God, I wish we just had more videos like this of Glenn in the editing room ... Watching this clip, I wonder why Glenn never complained about the "studio-audience"; I mean, what if the mixer is a jerk, or if one of the editing people has his own opinions about how things should be played. In this clip, for example, people are talking while Gould is trying to listen to playback. Didn't these things bother him, too?
The sound guy said in regards to Italian Concerto, 'Boy every kid in the world played this thing.' Is he being sarcastic? Or am I just a crap pianist? :/
I think the piano sounds just fine. Of course the outcome is of less quality than present-day recordings but nevertheless Mr. Gould does a great job on a reasonably good piano, there is nothing seriously wrong with that machine.
which vid is it when someone says: "watch your head on the mic?" and gould and the other person (sorry cant recall his name) are listening to his recording?
This is a trip! I've never seen this before, but I have the movie "Thirty-two Short Films About Glenn Gould" and though they used a different piece of music in the film, this footage (with the recording engineers, etc) is apparently the basis for the scene in the film entitled "Passion according to Gould".
If Bach heard his music played by Gould, he would have been proud. I think the humming is awesome (I do it too) and anyone who thinks otherwise should be killed.
Why is humming so great? Does it add to the music? No it doesn't. It's like exaggerated facial gestures and hands waving through the air. It is about the music not the person playing it. And if I don't like humming, then who are you to tell me that I have to like it?
The humming allows him to express himself. The hands and faces likewise. How many pianists have sat stock still and released beautiful music on the world?
I feel it does add to the music, just like reverb. from the piano, not entirely necessary but it adds to the coziness surrounding the pieces he plays.
Would you prefer a computer to play everything perfectly?
I understand where you're coming from, but I guess people mustr differ. If you learn to like it, you will love the music all the more.
The singing allows a performer to understand the phrasing better, and play it according to the voices and melodies, rather than playing bach as though it was written vertically (Chord by Chord). A mistake that is often made.
ok ive just realised i posted on the wrong video, in another of the "glenn gould moments" he is trying out a piano and he plays bars from 2 pieces, one being the 3rd movement, the other being the one i dont know. my mistake
The exchange with the taxi driver is far too comical. lol
"Boy, every kid in the world played this thing...." How odd the sound engineer could be in the presence of GG and make such a flippant remark about the piece he was playing.
Thank you Zaby2006. I heard some people really hate to see or hear GG play piano, but to me, it sounds unique, different from other pianist..inspiring too. I love his music, can't get enough of them...simply amazing!
It's funny that just the other day I heard it on the news that some convinient store owner took the advice from police officers to play classical music loud inside outside of the store to keep the loiterers away from the store front...How sad...I bet he didn't play GG's music...
I know, I kind of wish he played GG though for those people's sake - it might transformed their lives as it did to me..I have always listened to classical music (on radio) and over the years bought a few CDs and one of GG's recording of Bach was one of them...but one day when I looked thru my CDs and saw it again, I played the CD and something got into me and I was hooked on his music..it was a strangest thing that's ever happened to me...it was as if his music were specaking to me...cont'd
I never bother or have time to learn about composers and their music, but now I am into all of them especially Bach..I even picked up Piano after I quit playing 25 years ago...anyways, I love Glenn and probably have all the things you can find about him...books, DVDs, Cds, the whole bit..LOL..crazy huh? I wonder if there's fan club website for GG?
P.S. I share the youtube account with my children..as you can see from the favorites..LOL!

I can't imagine Bach doing the humming and conducting.
I think Bach is amused from heaven at the fuss made over his works.

Abysmal sound quality, sadly. The piano sounds awful, like a bad upright. No wonder they had to get the tuner in...

Poor Gould. That producer was a total idiot.
helenagothicangel13 2 years ago
This conversation with the cabbie must have been extremely difficult for Gould, yet to his credit, he remained polite.

yeah... odd though, you wouldnt think they would have the camera in the cab like that.. i suspect its kindof a joke?

The box office is getting feed up, still they have time to critizize Gould for being so animated during his performance.

The hand movements, help with tempo stability, you know a fuller explanation of tempo by visual.
username1p 2 years ago 2
i wouldnt say it adds to the music, but it is just how he is expressing himself. If he held it in it would be un-natural

I'm not sure if it's just me, but I kinda like the 'humming'. Plus it let's you know it's an 'authentic' Gould recording. ;)

I don't know, but it's just more enjoyable hearing him hum. Makes it seem less 'formal' when you hear a recording of his playing.
