  • God, there is nobody like Mitch.

  • My aunt met him. She was thrilled.

  • These shows are very, very dated....

  • @johnnycheck99 well, duh!

  • @johnnycheck99 Perhaps it's because the were made a very, very long time ago. Just a thought...

  • swedish accent!?

  • Comment removed

  • Listen to those girls in the audience scream! I was squealing too....

  • He does not sing on horse back? this must be before 1955 then...

  • he was a real hollywood star*****-the kind you dont get these days-

  • Mitchum has got to be talking about Belafonte's song Day-O. It came out around that time and would have driven me crazy too :0)

  • i absolutely adore Arlene when she laughs in that deep voice

  • I loved this show and I thank everyone for the postings. My only issue with the program, and this was a problem from day 1 until the show ended, was that the panelists and the guests always had a hard time hearing each other. Endless hours were spent asking people to repeat things. Couldn't they ever get the accoustics or sound systems corrected?!

  • a true bad ass movie star

  • He was employed for the duration of the war as a worker in a factory (or plant if you are American) constructing military aircraft, a fact that is well documented.

  • Goegeous

  • 'He has a great signature

  • A man's man

  • Now that's what I call a movie star. Not to mention father figure.

  • a real mans man Ex marine Sargeant Great actor

  • @cpnstav get your facts straight, Mitchum was never in the military at any time.

  • @cpnstav

Me thinks this about same time Thunder Road was made, great movie & Mitchum starring made it even better?

    You must be confusing his on screen role as ex-serviceman that saw action in Korea, don't believe he ever served however;

  • He has a great Irish accent here

  • I heard he had a photographic memory and only had to read his script once.

  • intelligence on display, arlene and dorothy were hot!!!...i was 3years old at the time of this broadcast

  • I like how he says "Well ain't that a bitch." 3:43

  • He is great here

  • @jeannielovesrick62 Watch the door on the way out

  • "Ma'am, I've been in more westerns than there are horses in the west." I love his sense of humor. I know him from The Winds of War, and he is a fabulous actor :D

  • @jeannielovesrick62 not true...that was a rumour spread by Tony Curtis while making "the Defiant Ones"...Curtis claimed that Mitchum did not want to be chained to Sidney Poitier because he was black. The reality was (as said in an interview by Mitchum) was that because he had actually been on a chain gang in the south in his youth, he knew that blacks and whites would NEVER to chained together. Mitchum was his own man and was not ruled by PC Hollywood.

  • Mitchum is the best! The story about him not liking wok with colored ppl is a jest, not true. Reading Lee Server

  • his voice is so distinctive I am surprised they did not get it after the 3rd question

  • Mitchum was so naturally funny, he must have been a gas to work with!

  • This is absolute genius!

  • Thanks so much for posting! Love the guy...

  • See how all the fellas are wearing suit/tuxes and the women are all wearing nice dresses. why can't anyone dress like that anymore?

    F.Y.I: I'm 19

  • @LS7335 So do I. And I'm 19, too.

  • @LS7335 Sluttiness, yes, that's bad. But as far as wearing expensive clothes and having to look very neat and clean and proper all the time, why is that necessary? It's what's on the inside that counts. As cliche as that phrase is.

  • @blackhorse099 I get what you're saying but I'd have to agree, it would really make a change to see people make an effort like this on TV these days. Maybe not all the time, sure, but for some programmes other than award ceremonies.

    FYI I'm 26 lol

  • @LS7335 People DO dress like this... just not in the sloppy USA where everyone is as fat as a cow and wear their trousers knee high waddling around like stupid moronic imbeciles.

  • @dangraphic LMAO HAHAHAHA

  • Just saw Cape Fear and De Niro really had his work cut out for him. Great guy Robert Mitchum!!

  • Totally enjoyed this

    Cheers :-)

  • Game over the second he opened his mouth.

  • Where's The Cloak?

  • Heaven Knows Mr Allison with Debra Kerr. An all time classic, and they are talking in the present tense. How great is that. We are so lucky to see this.

  • He was like the ultimate badass. Man, I sure wish I had his style.

