The Russian and Ukrainian languages do not incorporate definite ("the") or indefinite ("a, an") articles, so they never called it "the Ukraine". Generally, when they are referring to the country, it's in a capacity of в Украине (Ukr. or Russian: "in Ukraine").
From another perspective: If a proper noun refers to a group of islands or mountains, or to the political setup of a country, a definite article should precede it.
People with English as a second language say "in THE Ukraine." To us with English as a first language, it sounds wrong, and it gives away immediately that English is your second language. We wonder why you insist on saying "In the Ukraine."
@paranormalstar I don't know where to write this, but this is stupid. I was born in Ukraine, Crimea. Everybody I know owned a washing-machine. May be back in 1991 when my country broke away from Russia people did not have a washing-machine. When my mother had me she was 18 and even then she had one. Indeed I have seen her wash clothes this way but only delicates and wool because the old washer we had was sort of crappy.
oh nooooooooooo don't twist and wring it makes your seams go crooked!

Why do you say "In Ukraine" why do you not say"In THE Ukraine". Would it be like saying In The America , instead of In America ?
In Ukrain still does not sound right.
