When I was young this song meant so much to me...it gave me hope that I would be on my own one day, away from the pain that my stepfather gave me for so many years. Thank you Madonna, for singing such an important and special song. It's so beautiful, I will love it forever.
@MADONNANIAC You know what? it really is sad. I hope that my children will never understand this song the way I did. Let's make sure that doesn't happen...
everytime i would hear this i would think about how bad my father.. was,,the video clip as well shaterrs my heart as well.. the abuse.. the feeling to be abandoned. Madonna knows those things,, excellent lyrics
Besides her other songs like "Live to Tell" and "Power of Good-bye", this is a song that touches deep within me because it reminds me about my cruel stepfather and my struggles to be free of him. The line "I got away from you/ I never thought I would" is so true to me!
This song doesn't mean the same thing to all people. I am in an abusive relationship and that is what it means to me, cause one day I will get away from him. My father was an amazing man. <3
After coming home from afghanistan and losing one of my great friends there, i found it hard to get back into the ''real'' life again.. and as corny as it sounds listening to madonna's songs ( mainly this one ) made me settle down
@MultiGakka No i wouldn't, As im Happily married and have 2 children , so if your implying that im a fag you need to rethink your little comment, Dont say anything to me on here that you wouldnt in real life kiddo
Madonna may be the Queen of pop but she has tackled a lot of issues in her songs the same way as artists such as Tracy Chapman, Suzanne Vega and Michelle Shocked have. Respect to all you ladies.
One thing Madonna has done that few artists (musical or otherwise) has been able to do is use religious iconography in a personal, poignant way that is also relatable and meaningful. I don't think the majority of artists understand that splashing crosses over themselves or their work doesn't make them edgy. The reason Madonna's use of religious icons was so edgy was because they had a message that was difficult for people to hear. Very little of what she has done was purely for shock value.
@EvilBarbieSpawn why? would it be better if she drawns evil barbies in the video? Everyone would believe in it better and accept it faster cuz they feel it their heart the temptation which is sweeter... but I tell you something even the evil knows/believes in God. :D
Every time I hear this song, or especially watch the video, I feel a tear welling up inside. This is a BEAUTIFUL, HEARTFELT song...although, a bit depressing, I think we can all find somewhere to relate here.
my father was an alcoholic/abusive bastard of a father --- later on died of dementia/parkinson's but I FORGAVE him...this was one of my favorite Madonna songs that reminded of him.
@ojmccaf63 I know we have to declare our sexuality.. cuz everyone thinks if you listen to a female singer they think we're homos. However everyone has experience... some has a little some just lives with it. Btw no one is curious that you're homo or not cuz I don't know what is your real expression your forgivness or your sexual orientation. It's a song, not a sex conversation.
@ojmccaf63 And you shouldn't have stated that he was an alcoholic abusive bastard of a father if you have forgiven him which I doubt... You need Madonna to remind of him? I know you're not happy.
Una vida, un disparo (es que yo no soy como la otra que va a un colegio de clase A y a otro de clase B, a un insituto de clase A y otro de clase B y a una facultad de clase A y otra de clase B).
The lyrics are wonderful, and to me it's a shame Madonna has stopped writing songs as personal as this. "Maybe someday, when i look back i'll be able to say, 'you didn't mean to be cruel, somebody hurt you too." That is something that I will try to live with and balance for the rest of my life. Sometimes I get the balance right, but the scale will always be shifting. I know what my father had to live through as a child, I just hope he would've worked harder not to repeat the mistake.
Madonna became a success when gaga, britney, aguilera, kate perry, k$sha and etc were just babies (or hadn't even been born)...And she has been a success until now...She stops when she decides to. I just want to see any of those pop singers of the moment just become 51, 52, 53 years old and still go on a tour with thousands of people singing their new and old songs...When that happens, then madonna's over...For now...she is the queen...
i remember when 1st heard the LP like a prayer on it release and the feelings it cast up especialy this song being a massiva madonna fan at the time, now 2 decades on still casts same feelings
Just the lyrics alone, "Maybe someday, when i look back i'll be able to say, 'you didn't mean to be cruel, somebody hurt you too." has helped put alot of things in perspective for me and helped me understand some of the pain from my childhood.
I am not at all trying to condone abusers' behavior, but about 95% of them have come from abuse themselves. That's why talking about it and bringing it to public attention is important. It's a terrifying cycle that will just keep repeating itself w/ohelp
My mother was an abusive monster this song made me realize that the pain I was feeling was not solely my own and there were others who felt the way I did. This song really helped me to over come years of abuse. Thank you Madonna
@xreddragonx Yes, mothers beat up,scream and make you feel worthless as well. Boys, girls don't let yourself be a victim, you control your own life after the horrible period. All will be well, just keep fighting for a good life.
Just read the book by her brother Christopher Ciccone, these word mean a lot to Madonna and her brother about her mothers death when they were both young, and it also reflects on the relationship she also had with Sean Penn, so it is a strong song and can't help but cry every time i hear it, I never had a brilliant relationship with my dad, and the catholic religion was a part of my family, so this means a lot.
This was the last Album I ever bought of hers.As I grew up so did the innocense of her songs for me.If you are Male and like Madonna people think you are gay.So as a straight guy songs like these became a guilty pleasure. And thats probably why I dont buy her music any more sad really.