  • @SaUrOrNiThOiDeS

I don't believe anyone in holllywood (now days) has any style ... Robert Mitchum had it all.

  • Probably the most under-rated actor of all time.

  • The audience nearly defened me!!!! A great actor - one of my favourites

  • Mitchum did too much talking, he was way too evident. His voice is unmistakable!

  • @deepseadirt May I quote you, "too much talking" - I could listen to him talk all day!

  • @BunchofMovieVideos the show wasn't the venue for him to be talking, he was supposed to respond in disguise. Don't get me wrong, I like Bob Mitchum too, the movie he talks about HEAVEN KNOWS MR ALLISON is one of my favorites of his. RYAN'S DAUGHTER is another. But lets face it, he fumbled this one.

  • @deepseadirt These were set-up shows anyway, the guests knew exactly who the star guest was from the start, at least a couple of them would have been told in advance. These shows were simply made to plug new films that were coming out and to sell products (hence the large adverts for shaving products on their table). Mitchum was probably fumbling it, as you say, because he knew all that and wasn't really taking it too seriously.

  • I don't think that's the case Bunch. The GAME SHOWS like 21 were rigged to a large extent we know. But these panelists are not such good actors that they could feign being puzzled convincingly. But Arlene and others were gossip columnists and socialites who had certain inside info aside from the immediate participation on What's My Line. Even THEY had to have fun. And hey, wasn't Mitch just the coolest dude there was?

  • @BunchofMovieVideos If that was the case then why didn't any of them guess FREDRIC MARCH when he was on there? True they knew of the stars releasing movies, appearing in New York, and their careers in general. That's why the panelist ask specific questions. But I wouldn't say the show was rigged or set up judging from having seen many of these.

  • ive just started watching these clips an i just love them love robert mitchum to to bad we dont have shows like this today rip robert mitchum

  • BY GOD I love Robet Mitchum.

  • Is "Mr. Gable" who I think it is?

  • @f756t7t6 It's not Clark if that who you were thinking of.

  • @f756t7t6

That's Martin Gable, Arlene Francis' husband

  • @19tc85

    Many thanks for the clarification.

  • @f756t7t6

    Your very welcome.

  • lmao, the Norwegian-American accent at 01:24 was hilarious and spot-on. No surprise though, since Mitchum's mom was Norwegian.

  • @filmidioten, Mitchum was part Norwegian? That's interesting because I have an Uncle who resembles him and he has Norwegian ancestry as well.

  • @Muirmaiden Yes he was 50% Norwegian, his last starring role was even in a Norwegian film, to quote Wikipedia: "His last film appearance was in the television biopic, James Dean: Race with Destiny. His last starring role was in the 1995 Norwegian movie Pakten, a final nod to his Norwegian ancestry."

  • @filmidioten, thanks for the info. It may explain the resemblance my uncle bears to Mitchum (I am part Norwegian as well).

  • You can be the meridian vase

  • sexy sexy man

  • He was the Best ever!

I met him and Loved him!

  • His smile at 3:47 is sooo sexy...

  • a real man.

  • @Pravoizavlijesvijeta

I dunno, the way he minces off stage at the end primes my gaydar somewhat.

  • Deary me, I think my panties just snapped.

  • What if they were to bring this show back? Undoubtedly, they'd ask no talent flops like the cast of "Twilight" or Zac Efron to be on it...but I'm sure there would be good actors today that could appear on the new version of "What's My Line?"

  • Damn his signature was dope

  • an underated actor rip

  • Mitchum was such a natural, charming guy......and devastatingly handsome! This, my friends, is the real deal: the Alpha Male.

After they made him, they broke the mold.....!!

  • Way too obvious. There is no mistaking that voice!

  • The way he raises his eyebrows at .35 secs is like "Here we go again" . It cracks me up. Vintage Mitch.

  • Fantastic man. Slainte - Bob, we miss ya.

  • These great actors died with Hollywood.

  • he was one of the best of the best actors .sadly miss his talent.

  • What a Legend. Brilliant.

