This video is doesnt determine wether DX or GL is better than the other unless if both are being stressed at full quality and performance (and to test it at full performance and quality is: Tools>> Options. Uncheck Compress if it is checked. Use 32-bit Colors, have Antialiasing at high as well as Anisotropic filtering, turn the Terain quality switch as high as possible). Either way, Direct X 9 is used in Google Earth 6 even tho DX 11 is the newest version. Direct X 12 is soon to come out tho...
The graphics and the speed of OpenGL an Direct3D is equal! The differences are in the API. OpenGL has an ugly API but runs on everything. Direct3D runs only on PC, XBox and XBox360.
The API is just as good as DX's, it's all a question of taste.
As of the speed, unbiaised graphic tests are very hard to make because it all really depends on your drivers. Intel's drivers for instance haven't touched it's openGL support since 2004 or something, and I can't really tell for ATI, but I believe their own drivers also favorises DX (through there are fan made drivers now).
But it's all aboutt the way it's implemented, not the API that does the difference.
Open GL traditionally runs apps at higher frame rates compared to Direct X....
Though, Direct X has the highest forms of functionality for apps, and dispays real - time calculated lighting and texture buffering at levels way beyond any form of Open GL App...
This is why Open GL works on almost any computer port becuase applications built off this Extension are universally open to the basic graphics library catelogs used by your graphics cards and proccessors.
@ElliahAlsi If you're running OpenGL on Windows (especially Windows Vista/7) it is really slow. That is because of the really bad implementation of OpenGL from Microsoft though. If you're running OpenGL on Linux/OSX/BSD/some other OS that uses OpenGL natively it is about as fast (if not even faster) as DirectX.
@ElliahAlsi Might depend on video card and openGL support. ATI seems to be falling behind in this area, which is why I switched to Nvidia. I do CG so openGL is very important.
Oh, i got Openglide from a old graphics card called 3dfx that got bought by nvidia, Sorry i dont know how to make the video in split-screen whit camtasia :P
@Riboshom It's Open Graphics Library though you were correct, Glide is something completely different: it's an API developed for the Voodoo Graphics cards.
Open GL is so much better! Just because there isn't as much support directx is suppose to be better? Look at Nvidia's website more and more developers are switching to Open GL!

@zedrexvsyrex
Graphics cards also are applied. To have everything stressed at its fullest, you need a good graphics card thats able to represent it.

opengl is better, but depends the videocard, some video cards are to weak for opengl but works fine with directx

GL mode is better than directX.

Update...
Direct X uses specialized extensions that take full advantage of unique graphics cards and proccessors that are able to support higher extensions.
This is why Direct X has so many versions. The Extesions keep building, therefore the Hardware gets more complicated and advanced.
Open GL is built from basic up... Direct X is all unique code.
There is no better of the two... You either go one way, or the other...
0koollio 1 year ago
@0koollio This is tru, however you must inference that Direct X most likely has more experience. Thus it has the ability to be better

Open GL is best run on NVIDIA hardware... Direct X is best run on AMD-ATI hardware...
Anything that comes from any other company besides Nvidia and AMD, are completely redundant....
Open GL opens files one way... Direct X Opens files a different way...
Intel is basic hardware that overstresses when faced with heavy tasks...
AMD and Nvidia should take all the credit for their hard work on insanse quantum Formulas.
AMD and Nvidia are the future of the world.

OpenGL....the way forward....think they should make PC games with an OpenGL options rather than depending on DirectX.

why does when i open google earth with opengl mode it is slow

@ElliahAlsi im not sure, maybe it just uses to much of power on opengl

@ElliahAlsi Upgrade your graphics driver. Also, get yourself an AMD or nvidia card.

@ElliahAlsi It's because Windows don't have native OpenGL, For run OpenGL, Windows needs emulate OpenGL with DirectX...
vcspy 1 year ago
@ElliahAlsi because u use windows and it doesn't have openGL it's just emulated by directX, and this emulation needs powerful hardware!

@ElliahAlsi Intel doesn't support OpenGL past version 1.1. If you have an intel graphics card that's the problem.

@nkpawn it is called "Open Graphics Library" or OpenGL for short. -.-
;)

I hardly see the difference...
You should have made this video split-screen...
And by the way, OpenGL stands for Open GraphicLayer.
Don't know how did you come with Open GLide. ;)

Actually OpenGL stands for Open Graphics Library, and the Open in it means open standards, as opposed to DirectX which is closed standard.

so opengl is best? or directX