This video is incredibly beautiful, powerful, sad and so well done to tell the story of Madonna's song....Thanks for uploading it, its a work of art. I remember back when artist used to make great visual works of art for their music.
"maybe someday, i can look back on the tears and the pain. you never meant to be cruel. somebody hurt you too." these words inspired me to be more patient with my dad, who yelled frequently and lost his temper easily. i thought, maybe he acts that way because he had pain in his life too that never healed. as i got older, i started to understand better the bitterness you feel at lost opportunities, broken hearts, betrayals by people you thought were your friends. pain changes you.
@keleziz76 finally someone speaks my mind! :PPPP But on the other hand we had pain but we had to let it go... but you still have to let the pain go away...
Amazing - loved this whole era of music from madonna - I would Madonna to take a new direction on her next album - similar to ray of light and blow us away with something unexpected.
this song is really truly amazing! You can tell A LOT of thought went into making it, the music, the lyrics and the beautiful video that goes with it. Amazing stuff!
My father raped me when I was less than 10. I wish the time will come soon I can forgive him... "you never wanted to hurt me" I think it's so. I think something wrong happened with him before he did that. He cannot be so evil...a human cannot be so evil by himself.
I can relate to a lot of the emotions in this video.... experiencing the death of a parent at a young age.... my dad did what he thought was best for me and my siblings at the time.... he did what he could..... I LOVE MY FATHER..... I will always be daddy's little girl
@MDkid1 Surely you don't think songs and movies (say, something with Shirley McClaine) EVER are calculating enough to set out to make someone cry? I've never HEARD of such a thing. Oh, and I'm also the King of Europe... :-)
Her best song and video,it moved me so much when I first heard it.I remember my parents making fun of me,because I used to sing this so loud at night, lol.
I wasnt abused by my father, but was by my boyfriend. This song was out at the time of the breakup. To this day it still makes me strong and sad at the same time.
It wasn't enough for you to send me to school, with bruises shaped like your favorite weapon, the belt. Everyone looked at me, and then they treated me differently.
I was beaten by my step monster (Father) who was an alocholic who "didn't drink" any longer, but surely kept the personality. He LOVED showing us kids "who was BOSS". As a kid I never thought about growing up and getting out, I was to busy just surviving. Glad I did, but the scars still remain though I am in my 50s. GLAD he finally died.
@kayteDianeKD you confirmed what I already thought. My dad was only there for the massive abuse. nothing else. I tried to get along with him later, it started to kill me.
@kayteDianeKD you confirmed what I already thought. My dad was only there for the massive abuse. nothing else. I tried to get along with him later, it started to kill me. and of course my mother was such a tiny cowardly person, she only stood up to him once, when he was kicking me while I was down.
MADDONA i NEVER HAD A MOM I WAS KICKED R SHOVED OUT THE HOUSE AT 18 ,,,,CUS i WAS GAY ,,,MY MOM IS 80 NOW AND i'M 48 WE DON'T TALK TO THIS DAY ,,,i NEVER HAD A MOTHER TO LOVE ME...i'M SORRY U LOST UR MOM
I've had the image of the girl being shaken by her father since I saw this as a child. It is a remarkable video- now it makes sense that I find it was directed by Fincher.
We need more songs like this now....as we speak, my father is calling me (He's bi-polar/schizophrenic) to tell me how utterly useless and ignorant I am. I used to excuse his behavior cause of his sickness, but my husband, bless him, has shown me I don't need to it anymore....I do love my dad, very much, but, he can't hurt me anymore. Sorry to get all deep, but there are reasons for songs like this....
I read your post and I got a bit teary-eyed. My father died in 2000 of alcoholism ... he hurt me a lot. A think about him a lot when I watch this clip. God bless. Dylan
such an amazing video and song. This video, along with "Bad Girl", are two of her best videos she has ever done. Both artistic and beautiful. Too bad they both were left off the Celebration dvd and cd.
@Spinny78 i relate im 31 and i came out at 21.my dad is well off and wasnt there finanially or phisc.i lived in shelters w my mom and sister while he was remarried in a two story house !but its ok im gay and this song totally is for him.stay strong dads are overrated.if i become one ill be way better.god bless.leo
@76special "what doesnt kill u makes u stronger.": what doesn't kill you can still shatter you. what doesn't kill you can lose your arm, or your mind...
@Spinny78 u should watch the secne in the jack nicholson movie - as good as it gets - with the main gay character speaking about his last day with his father after coming out - very true to life
@Spinny78 what a great song. they just dont make them like this anymore. madonna is a ledgend, hope all is well with you and life is going good for you. keep smiling
@Spinny78 I understand what you mean. I'll soon be 50 and the pain is still there, It does not go away. It's like new shoes. You just get used to it. My brothers were so full of hate because they didn't want a fag for a brother.
@sophiapuppy it's not your fault cuz you are gay.... it's your father and your brothers' fault... The real men's fault cuz you opened yourself and you bring shame on them... for some reasons...
@Spinny78 I don't know how the relationship with your father is now (I'm 40 and my father will never accept that I'm gay unfortunately), just know that you control your life and continue loving yourself no matter what! Remember who you are!
@MultiGakka thank you. the great part of this whole thing is that i have learned to understand his failures and insecurities. that makes me feel so much more alive!
It's not that the father portrayed in the video is evil or useless or a monster...it is that she felt as a child unloved by him, but when she got older, she realized he did the best he could with all he knew, because when he was a child himself, somebody hurt him too, he didn't mean to be cruel. Just lost my father, this means the world to me, this video. He was not a monster, but he did the best he could do, I'm ever thankful, RIP daddy.
This is definitely one of Madonna's best and deepest songs. The video is amazing as well.

