I learnt that the theme from "Gondoliera" is the same from "Tasso", Liszt's 2nd symphonic poem, a theme, he he heard somewhere in Venise. For me, it has nothing to do with Tasso, and I didn't hear anything similar between Tasso and Gondoliera.
I heard this piece by Berezovsky a few days ago when he was making perfomance in Moscow. He played it absolutely different way. He is great pianist and every time he plays according his feeling at the moment!

He plays the piece mechanically , too fast and without the quiet beginning like e.g. Lazar berman

I actually prefere it too be louder in the beginning he plays it clearly

@SwePianoholic listen to the recording of a young german pianist Alexander Krichel, he plays it just like you describe it... beautiful!