  • That first response-"Huh?-is hysterical! Mitch's dialects are really spot on. What a guy to have a drink with. He appeared tough but really good company.

  • Agreed!

  • This clip is so freakin fantastic!

  • Bob wrote Thunder Road for Elvis including the theme song. The Colonel didn't think a movie about bootlegging in Tennessee would suit the king's image, so Bob got his son Jim to play the part and Bob sang the song himself. It would be hard to imagine a better role for Elvis at a time when he'd just completed King Creole and needed a good dramatic part, the colonel chose G.I. Blues. Poor old Elvis , no wonder he sought refuge in Dilaudid, Demerol, Seconal, Percodan etc.

  • Some blokes should never age, never die. He was one of them. We loved you Robert Mitchum

  • Nobody made it look easier than Bob Mitchum. He was just damned brilliant and knew what he was doing

  • HAHA the cloak

  • I liked him and his son in Thunder Road a black and white movie .

  • As I type these words I'm about 100 pages into Lee Server's brilliant biography of him.

    What a man.

  • I am considering taking this up to read. Would you recommend it to pass the time with??

  • Go for it Trevor, it's a brilliant read.

  • Cool Mate,

    thanks for the

    recommendation!

    Sláinte

  • How cool was Mitchum? They named a deodorant after him. And he was the best Phillip Marlowe after to grace the silver screen.

  • Mitchum is absolutely one of a kind but Dick Powell made a great Marlowe, too.

  • Absolutely. He was a damn good Marlowe in Murder, My Sweet. Pretty silly that RKO changed the title from Farewell, My Lovely—which was the actual title of the Chandler novel.

  • The studio changed the title because the they thought "Farewell My Lovely" sounded too much like the fluffy musicals Powell used to star in. They thought it would confuse audiences.

Dick Powell is my favorite Marlowe.

  • My younger brother was just a tot when we watched "Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison" on the afternoon movie one summer, but to this day he'll still quote it: "OK, Joe, you get grenade!"

  • I love it "You're not Deborah Kerr, so you must be Robert Mitchum"

  • Wow, he got more squeals than I've heard in a while. :D

  • one of the best actors ever

  • Bob was the last of the iron Assed Loners- One of the most solitary and isolated of Hollywood Elite- He was never one to pander to the "media /press /tabloids"

  • CHALUPAZ

  • Ditto 100% on his portrayal in Cape Fear. In the day, actors new how to act. He was marvelous.

  • Deborah Kerr and Robert Mitchum. One of all-time favorite screen couples. Mr. Allison was good, but The Sundowners is my favorite.

  • IIII want to be the battleship.

  • They should have asked him if he had ever been busted for smoking pot. (He Had) That movie "Heaven knows Mr. Allison" was pretty good. His version of "Cape Fear" was really scary. Better than the remake. I highly recommend it.

  • Or they could have asked him if he were cleared of the charges (it was a setup)after having served time.THAT is a truth few remember. However in the long run it did him no harm. He was cheered in the theatres - following that episode - when

Rachel and the Stranger was released to the public.

  • "Huh?". That is awesome. Mitch rocked, pure and simple.

  • That voice is too recognizable.

  • I envy him to for working with Deborah!!!! He's to handsome!

  • he had swag before anybody knew what swag was

    it was in his face

    love him

  • Oooh, Mittens...

  • i like shrimpies

  • Sorry Robert, were not getting any shrimp.

  • A natural linguist. I'm impressed. I use to watch all his movies. Loved to watch him walk his walk. Sort of like John Wayne. Thanks for posting this.

  • Man, just ask the "are you appearing in a movie that will be showing in New York" upfront. These appearances, while enjoyable in retrospect, were pure plugs.

  • Ah yes. Nothing changes.

  • Just goes to show - pure sex appeal and charisma goes a lot farther than a "pretty," vapid face - those girls knew what they were screaming for.

  • "ive appeared in more westerns than there are horses" lol classic.

  • "Do u sing on horseback?" Mitchum is killing....

