No player's average has been more negatively affected by a single bowler. Take innings against McGrath out of the reckoning and it touches 50. Odd because he played Pollock really well.
I love athers..brilliant mind and a thorough gentleman cricketer when there was a scarcity of them in that era..steadied's england's ship throughout the 90's except against australia..At 18.42 you can see that he is deeply disappointed - disappointment of having tried but failed for your country. his problem with Mcgrath is he played him on backfoot most of time and didnt leave too many balls outside offstump. i love his commentary. he and hussain are the most insightful. Best with Bill lawry
The hallmark of a great bowler - looks like he detected early Athers wasn't quite comfortable against the extra bounce, even if somewhat fortuitously down the leg side. But just look at how relentlessly he preys on that .. inch-perfect bouncers, in that channel outside off, movement either way off the seam. Easy as it sounds - incredible control! Treasure of a video.
What I noticed is that Atherton received a lot of short pitched bowling from McGrath and most times he was out also he never scored a 50 when McGrath got him out
poor mcgrath stands no way near to legends akram nd younis who plays most cricket in subcontinent on dead wickets.... its jst dat pitches outside subcontinent suits cunts lik mcgrath...FAIR DINKUM robe... good on u 4 posting dis vid
@robelinda It's much better in India than in Sri Lanka and Pakistan. That proudindian0173 is most certainly an idiot, because he fails to realise something. If a player plays that long he would end up having one or two bad tours.
The man averages 21 runs per wicket in India. If that is not exceptional bowling on dead tracks, I wonder what is.
Thanks for that - can't say I enjoyed it seeing as I'm an England supporter, but well put together! ; ) Couple of ropey decisions but what surprised me was the amount of legside dismissals. Good batsman though. Great bowler.
Poor Athers. My all time favorite test innings is his epic 185 not out in South Africa to save the test. A truly old school innings and one of the best of all time. It summed Athers up perfectly. Back against the wall, tenacious and trying to stave off defeat. Not a great batsman by any means but the best we had at that time. Opening against McGrath, Akram, Younis, Ambrose, Walsh and Donald was not easy.
Now he is one of the best commentators in the game. God bless Iron Mike.
@averythehero Yep he was a hero of mine, and i think he is one of the best commentators of all time, not just a current great, I love his commentary! Ive uploaded full series highlights of that 95/96 test series in south africa on my other channel, good viewing!

Goes to show you need the basics of line and length and you can get any of the best batsmen with the latest bat technology OUT without needing to be express pace. No one in the current era can bowl as accurately and intelligently as McGrath. Genuine class, Pidge!
@mymentor - Does it matter whether someone has 0, 10 or even hundred centuries!, infact, how many Test centuries do you happen to have "mymentor" ?
Not only has M.Atherton been dismissed by G.McGrath on 19 occasions (more than his actual 16 Test centuries!) but also G.McGrath's 563 Test wickets is a much better ratio than M.Atherton's 16 century's, & that's a Englisman sayin all this...

@mymentor - "Two first-grade centuries" - Good for you.
I'm not calling Mr. Atherton "Pathetic"........i'm calling his actual 19 dismissals to Mr. McGrath "Pathetic"!, there's a difference!, if you had read my original text right you would originally understand.
...since the last Ashes series, where England destroyed the pathetic Australian side in every department. What Australia wouldn't give for a bowler 1/8th of McGrath's pedigree now.

This was really good bowling by McGrath, but, Athers could of avoided about 10 of these dismissals

Bunch of crappy umpire decisions, but doesn't detract from the fact that McGrath was an awesome bowler.

@Crkt4Eva
I have zero test centuries. Two first-grade centuries in Western Australian penant cricket, for the record.
Then again, I don't feel the need to call players who have played at the highest level "pathetic".
