dont tell me this is the way they teach division in school/..3 into 72? 3s into 7 goes 2 times with 1 over ,carry it over to the 2 which makes 12 and 4 goes into 12...answer 24....go back to the 3 rs.reading writing rithmetic. (arithmetic ).
Whenever I ask HS students who are having trouble with numbers to explain to me how their "mental math looks on paper," they scribble little tricks like this. Is it the concept or the implementation that gives them less time to finish their work? At least examples of the mentioned "clustering" system are easy to explain; I have yet to meet a student who can explain why the "lattice" multiplication works in a way that doesn't involve making the standard method look better.
Thank you, that was the most helpful video I have seen so far, I "get it" now, and hopefully can pass this on to my 11 year old son who is struggling.
For adults it's easier 114/6=120/6 -6/6 =20-1=19