  • Wow...those gals in the audience sure screamed their heads off in regards to Bob. Almost as if he was a young rock and roll star! i think the late great Bob Mitchum was a very underated actor. A true original talent. Thanks for sharing this with us! :)

  • He has a really cool signature.

  • You can be the maridian vaaaaaaazzzzzze

  • the wat?

    THE MARIDIAN VAAAAAAAAAAAAAZZZZZZZZZZZZEEEEEEE

  • he's a character in the cloak its funny but he was a great acter

  • My favorite Mitchum was "Home From The Hill" with George Peppard and George Hamilton. It was an older Robert Mitchum but one of his best.

  • I loved Mitchum--"Night of the Hunter," "Cape Fear," "A Killer in the Family." Love those sleepy-looking eyes, the brooding look. Great actor!

  • What year was this? Mitchum was the coolest man alive!

  • Dude, was Mitchum handsome. Awesome actor.

  • I worked with Robert Mitchum in Reno,Nevada on a Picture called Matilda. Not something he would of done, however, the producer,Abert Ruddy was his neighbor in Santa Barbara. The film was about a boxing kangaroo. Robert Mitchem played

a sports writer for a newspaper. What really spoke volumes to me was the fact that he ate lunch with us Extras insted of eating with the Principal actors in the film. We all walked over about 10 of us and he sat down with us to have lunch.

  • Man, all the screams from the girls had me laughing! LOL =P

    ~Jade808~

  • love him. he is sooo sexy, great actor to :)

  • He used to play bridge with my God-Mother. Only heard good things about him. Thanks for the clip!

  • He used to play lawn-darts with my cousin's next-door neighbor.

  • "Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison" is my very favorite Mitchum film.....I never tire of it.

    WOW, he's handsome, isn't he?!?

  • I agree. That is a very good movie, and I can watch it anytime.

  • Such a big guy, but he floats when he walks ... intriguing.

  • Ah, just like today, they appear on TV as a movie promo. Good actor.

  • Oh myyyyyy so gorgeous ....

  • Thanks for posting this wonderfully rare video. A great actor and personality.

  • I love how he says 'I beg your pardon' the first time, when Dorothy asks him if he has anything to do with Rock and Roll. LOL

  • Great classic TV show! Robert Mitchum is a breed of actor that is pretty much, with few exceptions, extinct. The likes of Mitchum, Heston, Lancaster, Douglas, Cooper, Gable, Wayne, Stewart, Peck, Marvin, Fonda, Ladd....will never be seen again.

  • Check out his interviews with Dick Cavett, which are on youtube.

  • the southern accent shoulda gave him away...

  • Dear god, the screaming at the beginning! It's like Elvis has just walked in!

  • In those days, the young folks screamed for EVERY movie star and rock and roll star! Even Ernest Borgnine used to get mobbed by teenagers!

  • Comment removed

  • This guy was a genius.

  • ..dam,I miss those days!

  • So masculine--so handsome.

  • Beef--It's what's for dinner.

  • @Marckymarc71 Mmm, with a little bit of cake for dessert too! ;)

  • I am a big fan... he also did a movie called

" fire down below " with jack lemmon filmed in trinidad a and tobago.

  • I have an uncle who has a similar voice and a similar sleepy-eyed look . . . . but of course, there was only one Robert Mitchum! Very handsome fellow indeed, perfect Irish brogue, but how could they not guess that voice? It's unmistakable! Dorothy's rock 'n roll question was hinting close because Mitchum did sing occasionally and cut a few albums, but more of a baritone crooner ballad style.

"I've been in more Westerns than there are horses!" LOL.

    Thanks for posting.

  • The sexiest man of classic film. I think when most ladies see him they automatically think about the bedroom. I know I do.

  • His Irish accent was spot on - I should know - I'm Irish

  • Heaven Knows Mr Allison! Great film. Any yes ladies, speaking as a guy with taste-Mr Mitchum was a pretty cool looking honcho.

  • SEXY!!!!

  • THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU! I have wanted to see this for such a long time! Fantastic! :)

  • What a sexy man!!! I feel like blushing and I'm by myself!! :)
