I think Hermann Prey was a superb singer and actor. It would be very difficult to find another version of this aria sung with so much flair, intelligence, audacity and taste. He was wonderful. We miss him dearly.
if u are studying opera singing maybe u should know that "The Gipsy Baron" is an operetta, not an opera...if u would google it you would see that in an operetta is a medley of singing and talking...
You just don't want to hear the truth...He is talking, not singing, there is No tempo, the orchestra and singer doesn't play together... So who are intelligent? I am studying opera singing and i can hear talking and singing.
I'm reminded of a quote (I believe by Stravinsky) which basically says that all music can be categorized into song and dance. It turns out that not all vocal pieces are songs and all instrumental pieces dances. Here, Prey is singing a dance, if you will. His choice of intepretation is fitting, to my ears. Hard for a dance to be lyric or legato, it must have strong accents.
Oh, written like a true Philistine. And you can do better?
This isn't Wagner! And this is probably the best production of this operetta (remember this is OPERETTA!!!) you will ever see in your lifetime! Get real. One of the most intelligent, lively and truly ENTERTAINING productions ever.
Yes, I am aware of it, nonetheless this is "Die Fledermaus" - he was singing in Prince Orlofsky's ball - did you pay attention to the beginning of the video or to the video title?

I actually cannot understand what he is saying. Is it another language? My Uncle Bill actually was the Gypsy Baron almost a half-century ago, and his performances were recorded, but I cannot imagine him singing in another language.
I didn't know that it was supposed to be sung in a different language. And I don't take German. I'll take your word for it (but I'm pretty sure my uncle got to sing it in English).
Im sad to say I dont know of this opera. But my school is doing this next year. I am was told by my teacher she doesnt know weather to put me as baron or alfred. What part do think is better? There are two tenors at my school another guy and myself we are both good so..yea..its hard to pick. Which should I push for more?
Well, It is a bit confusing. It's Hermann Prey in a production of Die Fledermaus, singing an aria from the Gypsy Baron (both, Johann Strauss operettas).
Prey not only stands out in the operetta "The Gipsy Baron", he is also great in "Eine Nacht in Venedig", "Der Bettelstudent". Not to mention Gasparone and Boccaccio.
Every one of those recorings are a treasure in his repertoire.

I remember this so well from these performances. Very thrilling. Prey was a glorious communicator and such a personlaity

A great performance. Someone said, by the way, that an opera ends in a death and an operetta in a marriage. You decide.

maybe Domingo introduces this area in a Fledermaus encenation. Pehaps Hermman was in a spoking role.

What Prey is singing, is form the "Zigeunerbaron", and not from "Fledermaus". Two different operettes!

Yes, this is from a production of "Die Fledermaus" in which Prey was Eistenstein, and this is the gala in Act II.

Another language compared to what? It is in the original German, and his diction is as always excellent.

Although I'm a fan of Hermann Prey and I really like this performance I prefer Richard Taubers version above Preys. It's available on Youtube too.

Alfred is my favourite, as a character. He's suppose to be very funny and in this production O'neill is fantastic. But this is just my opinion ;)

Placidissimo!!! Jaja. Outstanding, wonderfull, imposible to describe it in one word.
Beyond the funny and amusing this scene can be, Prey had one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heared. And of course a terrific actor.

This was outstanding performance! I love Prey in this role...Thanks for posting!
