Billfreaks, you are invited to a beautiful Bill Evans master class on YT! The class includes an in-depth analysis of Bill's classic solo performance "A Time for Love". You will LOVE this, promise:) Type in "Dave Frank" Bill Evans on YT.
Scot Lafaro and bill evans were, are, and probably always will be, the greatest bass - piano combination ever. This song is made even more poignant by the fact that scott died in a car crash shortly after it was made. This song will be played at my funeral.
@GozTheGreat thanks, but the real answer is, the lead sheet is for the title track, 'waltz for debby,' and not, 'foolish heart.' i wasn't paying attention...
I found myself in Copenhagen a few years ago with this playing over and over but tonight I am in my garage in Central Texas on a cold winter night enjoying the same vibes. This is really special stuff by Bill.
Always a joyous experience listening to this. My Foolish Heart was the third tune of the Bill Evans Trio's first afternoon set at the Village Vanguard in New York that Sunday June 25th 1961. The trio played five sets altogether that Sunday. Interestingly, ironically, the first set opened with LaFaro's 'Gloria's Step' and the last set closed with his 'Jade Visions'.
A few years ago I spent several weeks in the middle of the winter in Copenhagen. Many of those days I spent sitting in my window staring at the snow with a pot of coffee,some fine Christiania smoke,and an I-pod player with this song playing over and over. About as peaceful surroundings as I have ever had.
I knew this song since I was in college, and I think this is the version i heard. This song is with me no matter I'm down or up. I can listen to it over and over again. and yes to tsnrhm, it is to me Bill's unofficial theme song.
I have to agree, this is the best version. It sounds fresh, sensitive and captures the brooding spirit Evans was known for. He doesn't over-embellish the ending as he did in later versions. This became his unofficial theme song and he probably just played it too many times to maintain that sensitivity.
Close your eyes briefly but without rush, wrap yourself with the finest silk, caress the most luxurious velvet, drink the finest Bordeaux and kiss your first love on the cheek, feel it, it is the most elegant expression of love turned to music.
I never post comments at YouTube. I will for this gem..wow. As a pianist, if I could ever approach that level of sensitivity in my lifetime, I would die a happy man.
OMG! Bill Evans...what depth, what passion...musicianship... ingenius chord substitutions... and then somebody says, "Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli is beautiful music". Sweet Jesus!

why is the lead sheet in F?
utubuser10 9 months ago
@utubuser10
F is the original key of the song.
In this Evans marvelous cover it's in A. I thing for it sounds better with "open low notes" on bass.

Exact.
You can find the lead sheet in the "old real book" (p. 307).
It's in Bb.
