it. do u really believe it is coincidence that these hearings are taking place as US car companies are about to tank?
Let me understand that lady's testimony. She put both feet on the brake, pulled emergency brake, shifted car to neutral, and car wouldn't stop? And then she prayed to God and car stopped. And later on her husband found nothing.....
Yep. Everything strange that happens in this world is by american logic "a miracle" or "an act of God". Luckily enough for this fine lady she remembered to call for God to help her, which he apparently did. God bless America!
2C: This month, too: Daihatsu Motor Co--a Toyota Motor Co subsidiary--announced that it PLANS TO recall 60,000+ units for 4 models, produced between 1998 and 2000.
Faulty wiring that could cause the airbags to suddenly explode.
Sold in Japan--were the Japanese drivers and passengers "looking for money", too?
She is one of the worst actress in the world. It takes time to speed up. How come she did not call 911 at that time? How much she want Toyota pay her? Did she have any witness?
as much as I hate Toyota for their mistake or so called "cover-up", I hate American Government and the media for their conspiracy against Japanese automaker or whoever stands in their way whether it be a company or a country(u know what I'm talking about). Let the consumers make their own decisions in the free market. U.S. Government is a f-ing bully. U.S. will get paybacks from all the other countries when EU and China overtake and split the "super power"
this is history repeating itself, if you know what happened to Tucker company, well this is the opportunity again for the big three or two or the american goverment to try to take down another quality company.
I do not believe her story one bit! Engine was racing while she was stopped! Hahahaha yeah her engine was racing while she was pumping the gas pedal thinking it was the brake. Someone send this lady to jail for trying to defraud Toyota.
She is not saying the truth, her husband as well!!!! it is not possible that she went through all this and was able to do a phone call, may be the phone call is what caused her to go through all this
Mr Gilbert said under oath he had never been able to find a real world example of a car by any manufacturer that had the problem he induced into the Toyota. Of the 1.3 billion cars that have been produced since they were invented, no one has been able to document a car that accelerates by itself and the brakes fail. David Gilbert is to Toyota what William Rosenbluth was to Audi - Its happening again SUA drivers blaming the cars - Google Kristi Bradosky - you'll see what I mean.
I am not protecting Toyota. But I have a simple question. Can anybody make a phone call while driving at a 100mph in a state of sheer panic in the U.S?
American wants its #1 car manufacturer gone solely for the benefit of Government Motors, and sure it is working pretty well as they planned. Good job, America!!
The pedal is electronic if you've heard. The whole car is becoming electronic these days. In a mechanical system, the force you apply on the pedal translated to a movement, in a electronic pedal, the force you apply could be incorrectly interpreted or ignored at all. This is the problem Toyota has. Frankly I would never drive one.
thank god i driving a 97 avalon with 55K mileage, it mechanical, i guess XD I hate the electrical stuffs, they fail u and people keep all of those in the cars.
She went thru all of those steps and had the opportunity to see all of those events happening on her instruments and made a phone call to her drunken husband all while accelarating out of control at over 100 mph? Please.
"After six miles... God intervened and the car slowly came to a stop and I pulled to the left median... And then I woke up in my bed and thought to myself... hmmmmm If I testified in court about the dream I just had, I could make a fortune... And waste a ton of taxpayer money in a bullshit trial and come out looking like a complete and total asshole." Gotta love the idiots.
Some of these people commenting are real monsters.
1) Some cars wont let you shift into Neutral OR turn the engine off while the car is in drive
2) If your engine started to speed up uncontrollably, you WILL panic. It's not as easy as you think to just say "Oh, I'll just shift into neutral even though I'm going 110 MPH now (Which is easy to reach in a lexus)"
Cars that wont let you shift into neutral while in drive??? Come on now... Never have I heard such bullox! What would be the purpose of the neutral gear? Thats like saying that you can't shift from drive into park... and if you couldn't, you'd have to go from neutral... but how could we go to neutral if we were in drive? Sounds like you're full of it. We're not monsters, we're realists. The American public is awaiting a handout. Plain and simple.
true. I use manual car but always neutral engine first and then shift the gear into 2nd or 3rd etc. should be same in automatic gearbox.
and the second point is that. most of the cars in the market require ages to accelerate. more than 5 seconds (even if you press down to the floor !!! ) that's a lot time to think.
and here we have driving test to protect our lives ..
The U.S became frightened and corrupted the market, enforced existing rules hereto fore ignored all to give the Nationalized American Automakers an unfair advantage. It is all corruption and all political bullshit
you know....God is a big fan of driving. That's why he takes time out of his busy day to intervene! Geez what douchetards!
Anyway....why the fuck are we building cars without a solid link between the gas pedal and the fuel injection system? Just asking for trouble. Theoretically, the system could be hacked by a disgruntled employee!!! Do we want that?
@spokegetaboutit Whether you know it or not, God is a big fan of people all the time. His busy day is about intervening in the lives of His people....
Ok, let's get real - there is NO WAY she had the emergency brake on. Physically impossible - the car would spin out. These idiots are looking for a handout.
Here is an amazing story. I am not talking about the fools, whom at adult age have not learned to operate an automobile. I am addressing the fact that up until 3 years ago GM was the number one in total vehicle sales worldwide. Then Toyota overtook them. How did the number one in sales go to Bankruptcy and Nationalization in two short years? Also, you nationalists, there are more complete Toyota's built in America than there are G.M's.
Obviously the average consumer doesn't agree with you otherwise they still would be buying American wouldn't they. In a globalised world, just buy the best product regardless of where it is from.
I'd rather buy a Toyota vehicle on their worst day, than a GM vehicle on their best day. Even on their worst day Toyota still makes superior vehicles.
This is why we should buy cars made by Americans. Americans care about each other and will make sure these vehicles are safe and will protect the drive. Toyota does not give two shits about America, as long as they get money from us thats good to them. Their cars are cheap but is the life of an America worth it. Stimulate the economy, help your fellow men and women, buy AMERICAN MADE PRODUCTS!!
@tromboneist07 Man are you full of it. How much sense does it take to control a car.? Is the the common American so ill equipped with mechanical understanding that they cannot master an automobile? If the gas pedal sticks, gets held down, broken whatever...you will just sieze up and let it kill you? You deserve to die, natural selection. good riddance.
It's obvious that the Japs are pissed about WWII and Nagasaki - and this is their half-assed 'revenge' on the whites. Utterly disgusting I hope we go to war with them soon.
Did your mother have any children that survived? Who reminds you to breathe? Who wipes your chin? Tell me the truth, did you vote for Odrama? Do you have a picture of Pelosi and Reid in your basement?
u sound like an idiot...ford had one of the biggest recalls ever...much bigger than toyota...the us economy is bad right now and the american government is doin wtvr they can to try to boost up their domestic growth
some cars now lock the gear selector so it can't accidentally be popped into neutral while driving, also some cars lock the ignition so you can't shut it off in gear...
@twisted45 Too damn STUPID. Automobile are, I would have said idiot proof until I saw this woman talking, complex machines made extremely simple through technology and requirements. Nothing is Harmless. Possibly there is a natural law at work to eliminate some of the totally helpless from the planet. We can only hope

