  • great lesson... thanks!!!

  • John I have just put this in my Fav bar. Wanna learn from you.

    Thanks...

  • Even though I am not able to play this whole boogie like John does (jee i wonder why ;) ) It's still so freaking FUN to watch the guy playin' because he seem to enjoy this... and when you enjoy the thing you do, viewers enjoy what they see and basically it's like a carnival of enjoying...

    good stuff

    (no i am not high)

  • damn near magic ... thx so much

  • Great stuff, i really enjoy playing this riff, thanks.

  • I always thought blues was too advanced for me, but this lesson tought me otherwise. Thank you

  • My background - I started playing electric guitar again after focusing on bass for 35 years. You've made it a blast for me. I've never taken the time to learn scales and styles until I watched your videos. I have short stubby fingers and always thought I couldn't work an electric but your teaching videos have shown me that I can make some good sounds and have fun. My band mates are going to freak when I get the chance to play some electric in front of them. Thank you John!!!!

  • Just a few of these results make all the effort worthwhile. Thanks for the comments. Good luck and keep practicing.

  • I've been looking for this sound for quite a while now. Thanks for taking the mystery out of it for me!!

  • Great lesson Mr. H. Thoroughly enjoyed and absorbed.

  • a god doing what he knows best ;)

  • Joder, colega.... eres fabuloso, hay pocas personas que enseñen tan bien y tan desinteresadamente como tú. muchas gracias.

  • Johnr teaching.

    Love your music and teavhing....

I just bought a book of you from Amazon.

Beef up Sir. I Love you

  • You did for yourself as much as I could do for anyone by buying that book. Thanks a million and keep the questions coming in. John

  • @johnhguitar Would you make ONE or TWO VDO to show how basic 12-bar blues gradually transform to a more

    hit song like Malted Milk?

Cus I found that your explanation is v-good as you can show various related samples music right away.

  • When I'm teaching beginners about guitar styles I always refer to the founders: Chuck Berry, John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley, BB King, etc. People who start with the roots always later on come with the goods!

  • @montreemtx

Your boogie song sounds great wish i could hear part 3

with everything you did so far add in and put the finnish

tuch to it,,,cant wait to lission to part 3,,,,thabks good job !!!

  • Thankssss... I will

    get more from you John.

  • you rock!

  • I loves your lessons! They fit to my level so they're very useful to me!

  • Really fantastic lesson(s)!! I'm actually a tenor banjo player by trade, but I love to play blues guitar. I can only aspire to play like this... Thanks for being bold enough to put it out there. : )

  • GREAT Lesson !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Which fingers do you use looks like thumb for A string and index for D and G strings.

Thanks for all your help ....

  • Yeah, use those fingers or any that work. Get the music out anyway you can and forget trim and proper.

  • Great lesson, thanks a lot! I've been playing for quite a while, mostly self taught and it's the simplest things that you miss along the way that can really prohibit you from developing further and being more creative.

I still don't understand how major and minor pentatonic scales work though...is it that whatever chord you are on, be it A, D, or E, then you would use the pentatonic scale that correlates with that root note (ie A)?? And how can minor and major fit together then? Thanks!

  • This varies between musicians. When a song is in a key like an A7 blues; (A7 D7 E7), you can stick with an A minor pentatonic or an F# minor pentatonic (A major) throughout the entire progression, not changing with the chords. But if you want, you can follow the chord changes and play the co-relating scale for each chord, major or minor. Jazz musicians are comfortable with this movement but blues guys do that less. The blues sounds good having a simple approach.

Is that helpful? Keep it up.

  • I've been playing for years and I'm still excited about learning something new. I just came across your series of videos the other night and I take a little time each night to watch and learn from them. I really enjoy listening to you play and learning from your teaching. Please keep up the great work!

  • Thanks for the nice comments and I'm glad you're getting something out of these examples and ideas. I just want to speak out about how many bad comments and put downs I get. I'm not crying about it I'm just surprised that people look to hurt your feelings when all you're doing is trying to share a bit of information. Thank you for the positive reflection.

  • @johnhguitar Don't take it personal. Anyone who plays knows what it really takes to get there. Boogie on!!

  • @johnhguitar Pay no mind to them...let people say what they want..your lessons are great and the price is even better.Take care and nice work.

  • Sound abit like the Baby did a bad bad thing by Chris Isaak

  • I would love to come to Russia to play jazz and blues! Thanks for the comments!

  • YeahH!!!

  • What song is that it sounds so familiar

  • @guitarbaby008 it's like la grange by zz top

  • very helpful indeed. endless possibilitys to improvise over this.

  • cool, now i only need to grow a beard like billy gibbons. La Grange! :-)

  • Great lesson!

Being new to playing guitar, I really enjoy these lessons. Not too hard but not too easy, also leaves me with an idea on how to form my own little pieces to build ontop of this!

  • That's the idea. I have a creative approach to teaching which is intended to inspire the student to make up his own music that's still within a style. If you learn the foundation and a bit of the history behind a medium you can add to it and people will still hear it as blues or jazz or whatever the type. People who think there's only THESE riffs or it's not REALLY blues are too stuffy and spoiling the fun of being inventive and enjoying the pleasure of REALLY being a musician. Good luck!

  • I have found a new favorite playing style :D Your lessons are amazing - they're all so clear and well demonstrated! I've never learnt so much from an online guitar lesson, keep it up man !!

  • Oh I'm glad. There's ways to learn that aren't too boring and that's what I'm shooting for. I have these beginning students that want to learn how to play "Dragon Force" music. I can't do it. It's the world's most impossible technique for a first time beginner. These lessons hopefully help you control the guitar and give you an idea about different styles of music that can be fun to play. Thanks

  • Amazing, fun to play around with ... Hm, but were is the Bo Diddley lesson ;-) ? Thanks !

  • best lesson so far. Great job. I'm jealous of your Gibsons btw :)

  • very good

  • dude!! that's some wicked boogie man....awesome lesson.

  • Wicked indeed !

Rock this town and rock it inside out :)

    Cheers all!

  • this is awesome man. your so full of energy and all comes out in your playing. amazing job.

    -miles

  • Well thank you Miles. The boogie kept me alive having been threatened by large throngs of bikers...

  • Just terrific my friend, but I can't find the first part. Love it, very ZZTop, but with the fingerstyle picking, it has a slightly different flavor.

  • sounds alot like zztop,

what amp setting are you using?

  • It's just a Roland Cube 30 amp in the clean channel with the tone controls at 12 o'clock. The reverb control is up a bit but the room is very ambient with a lot of echo. People have complained a bit about the room sound and we've put curtains up to help with the sound. However, that natural echo is great for certain things.

  • i like the way it echos.

one of my friends put some foam padding covering all of his walls to get rid of the echo when he plays,

    it works.

  • amazing sound
