This isn't a civil war. This is a government against its own people. This is genocide and ethnic cleansing, similar to what we saw from Germany in World War II. There is no doubt that the U.N. needs to get involved in this, forcefully or otherwise.
But the US didn't get involved in WWII until Pearl Harbor. It didn't have anything to do with genocide. WWII had been going on for 4 years before that and "ethnic cleansing" had been in practice since the 1930s!
You're misunderstanding the two situations. The reason why we didn't initially involve ourselves was because we were one country: USA. We had our own isolationist interests and our own sovereignty to protect. The UN is a collection of most countries in the world. There is no self interest in the UN because it isnt one country. The UN has no excuse for not taking action. This isn't comparable to World War II--actually WWII was the whole reason the UN was created in the first place.

Most of the Fur and Zaghawa and Masalit are Muslims. In fact they were some of the first Muslims in Sudan. And they are not tribes, they are ethnic groups made up of many tribes of people, as are the Arab speaking peoples in the same area.

He continually appeals to the UN to take action, and sends the message out through this video and other appearances. I don't get why just because people are rich and famous, people like you don't respect them if they are doing things. It's like people expect celebs to have all the answers to everything, BUT when they do start coming up with solutions, people criticize it as a cheap publicity stunt

George - I admire the fact that you and your father have gone to experience the genocide in Darfur first-hand. I hope awareness can bring about change. If you go back to AFRICA, could you also go to N. Uganda and do a piece on the Invisible Childrend? Most people have heard about Darfur, but, not as many about the villages in N. Uganda...like Kitgum. Finally, could you get the sponsers of American Idol Gives Back to say where all of the money (almost 17 million) went?

This isn't a civil war. This is a government against its own people. This is genocide and ethnic cleansing, similar to what we saw from Germany in World War II. There is no doubt that the U.N. needs to get involved in this, forcefully or otherwise.

But the US didn't get involved in WWII until Pearl Harbor. It didn't have anything to do with genocide. WWII had been going on for 4 years before that and "ethnic cleansing" had been in practice since the 1930s!

You're misunderstanding the two situations. The reason why we didn't initially involve ourselves was because we were one country: USA. We had our own isolationist interests and our own sovereignty to protect. The UN is a collection of most countries in the world. There is no self interest in the UN because it isnt one country. The UN has no excuse for not taking action. This isn't comparable to World War II--actually WWII was the whole reason the UN was created in the first place.

Unfortunately, they do not attempt to get to the root of the problem which is essentially a natural resource issue. Lake Chad is almost completely dry due to Global Warming (most likely) which has created an incredible amount of pressure for scarce resources. We are killing Iraqi's for resources as well. Why doesn't George go to Iraq?

Clooney does not call it the Sudan problem because Clinton would also be implicated. Lake Chad is drying up because of deforestation...not warming. Same reason Mount Killamanjaro has less snow.

That's interesting armourup. Have you ever been to the Sudan? Do you even know anyone from there? I have and do. This problem is not just in the Sudan. It's all over Africa my friend. Why is it just the "Arab Muslims" doing the killing? Btw, The janjaweed are NOT Arabs, they're Africans. Arabs live in..uumm..Arabia maybe? The US has killed hundreds of thousands in Iraq from war and they are Christians. Go figure.

that civil war was over in 2006 and for your information naw one of the leaders of the SPLA is a senior in the government of the Sudan who is cristian by the way, that war took place since the Sudans indipendance from the "British ocupation" that ended in 1956 and it got worse in the 80's so it did not just take place 1995 through 2000 infact the peace process was during that time and that war is over naw!

Most of the Fur and Zaghawa and Masalit are Muslims. In fact they were some of the first Muslims in Sudan. And they are not tribes, they are ethnic groups made up of many tribes of people, as are the Arab speaking peoples in the same area.

mrkevinj, I agree with you to some extent. Yes, this thing started out as a herders vs farmers conflict. Then it turned into a govt vs Fur/Zaghawa/Masalit conflict. Some people who farm are Arab speaking, and a lot of the people who herd are non-Arabs. Some Janjaweed are also non-Arab. But you're 100% right about these celebrities. Like most Americans they know nothing about the conflicts they talkabout. Where were they from 1983 to 2004?