I've owned a 4runner, camry and now a RX and never had a problem w/ any of them. This is nothing but a witch hunt boosting sales for US failing car makers cuz there's a lot of people that believe the media.

Tell me this how again do trade regulations affect cars made in the U.S.? The burden of proof always lies on the affirmative, give me one case where the evidence points to a Toyota defect? I tried and I know I have much better resources then you. BTW I drive a 2009 BMW 5 series. Good luck!

I'm not a fan of hypocrisy.

"I'm not a fan of hypocrisy"-youd have to understand the word before becoming a fan of it. toyota has 2600+cases of UA and 56 deaths-the numbers get bigger every day. how many deaths are attributed to the focus?"How come congress didn't get involved in what was by far a more serious issue? people are dumb - what happened to just turning the key to shut off the engine? or shifting into neutral?
in a series 1 land rover discovery, I'm able to shut off the engine while moving at 70 mph, and start it right back up again. probably not good for it, but just sayin'...
jnstraume 2 years ago
In all fairness - in heat of the moment people panic, first thing that comes to mind is keeping the car under control and not to hit anyone else. With the widespread of the accelerator issue, the shift to neutral is now a better known safety precaution. As for the engine agreed turning your car off would be an ideal remedy too, I cant say for certain which cars do and don't turn off when in motion, at least moving 10-15 mph Subaru Legacy 97 will.
rustom909 2 years ago
agreed entirely about being in a state of panic
- but honestly (and I hope you agree) -- there are too many people here in the 21st Century who climb into their vehicles and expect to operate them without the slightest notion of how or why they work. call it a lack of curiosity.
you obviously got into your car and tried shutting off the engine at 10-15 mph -- and noticed that you could do it. it's a long shot, but this random bit of information may save your life in the future. kudos : )

Anyone that can't stop a car with stuck throttle is incompetent or lying.
I'm suspicious the floormat recall led to runaway rumors and GM is taking advantage.
Toyota's official advice is to shift into neutral so that's obviously not locked out. But if you're not a wuss then shut it off and steer manually.
Parts break on any car. Tires, brakes, etc. fail more often than this nonsense.
Requiring cars to be perfect will cost a fortune and is impossible. People just need to know how to drive.
capitalist888 2 years ago 4
The pedal is electronic if you've heard. The whole car is becoming electronic these days. In a mechanical system, the force you apply on the pedal translated to a movement, in a electronic pedal, the force you apply could be incorrectly interpreted or ignored at all. This is the problem Toyota has. Frankly I would never drive one.

Fucking people these days, have a heart!!!
035577 2 years ago
Cars that wont let you shift into neutral while in drive??? Come on now... Never have I heard such bullox! What would be the purpose of the neutral gear? Thats like saying that you can't shift from drive into park... and if you couldn't, you'd have to go from neutral... but how could we go to neutral if we were in drive? Sounds like you're full of it. We're not monsters, we're realists. The American public is awaiting a handout. Plain and simple.
Declan455 2 years ago 5
@Declan455
true. I use manual car but always neutral engine first and then shift the gear into 2nd or 3rd etc. should be same in automatic gearbox.
and the second point is that. most of the cars in the market require ages to accelerate. more than 5 seconds (even if you press down to the floor !!! ) that's a lot time to think.
and here we have driving test to protect our lives ..

why didn't she kick it into neutral?

some cars now lock the gear selector so it can't accidentally be popped into neutral while driving, also some cars lock the ignition so you can't shut it off in gear...
