The GTX 580 mostly beats the 5970 in extreme tessellation and performance. 2 GTX 580s HUMILIATE 2 5970s in crossfire in extreme tessellation. And I highly doubt Radeon's 6970 will beat the gtx 580 in tesellation and overall performance, since Nvidia is the kind of the new tessellation technology and of course they have the fastest single GPU. RAdeon needs better drivers and better graphics cards for tesellation ;))

That isn't true... i have a 24" Samsung LCD I run at 1920x1200 and an IBM 15" CRT I run at 1024@768 and they run fine in extended desktop with my Sapphire ATi Radeon 4850 512MB

From what I read the GTX 295 is physically deep, meaning that a 4 slot motherboard can hold only two GTX 295 cards. A four slot motherboard could hold 4 5870 cards. Three 5870 cards is more than enough to take on the 2 GTX 295 cards. That'll last you till direct x12 and outdates all the cards out there like direct X 9= did.
@halfpol Stupid question but how do you overclock ati video cards? i know there is a tool for nvidia cards but i don't know if theres one similar for ati. i run on an nvidia gts 250 and am about to buy the ati 5870.

The HD5870 seems to perform on the same level as the GTX295. For a new generation of video card, this is about where you want it to perform. Double the speed of the top/near top of the line. Since the GTX295 is a pair of GTX275, that puts it right where it should be.
I also can't wait for the Fermi Video cards. They will drop these prices like a rock. However, Fermi isn't competing with this card. Its competing with the HD6xxx now.
and 3dmark app's are and have always been tilted in the favor of nvidia, since the way nvidia archetecture works better for gpgpu functions and open gl, duh of course your going to see better results with nvidia. but you dont buy a card to run bench's, you buy a card to play games, real world tests are so much different.
notice though, that the drivers being used are still imature, for the ati card i mean. the cards work differently anyway, despite the fact that one is a dual gpu. its not sane to crossreference diff generations of cards, wait till nvidias fermi chips (gt300 series) come out, then compare them to this. plus there is a 5970 that is only slightly more expensive than a gtx295 that kicks ass.

Physx may not be used in games very often, but Physx processor isn't only set up for specifically it. It processes physics of all types. It doesn't pertain to any specific engine. Certain engines like Physx it is designed for, but others like Geomod2.0 I got way better frame rates on my 8800gtx then with my HD 5750.
@Wakkajakka The onboard Physx processor is basically a gts250, and it will only accelerate Physx based games and only if it allows hardware physx. It wont work in games that don't use hardware physx, there is no other way around it. Geomod 2.0 is purely cpu based for its physics and may run better on the 8800gtx than the Ati card simply because it was optimized for Nvidia cards or its a "the way its meant to be played" title. And Physx is dead, Nvidia is moving on to OpenCL.

I've been buyign Nvidia for my last three builds, but I'm goign with ATI this time. Lower power cunsumption and Directx 11. given the benchmarks results I've been seeing here and elsewhere. And thsoe ATI drivers hadn;t had time to amture by then. If you did that test again nw, you'd see a godo increase on teh ATI side. Nvidia too, likely, but all i saw of the initial 5xxx drivers is that they were complete shit.
But now that I'm back on the ATI train, I won;t get drivers every 2 weeks :(

I wouldn't personally say it owned it. The 295 has an extra 768 MB of memory to work with. I suppose that is why at higher resolutions the nvidia scores higher. I would recon if your running your games at 1080p on a monitor under 30" you wouldn't see a dramatic difference between the two.
gotta remember ati have early drivers for these cards at the momment the 295 is a year old ? and they probly have got the most performance they can get out their drivers with the 295 so im sure the 5870 will become alot better soon

HD 5870 is better, it has a less power comsumption, more cheaper than GTX 295 and it own DirectX 11. But GTX295 has Physics and CUDA, driver update frequently. But I prefer ATI driver and the less comsumption, low-cost comparated to GTX295 and DirectX 11 makes HD 5870 a better choice.

Gtx 295 is 2x gtx 285 with lower clock gpu and memory,less ram per GPU and 448 bit memory interface but it has the same amount of SPs,TUs and ROPs as gtx 285

nvidia will never be in my good system's the failure rate is just horrific. Well I didn't change my mind yet but I'm still thinking about it. I was planning on selling my GTX 295 for 200 ( I have a potential buyer) and buying this card for only 150 (assuming it costs 350). I'm comparing the two cards. I like eye-candy and I've heard (yes through comments) that this ATI card has superior Image Quality to the 295. Researching that when I get time. Yea I'm pretty much done with this conversation though.

I wouldn't personally say it owned it. The 295 has an extra 768 MB of memory to work with. I suppose that is why at higher resolutions the nvidia scores higher. I would recon if your running your games at 1080p on a monitor under 30" you wouldn't see a dramatic difference between the two.

I am not a fanboy I just got best performance for the money as far as I can tell the 5870 wins for best performance for the money. Seriously 295 costs 500 is the cheapest while 5870 goes for 389.. Can't wait to buy a xfire mobo and xfire this.

HD 5870 is better, it has a less power comsumption, more cheaper than GTX 295 and it own DirectX 11. But GTX295 has Physics and CUDA, driver update frequently. But I prefer ATI driver and the less comsumption, low-cost comparated to GTX295 and DirectX 11 makes HD 5870 a better choice.

gtx295 is a dual gpu card.
and when you take 2 of them (so you have 4gpus) the performance will suck. thats not efficiency.
and also you will get very much microlags.
2 gtx295 are just 30% faster then 1.
and 2 hd5870 perform over 50% faster then 1.

a gtx 275 is 16% faster than a gtx260 so yes
2*gtx275 should be faster than a gtx295

Gtx 295 is 2x gtx 285 with lower clock gpu and memory,less ram per GPU and 448 bit memory interface but it has the same amount of SPs,TUs and ROPs as gtx 285

the shader,chip and ram clock of the gtx295 and gtx260 is the same.(1.242/576/999)
the ram size is the same(896mb per gpu), the memory interface (448bit), the amount of rops(28 per gpu)
only TMUs/TAUs and shader are identical with the gtx280/285. (80/80/240 per gpu)
so 6 things are identical with the gtx260 and only 3 things with the gtx285.
thats definitly more equal to an gtx260.
only the gtx295 mars is made by 2 full-fledged gtx285 but it costs 1000€ and is limited by 1000.

Well I didn't change my mind yet but I'm still thinking about it. I was planning on selling my GTX 295 for 200 ( I have a potential buyer) and buying this card for only 150 (assuming it costs 350). I'm comparing the two cards. I like eye-candy and I've heard (yes through comments) that this ATI card has superior Image Quality to the 295. Researching that when I get time. Yea I'm pretty much done with this conversation though.

The Gtx 295 is barely better than the 5870. But the 5870 runs cooler with lower fan speeds than the Gtx 295. And the gtx 295 has more memory.
