Well, I agree with you - absolute rubbish contraption! However, I know your pin setter is 100 times better than this, so Vollmer must be way out in front in the technology field of bowling. I LOVE bowling at your establishment - Moonee Beach Kegel - in Australia - I'd HATE to bowl at the place that uses the Funk pin setter - a bowler would be waiting for a year before they got their turn to bowl! Geez!
This is a very bad example of a string pinsetter in action. I have been using Vollmer string pinsetters for over 8 years now and this has never happened to this extend. As a matter of fact, the Vollmer string pinsetters are much faster as AMF or Brunswick and nowhere as noisy as shown in this clip.
Here is also a tangled 9 pin setter, but not doing the untangle so brutal like this, and in 99.9 percent it can untangle itself. But it can happen, that one of the pins slides in the ball tunnel, and the ball rolls on it, and then it should free manually climbing behind the pins :) But more often problem, that one (or two or three) pin(s) fall after setting up, and then the machine resets again.
I assume that bowling alley owners who purchases and installs string pinsetters in their alleys just cares about the money and profiting for themselves. Rather than bowling itself. You know how people these days are materialistic.
Between 0:10 - 0:31 the controller on this thing is like; damnit, damnit, damnit, DAMNIT!...wow OMG really?...HOLY SHIT! JUST COME UNTANGLED!!... jeeze... finally..

That's AWESOME! Yeah, giving the pins those multiple reset pulls works well - see, you need the long strings to get real pin action, but it also makes them tangled - this mechanism clearly solves that problem - bravo. I want one now.
I have a question. Is free fall bowling "traditional?", or an "obsolete invention?">like James T. Kirk's old Star Trek communicator? Free fall bowling has always been played since the day bowling was first invented in ancient Egypt thousands of years ago. And the strings may hinder the pins' natural action. I was playing a coined-up mini-bowlingat a place called Good Times in Somerville, MA. And the strings on the pins got tangled so many times. It was a problem.
i could understand this idea if its a MUCH cheaper alternative and less maintenance compared to a regular one, for someones basement, etc. I wonder how different the pin action is.
Interesting video. I wonder if it would be simpler if the machine just pulled up 5 pins at a time, then all 10 at the same time. In this day and age of hi-tech stuff, you would think that would be possible. just my 0.02c.
it takes 2 long for the pins two set themselves up... in that time i could run down the lane move them out of the way and throw another ball... but still better then nothing
@TheOnehandedwonder Thank you. As an inventor, I know when to throw in the towel on something that doesn't work very good. This should never have made it beyond first prototype. To invent, you first must find everything that DOESN'T work, then see what's left.
Seems to me like the string could be an issue in the pin action. I've seen this sort of setter in a shorter style "bowling" game at a local arcade and it seemed to work well enough but if it took that long every time that would be annoying.
they do interfere with it, the pins are slightly more stable and can be knocked and stay up with a lot more force than your regular pins. I hate these pins.
I think it's awesome how you used the word "their" incorrectly twice in one sentence in place of "they're" and "there." In regard to the situation, it would still make a very noticeable difference because the strings, even when loose, could get tangled and prevent or create extra pin action in contrast to pins without strings.
they got some of those in canada . i played them quite bit years ago. never saw that happen ever. As a matter of fact they screw up less than mechanical machines . they are very low matinance but averages are lower for the bowlers . the strings give the pins more stability
I can't imagine having a whole 24 lane bowling alley with these pieces of shit. I have seen them before in hotel suite's. But I don't think you could have a real league house with this junk.
this is the worst string setter ive seen for ages usually they just pull the pins up so much the tangle completely gives out and the pins can reset and also they dont make that irritating ticking noise!

Can't be used for USBC. String pinsetters can't spot pins slightly out of range as they'll just pull them up and respot in the original spot.

A Brunswick GSX would have had that cleared in 10 seconds, ready for Ball Two!!
The person would have finish his frame before that thing got untangled!
EdmDude 3 years ago
Allowing, say, three seconds for any late-falling pins, it took 25 seconds (0:09 to 0:34) for the machine to get the 10-pin ready for play.
I guess it's almost ready by the time the player gets the ball back, but it's excruciating to watch and hear. I'm not sure I'd want it in my league.
Cool video, though.
