The law is verry lenient in my country. People shoplift because "why pay for it when you can steal it" Well, if the penalty for stealing was a lot harsher than it is, it would probably make more sence to just pay for it.

@thecanadianstoner1 Would it not just be easier to remove the object from it's packaging? What you describe would not create an electromagnet capable of "scrambling" a signal- it would simply burn your leg. Also, magnets don't have waves, they have field lines- but that's not even the method used to detect shoplifters.  You comment has like 5 fails.

I just seen on our news in kansas last night an employee of wal mart was fired because she tried stopping a shopplifter. Now aint that some shit!!! Thats a pretty good punishment to make them hold signs.
