i am not Greek at all. I am Dominican but born in the USA.....cause of Alexander and the ancient Greeks is why i am joining the U.S military---I am a history major and will take up ancient history for my masters......all bcuz of Megas Alexandros...
With the future of Rome being so uncertain and vulnerable at this time, this meant without a doubt NO Roman Empire.
But on the other hand, were the Greeks really born for an Empire??, although their huge influence and long&rich history at the time they never really got further than a group of more or less independent city states and they couldn't control their colonies. Would Alexander huge Empire have been collapsed anyways?
@sieskuhh most likely alexander would have been an absentee king at best. He had an incredible talent for conquest but near the end of his life he was already exhibiting signs of meglomania. His empire would most likely would have collapsed anyway after his death even if it occured many years later. Governing empires was a hobby at best to him not his main focus and he would have grown bored and tyrannical at home.
love this movie, some good parts like the music and fight scenes, but some gay scenes its really disconcerting, really who wants to see 2 men in love, if u want that go watch broke back mountain
Do you know what is the name of the music when tholom descibes the war in the north of Persia? The one that sounds a bit like "the drums of gaugamela", I can't find it. Thank you.
@Sandcloaked Nothing is wrong with me. It's called "taste". Synthesizers won't ever sound as full or epic as a proper Orchestra in my humble opinion. But moreover, the synth sound just doesn't fit this movie. Synths are great for instance, in de soundtrack of Blade Runner. Different setting calls for a different sound approach.
This is absolutely the worst imaginable soundtrack to a movie like Alexander! I turned off the movie at some point because of the music. With a setting and theme, so epic, I would've expected a good orchestral soundtrack with ethnic influences mixed in. Instead we get this cheap, outdated, synth crap.
That worked great for Chariots of Fire, and somewhat ok for 1492... but not for this...
@Dandymusic81 Wtf is wrong with you? If you think this music didn't fit well with the movie. You must have something wrong with your hearing. I think Vangelis did a terrific job with this soundtrack making it as epic as humanly possible. I doubt that any orchestra could get better than this, synthesizers are the best modern soundtrack makers around. Which is also a reason why Vangelis is renowned across the world as a superb composer.
this is such a lovelly piece of music massive fan of Vangelis after watching blade runner fell in love with his music. i usuall listen to hard house and trance but this is nice to chill to
Fantastic, alot of the time the soundtrack is overlooked when talking about a film. i personally think this soundtrack is just as good as or dare i say, even better than the film:D
@MichaelJacksonFan000 The music doesn't resemble the film. The music is beautiful, but they portray the film for entertainment, not history. And the history is the great part. Was Alexander a homosexual? No. Did Philip treat Alexander with as much kindness as portrayed in the film? No. And alot of other things are not true.
The film was made for entertainment. Not showing the beauty of what Alexander did, and the horrible things he did as well.
@TheAntiochus Which film did you see before writing that your comment ? Not this one. Alexander wasn't "a homosexual", but Hephaistion was the great love of his life (and it wasn't an issue in their times), hence the joke that "Alexander was never defeated, except by Hephaistion's thighs" that was quoted in the film.
As for Philip, the beauty of what Alexander did, and the horrible things he did too, they're all in there if you watch and listen. Some events were moved about, but even so ...
Young alexander is the best one. Im so proud from my countrys history .. So great nation . Very very beautiful but very very dark history .. So much wars , we have been trough a lot . But everytime we have gotten our freedom . Megas alexandros we will never forget you . Viva le Hellas , we will never forget you.
@DonEllada Interesting, but think of this for a moment. Hitler was German, and I am German, the Nazi's started in the German Province of Bavaria, and I am Bavarian. Do not become to proud of where you come from due to how somebody famous (or infamous) somebody is. Human pride is more a source a folly than of strength. Alexander was a great historic figure, but he was also a tyrant and foolhardy, like him if you must, but that doesn't make you anything more special than anyone else...
@pspboy7 Hitler had over 7 million people murdered for no reason (Jews, disabled people, homosexual and bisexual men, political opponents, Soviet prisoners of war, Jehovah's Witnesses, Romanies, Tziganes, pacifists...), Alexander believed that other people had the right to live as long as they didn't try to harm him or those under his protection. And he was forgiving, which Hitler wasn't. Don't compare people who aren't comparable.
@NapoleonCalland "As long as they didn't try to harm him.." is quit subjectif isn't it? Don't forget that history is written by the winners or if you prefer Napoleons words; "History is the version of past events that people have decided to agree upon." Alexander was a winner.... Hitler was a loser but would we judge him the same way today if he'd have won WWII? Maybe we would even agree that he did the right things. I'm not saying he did, on the contrary, but be carefull when you read history:)
@nico1831 Trying harm someone, ie "attempting to rape and pillage someone" is not subjective ! It's the same difference as stated in the definition of freedom according to the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen : the right to do whatever doesn't harm others. Hitler persecuted people for their beliefs, whereas Alexander was concerned by peoples actions.
@NapoleonCalland do you really believe that alexander did'nt harm a single soul? you give very narrow definition of "to harm". I don't know if you're aware of the fact that alexander ordered massiv migrations to improve the expansion of the hellenistic culture. This kind of practise has also been prohibited by the same declaration you're speaking about. You can also speak of cultural imperialism. And guess who did the same things 70 years ago... Hitler.Hstory is subjectif. The winner takes t all.
@NapoleonCalland I just add this to my previous post: i'm not syaing that hitler and alexander where equals.First there was a different historical context of course. 2.alex. wanted the best for the conquered "barbarians" but still what's the best?. Hitler also wanted the best for the german people ( alex was "Greater" then hitler as he wished the best to all the living people) But the results are the same; they both had to cause harm, both empire collapsed wich created more chaos afterwards.
The young alexander part was so beautiful. Best part of this song and in the movie when he tames the horse just after he is laughed at by the whole idea.
It was a good movie, but as for the real person, all he wanted was glory. The dream of alexander was that the whole world would be ruled by one. That wouldnt work out for the greater good even if someone succeeds in it.
In the end, humans only tend to care about themselves and the ones closest to them. Unknown people's loss doesnt hurt
This piece is a reflection of his reign which is why I think it is very majestic and powerful. No we don't need men like him today because in todays society there would be nothing confrntation...but there willnever be anyone to compare him to thats for sure. Alexander the Great is truly one of a kind.
yes he was truely ahead of his time. Although if he had lived he would not have made a good king of all that territory. His constant excursions into other countries would mean he would have been an absentee leader and he was showing more and more signs of meglomania before his death. All in all though still the greatest general ever to live and one of the most fascinating people in history.
I'm sure he would have made a good king. He just wanted glory. He had able regents governing for him while he was on campaign like Antipater, and he was going to have Craterus be the new regent when he got back to Babylon but when Craterus was in like Cappadocia or something, he got the news that Alexander was dead.
Well he definately would have had glory we agree on that. I only say absentee king because before he died he was already making plans for further campaigns to the west when he got back to greece. Most likely staesmen of some kind would have made due with the daily affairs of running state. Alexanders actions show him to be a great military leader and city builder but as for the doldrum of day to day affairs i think he would have died of boredom. Plus his meglomania only would have grown over time
A lot of the history written about Alexander, was written by people that didn't like him. But really, how can you conquer that much land and not have a bit of an ego?
I commented this on another Alexander Soundtrack-video but it's well worth to say again: Mr Vangelis is a true genius!
