  • Tommy makes that guitar sing. He could probably make a bunch of rubber bands stretched over a shoe box sound like a string orchestra.

  • Oh wow I actually love this because it shows the true intensity and emotions in his playing and you can hear that in his music. It's never boring and he gives all he has all the time!

  • my head wanna explode if i hear this, Despite the sound hole closing :)

  • 0:51... love it. I've seen Tommy live a few times, and he's a riot.

  • amazing as always

  • Ha tommy at 0:37 hes a strict with himself, youd have to be to be that good

  • Well, in 2005 he used to make several mistakes per a performance... NOW HE IS ABSOLUTELY PERFECT!

  • There were mistakes? Sounded flawless to me...

  • Shows that the Maestro is actually mortal and has an 'off day' when he gets tired from so much touring...

  • The brilliant Mr. E did make a few frustrating mistakes which he recovered from without losing the song's integrity. His mistakes would be an honor for me to make!!! Hey, all musicians have "one of those days" performance-wise, and a lot more often than Tommy Emmanuel does! If that's a train wreck to him, it's barely a pin-drop to us mortal guitarists.

  • Although you could hear him exclaim "...aaah, c'mon.." during the filming, acknowledging his less than perfect take, the minutely misfretted notes are just character adding occurences of live performing. Tommy Emmanuel is a musician Blessed by the Greatest Power of all, hence he's extraordinarily equipped to touch the heart and soul of the listener. God Bless him.

  • tommy is enjoying the hell out of performing this fantastic composition for his audience. (this next bit is sarcasm) i bet he was totally IRATE when he played that single unclean note @ 1:26.

  • @acr08807 the a note in the melody is not clean (this is making him angry because its the most important to play the melody clean)

@HideyoshiR its just my opinion but im sure that he isn't just improvising

  • sounds like some of you are envious idiots and are jealous of a MASTER, if you can't enjoy it, why listen?

  • hey i think Tommy actually enjoyed that as much as us, and so he frikin should,

Hey Joey , yep and what a great story

  • He is what so many of us aspire to be, what else to say than thanks!!!

  • this song sounds like the guitar is telling a story

  • i love his variation of the 1:28 - 1:32 part!

  • @HideyoshiR lol its not a variation its him getting angry because he made a mistake before at 1:26

  • @XJumpstylorX

hm sounds a little far fetched to me. Lets not call it a mistake, there was a tone at 1:26 that wasn't very clean, yeah. And he got angry, that's also correct, but that was before when he really messed up a bit. He still seemed to improvise that 1:28-1:32 part.

  • @XJumpstylorX What note should he have played that he didn't?

  • Search this "term" to see a vid. of Tommy playing the song flawlessly; (preceded by happy hour)

Tommy Emmanuel a Musicalbox - Verona

  • I don't think anyone is really complaining that he missed a note. It's more that it's so surprising to see it happen and even more surprising to see him get so obviously furstrated with himself.

This is actually one of his best songs imho...I also wish he would play this and one of his oldies, 'Daybreak' more often. Actually, I don't think I've seen him play Daybreak for many years. :-(

  • He looks pretty happy to me! (and why wouldn't he be?)

saw him last year at the base of Copper Mtn (CO) - for FREE!

He is the master. you go boy

  • Love this song. Don't know why he doesn't play regularly.

  • @u2brr1

This is one of the more difficult tunes to play live.

    out of everything he does.

    he is still the king.

  • 00:38 - - " Come on, come on...! " = ?

  • Its because he miss some notes.

  • @mikkkeyman *lowers voice* I think he actually missed a note ...

  • I should say it does look like TE is having a bit of an 'off' day here...

...and yet he's still better than anything else.

  • Is this the same worn out guitar that he has today?????

  • its anything but worn out

  • @trekbiker08 I'd say it's the same one he uses in the Sheldon Auditorium gig.

  • He makes a new one look like that in about 3 years. He usually plays over 300 shows a years and many shows he uses the brush which wears the top thin in a hurry. So I don't know the answer to your question but he may have gone through 2 or 3 guitars since this video.

  • a true musician

  • Great Song!!!

  • beautiful song!

  • poor aplause !?!?

  • One of my favorite songs from the Endless Road album. Nice to see the live performance even if he missed a note or two.

  • I love the song too!

I'm learning it at the moment, it's so fucking hard you won't believe it mate, haha!

  • yeah learning too. ive learnt nearly every one of his songs. this song and endless road have been the toughest for me.

