Man I love this song. I love Brian's playful, stream-of-consciousness lyrics. I wish he would have written lyrics for more Beach Boys songs.
Oh, and as far as surprising endings to Beach Boys songs go, I think the female orgasm noises at the end of "All I Want To Do" has this one beat by a hair.
I love this song! The Beach Boys are awesome! I also like the way Ken Koenig covered it very very good! Check it out, just search: Ken Koenig- I'd Love Just Once To See You... I think if you like this song you will like his cover of it and probably some of his other songs too :)
I think the band could have saved themselves a bit of critical backlash if they had just skipped "Smiley Smile" altogether and just released this album in 1967 instead. I think it would have smoothed out the turning point a bit.
This song is very sweet... Then come the last three words and I think "WTF?!" Were this song a movie, it would be the most surprising twist ending.Anyways great song, one of the loveliest ways to ask for sex
Brian and his band have done this live a few times. Some of us Brianista's had joked he should sing this to Taylor Mills (the bands gorgeous vocalist and wife of Stixx's drummer Todd Sucherman
how is the ending such a surprise? this all screams "horny": "I get thinking I'm wasting the night away / I wouldn't mind if I could get with you right away / Oh honey don't know how long it's been / But this feeling's building up inside again"... and of course the pie reference
@wbdoak It's shocking because it's on a Beach Boys album, the same group who had released "God Only Knows" just a year earlier. It's as if Mickey Mouse were suddenly to start talking about doing Minnie.
I know. The ending is a shock - especially since the Beach Boys were America's fun & sun group.
It's brutally honest, and scary too - i.e. Brian minus self-control. Shocking, cool, sad, different -- the 'lover' he was lamenting here was nothing less than stability. This song, and the rest of the album, is full of under-meaning.
The song's meaning is twofold : About wanting that significant other by your side as any good romantic should. It's also about being more than a little "turned on" by that person too. So that frustration is sublimated into housework (which is positive and productive) so as not to think so much about it. Brian states those feelings in a coy, playful way rather than in the moronic cro-magnon way some rock 'n' rollers tend to do, which is actually pretty refreshing when you think about it.
The awkward cut at 1:03 is for sure intentional - we first see this kind of post-modern editing approach in the lo-fi cuts on 'Smiley' - for instance, the Wind Chimes version.
It was an ironic counterpoint to the 'perfect' sound he'd previously been going for, (less than a year ago) and a very subtle reminder that this was really the time of highest turmoil in his life.
This whole album is FULL of turmoil, many areas where you have to tease it out - it never hits you in the face.
I can never decide whether or not that akward edit at 1:03 where two whole beats are dropped is intentional or not. Perhaps Brian deliberately wanted to make this difficult to dance to, but who knows?
have tried to figure that out also. one view is the song was to be shortened but putting the edit there was a creative way of doing it. i.e., approaching as if the song was originally recorded that way. if that makes sense. would be interesting to hear the original take. i wouldn't surprised if that part is only one bar longer or something.
Wild Honey along with Surf's Up might be the two most underappreciated albums ever made. I do think Pet Sounds is the greatest album ever made, and quite possibly my favorite record. Still, Brian and the boys put out some FANTASTIC records post-sounds!
It is a great album and that is why it is so upsetting to see this album pair up with Smiley Smile because they are two great albums and it is insulting

@MattHatter Smiley Smile didn't do that bad critically, though I think we all know it was a commercial failure

@YearOfCam Oh get off it :P. It's a bit of fun, no more than that. If you want brutally, honest and scary... listen to 'til I die.

This song makes me think of my (ex?) girlfriend. The depression as a result of the parenthetical statement.

Brian says it's about his relationship with his father, I think?

Unfortunately, people were more interested in summer of love bands and other bands. However, this album did really good in the UK.
It's a really good album.