@MDkid1 Surely you don't think songs and movies (say, something with Shirley McClaine) EVER are calculating enough to set out to make someone cry? I've never HEARD of such a thing. Oh, and I'm also the King of Europe... :-)

@shmuli9 well Your Majesty...I think it does....so take that :P ;)

I've had the image of the girl being shaken by her father since I saw this as a child. It is a remarkable video- now it makes sense that I find it was directed by Fincher.

Most of the Madonna songs from this period were good, well in fact most of
the songs from the 80's through to 2001 were good.

@sulfete

@Spinny78 u should watch the secne in the jack nicholson movie - as good as it gets - with the main gay character speaking about his last day with his father after coming out - very true to life

@Spinny78 I understand what you mean. I'll soon be 50 and the pain is still there, It does not go away. It's like new shoes. You just get used to it. My brothers were so full of hate because they didn't want a fag for a brother.
We, my friend, are survivors.
sophiapuppy 1 year ago
@sophiapuppy it's not your fault cuz you are gay.... it's your father and your brothers' fault... The real men's fault cuz you opened yourself and you bring shame on them... for some reasons...
MultiGakka 4 months ago
@Spinny78 I don't know how the relationship with your father is now (I'm 40 and my father will never accept that I'm gay unfortunately), just know that you control your life and continue loving yourself no matter what! Remember who you are!
pqrs95 11 months ago 6
@pqrs95 you can't force him to accept you cuz no one is "perfect like him"...

Madonna could be a bitch at times like gaga, but the latter has never given me a shiver with her songs like this one. Madonna you are great.
azulturquesa2000 1 year ago
It's not that the father portrayed in the video is evil or useless or a monster...it is that she felt as a child unloved by him, but when she got older, she realized he did the best he could with all he knew, because when he was a child himself, somebody hurt him too, he didn't mean to be cruel. Just lost my father, this means the world to me, this video. He was not a monster, but he did the best he could do, I'm ever thankful, RIP daddy.