  • the reason he's not happy is because he misses a note a 0:36 its pretty clear

  • @Wiig Jeez. Nitpicky.

  • I'm simply elaborating for the video author. I'm not even stating anything that could offend anyone, wtf is your problem?

  • how in hell can he do that ?!?!?!?!

  • haha i love the AHHHH CMON he give himself for missing a bit, well if you could call that a fault

  • there is a mic in he guitar

  • this guy got marked down, but he's right. there is a microphone inside the guitar in addition to the pickups

  • Soo much feeling and emotion in the first rifft

    what a god

  • THANK YOU so much for sharing this 2 and a half minutes I was far far away

    :]

  • its my lovest ...

  • Is that some sort of pickup on his guitar?

  • no that's an acoustic electric(the pickups are inside the guitar) that black thing in the whole is just to reduce the echoing inside, cause a lot of times when you plug an acoustic in an amp and barely play a note, the amp will fuck up bad and give off a reverberating sound that makes your head wanna explode

  • Well put.

  • @xxxslayerxxx666 this comment is three years old, and still kicks ass lol so true

  • @willymopanya123 lol....i just wish i spelled HOLE right....i don't see how i made such an idiotic mistake! you should listen to ANY candy rat guitarist....they only sign guitarists that are true virtuoso's...my 2 favorites are don ross and steffen schackinger!

  • @xxxslayerxxx666 Oh hell ya man! Personally, I am a huge Antoine Dufour and Tommy Gauthier fan. They are all brillant and give me so much inspiration. Don Ross is a piiimp tho, what a player.

  • @willymopanya123 yeah, he's good....i just don't care much for the tapping and slapping style (i know it's way harder than actually playing, i just prefer the natural tone of strumming and picking notes) but they have balls to play like that live cause it's VERY hard to get good tone(especially when it's fast, even the great like chet atkins mess up the tone) so he has amazing tone for that style... the worst (in tone) yet most famous slap styled guitarist is trace bundy.

  • Could someone please help me figure out the very last chord in the intro's chord progression?

  • Here's the figuring for the last chord in the introduction. 034200

  • It's a CM13:

    002430

  • sorry, 034200, indeed :)

  • Yeah, nvm, it is. I'm actually having a harder time figuring out the intro chords than the intro fingerpicking. Huh.

  • Guys, is this standard tuning?

  • Yes. The tab is in the excellent 'Endless Road' tab book, well worth getting if you tire of trying to work it out yourself

  • one of my favourite TE songs..

  • I wish he'd play this song more often - its beautiful and I think, one of his finest pieces. (If he does play this more than I think he does, youtube them please, please, please)

  • you're damn right! although it is a tricky piece.. i'd love to see him perform it :)

  • he looks tired

  • I am glad we have so many music critics here quick to point out that Tommy is a human being and makes mistakes like the rest of us. Thanks for pointing out his "flubs" - I never would have noticed without your perfectly tuned ears and guitar virtuosity.

I would give away everything I own to be able to play just this one song as well as he did - "flubbed notes" and all!

He who plays eternally perfect, cast the first stone. Otherwise, be quiet and enjoy a musical genius at work.

  • Thank you, for putting things into perspective. I myself listen for the passion and beauty in Tommy's music and playing. Everyone makes a clam from time to time, part of being human. I would never have noticed anything unless it was pointed out. Looking for flaws is not what music is about. Tommy is a true genius and one of the nicest down to earth people you could ever meet.

  • i agree this is the smartest thing any one has ever said on youtube.

  • I only mentioned it because he plays so damned perfectly all the time that it's occasionally 'nice' to see him as a human being. Makes us ALL feel a bit better about our playing.

  • @apcwzrd i wouldnt even call it flubbed id call it tweeked, it gets a unique sound and your definately right, so far i havent seen anyone with as alien of talent as tommy, i the people who dont like him or his music are the ones who cant apreciate legitimate talent and see past just the sounds you hear and notice whats put into it to make it what it is. the critics can eat shit

  • @apcwzrd Well said!!!!!!!!!

  • @apcwzrd Your comment was just perfect man.

  • @apcwzrd

i beg to differ, he is clearly not human

  • He definately flubbed a couple notes in there, which to most mortals is normal, but Tommy is so at one with the guitar that it rarely happens. I hate to see him get frustrated during a performance.

  • haha funny

  • in two words : good music!

  • This is my absolute favorite song to play myself. No matter how many times I play it I still love it as much as the first time I saw this video.

