Hasan-I-Sabbah was a brave man in my opinion. He was in a country where Shia 12'ism and Sunnis were dominant still he wanted to spread his version of Islam (ismailism).

The term Hashshashin was meant to discriminate the Ismaili's. The Ismaili's that were captured by the sunni's and twelver's were often severely punished, being tortured. The reason why Hasan-I-Sabbah ordered his men to keep hashish in their mouth's was incase they were captured. Had they been captured they would be tortured.
