And the only reason he didn't end in San Francisco was money - the Giants were in a downward spiral financially, and Horace Stoneham, the owner, wanted to make sure Willie was taken care of financially. Mrs, Payson with the Mets had been trying to get Willie for years. I think it's cool he got to go to the WS in his final year.
Willie's last start in his career, 1st game of the '73 series in Oakland (he got to end his career in the bay area and in New York-in the world series!).
In game 2, in his last at bat in the bay area great old SF Hero Willie Mays didnt "FEAR THE 'STACHE," driving a 12th inning RBI single off young up and coming fellow bay area hero/Hall of Famer Rollie Fingers in the 12th inning for the winning run.
2 days later, Sey Hey called it a day, with one last pinch hitting appearance in

It's funny how we perceive things in sports, we see ball players as an old men once they reach late 30's early 40's, but the reality is they are still young men with the rest of their lives ahead of them. Willie was still a young man at this point with a long future ahead of him.