  • anyone tell me when he would be play in Ireland

    thx.

  • He's playing in Belfast on 27 November 2008! Keep an eye on Ticketmaster for tickets.

  • Just had to say thank you for that info!

  • beautiful

  • Wow...

I started watching this song and it just hit me, this is amazing. No need for flashy percussion or tapping, just straight, soul-hitting music. Incredible.

  • What a beautiful tune. There's a few minor mistakes, yet we can all forgive those!

  • brilliant.

  • nub camera man =_=

  • @kommanderlum:

what the **** are you guys talking about, just enjoy the master at work!!

  • i guess none of you can play guitar. sorry for your inability to connect with TE. seriously you guys don't understand what i'm saying why are you arguing? any of you have a clue about muscle memory and how playing very complex music like that is beyond your conscious thinking during playing? he has to get to the place where he needs to be to allow his subconcious to play. is this explanation enough for you or maybe some more insilts might help?

  • lol yeah you connect with tommy emmanuelle...haha...Personnally, i play guitar, and as i'm studying medecine, I could teach you some about muscle memory...I agree with you that he is not thinking aout each note he's playing, actually he thinks about none, if he did, he couldn't put so much soul in it!but he is not encouraging himself!!!it seems to me that he's simply unhappy with his playing...nobody understand what you're saying because it doesn't make sense...

  • he's unhappy with his playing? your words... and then you insist he doesn't want to play better?

don't be an ass. players are always chiding themselves to play better during recitals. why do you think tommys any different. it's understood he's the best but why isn't he allowed to be human and want to play better if he thinks he is playing below his level?

that any of you think i'm attacking him speaks volume about your own limitations and not mine.

  • You first have to learn how to spell "Medicine". ;)

  • john williams plays more difficult pieces BY thinking, reading straight off the staves

doesnt mean he's a better player, personally i think tommy is much more versatile and downright skillful, but im just saying something this complex can be achieved by thinking rather than by learning by heart

  • well said johved

    he derserves it

look at the work he put into that song

    wow...

  • I guess you are talking about his divorce. It was in that period I'd guess.

  • -that's right, this version is a semitone (capo/2nd fret) up from the CD version (capo/1st fret),not a whole step as I previously thought

  • Inspite of some partial missfires w\left hand fretting (?) his performance still speaks bigtime...but just after the last note sounds you can hear this "hmmm"(translated-"damn... what the hell's going on here?").

  • this version is a whole step capoed up compared to the album version

  • he talks with his music! awesome!

  • haha, during his first crescendo listen to him shout "come on!" I do that too that made me smile

  • beautiful song, that i cant find anywhere else :\

  • There needs to be a new word specifically to describe how great Tommy is...

  • what kind of guitars does he use?

  • Maton (not Martin)

  • haha thanks, i figured it out after i asked. haha

  • I agree with karatefighter2000.

I love this version better than I do on his endless road. not sure why. sounds more magical?

  • ive kind athought most songs when played either up a semitone or down a semi tone sounds different but still fantastic

  • if im not mistaken, he made a mistake at 1:27 :P

    BUT I DONT CARE!

learning how to play this song at the moment, probs play it for my HSC exams. incredible song. i remember hearing it and falling in love with it straight away.

  • yeah, im contemplating doing it for my hsc as well...though there are many tommy e songs that are also in with a chance. great song!

  • This is... *sighhh* Brilliant is not an adequate enough word...

Tommy Emmanuel is the finest guitar player around. Hands down, full stop, CASE CLOSED!

  • Beautiful song, really!

  • "oh come on" Tommy! its just not good enough! jokes

    best guitarist ever

  • Heel erg mooi, heb 'm bij m'n favorieten geplaatst!

    Bedankt!

  • Thank you very much... I really like this song..

  • this sounds like something Don Ross would play =)

    beautiful!

  • Yeah, i heard him say "come on, come on"

It seems to me a very hard song as i think its all plectrum, very little hybrid picking.

Sounds great to me as well!

  • He really isnt happy through some of this though...

dont know why! I think its sounds great, (your to hard on yourself Tommy!)

  • Love it on the album and love it now. Thank you very much.

  • i love this song!!! thanks for uploading never seen it live!

  • I love your videos, so rare=) thank you. more Tommy :)

  • More rare stuff! This is not a song that really gripped me when listening to the Endless Road CD. :) Sometimes hearing (and seeing) Tommy play them live kinda gives a different perspective.

    Great stuff!

  • Thank's for deciding to post this! Amazing!
