When the films were made Russell was still on smack, crack and heroin, I think that played a huge part in his extreme compassion towards James and other people in the series. That and his already compassionate nature
in the book russell said that james said to him something like that it was almost rude for him to do this to him ; for all he knows he could of murdered someone.
I truly hope that when Russel became something and famous, that maybe he tried looking for James to help him out. This makes me so sad..James seems so sweet and yet so sad and dead inside(obviously because he's homeless)...It kinda makes me want to cry...
You guys view it so simply. to everyone saying that he did all this for his personal gain, how he was on drugs, and how this is disturbing...thats because hes a saint, man! he helped james, cleaned him up, and wasn't scared to help which mind you, you definatly would. But he cleaned james with his bare hands, it was like Jesus when he washed the feet of...i believe a homeless person. If anything, Hes my role model dammit
@NewIllusionist Agreed. What could've just been another day begging/panhandling for James was, instead, transformed into a in-depth documentary of a 'Life in the day of...'. Truth is that James is homeless and by applying scrutiny and comparison, of the varying lifestyles, Russell begins a commentary and journey which isn't exploitative but investigative. Regardless of the drugs, this is an illuminating peregrinate and worthy, in the very least, of the omittance of condescention.
@seraphimra not really when you consider this is a video of two of addicts, someone should have been looking after them not putting them infront of a camera
@chors2341 I disagree, to a certain extent. It is up to each one of us to realize the self-deceptions which we accept and allow ourselves to exist as. Perhaps it was this very scenario, coupled with many other subjective transformations, which allowed Russell to 'cleanse the doors of perception', and begin upon the path to wellness. We can speculate many could've and should'ves. Important for you to know~ They are people with addictions, not addicts. There is a subtle, yet potent differentiation
@seraphimra I wasn't implying they are anything less than people by calling them addicts, which by the way 'people with addictions,' you've defined addicts. i think even Russel himself admitted he was off the rails at this point and I think it shows in the film. My point is someone should have been looking out for these two vunerable people rather than making a show reguardless of wheher they wanted to participate or not, thankfully one pulled throught hopefully the other did

@chors2341 Decency and a moralistic standard of decorum from a television broadcast? Truely, this is the most rare of phenomenas. Addicts summarizes and implies that their whole being can be encompassed by this terminology, whereas people with addictions, dissipates the dehuminization that is associated with labels and judgements. However, I do agree that we should all assist and support each other to live more holistic lives, yet how would you attempt to legislate such behavior, w/o being 1984
by people feeling sorry for the man and complaining about exploitation russell has achieved his purpose for this episode, which is to create empathy from the viewers towards homeless people and therefore make the public realise that the homeless need help
I like russell alot. When i read about this in his book i shrugged it off as a very "russell" thing to do .But now i'm watching it happen i feel such sympathy for poor james. This is incredibly uncomfortable viewing, kind of like russell has teased james with the luxuries of his life only to take advantage of him for entertainment. I realise russell was on drugs at the time but in my mind that doesnt erase the fact that a vulnerable human being was made to feel less human for "entertainment".
@ALongDecember100 he got a week of luxury... thats good by itself, he also got paids 500 quid. And in experiencing the luxury he realised what he was missing and it could have been a huge factor in helping him get on the straight and narrow... so it was just entertainment/viewers that benefitted.
I feel sorry for people who think Russell is purposely exploiting James, he's trying to be nice as well as trying to understand more about James, let a bit of happiness in
I see a lot of comments about exploitation. I've never been a big fan of Russell Brand's work, but honestly this episode (nay, this whole series) looks like it was some sort of catharsis or an attempt to get clean. It's very deeply personal (look at Dadfight), and a quote from the last part really stuck out to me where he was talking about getting as close to clean as he can by helping James get clean.
Well, you have to look at it from the socio-economical viewpoint. The entire point of this show was to put things that society sees as normal in people's face. Why are these people homeless? We could help these people, really, we could, if we could take someone in like this. Sure, the show was done in the spirit of drug-addled idea, and because its 'sheer insanity.' But he did give this man 500 pounds for this. And felt guilty. Russell is a staunch supporter of Socialism, mind you.
I feel personally Russell was just trying to brush off the uncomfortable vibe, and acting humerous in quite a heart felt way. I love the way he dealt with this, actually.
That's just me though, some people hate Russell and all he stands for.
I don't think Russell should be accused for doing this for his own benefit.
Despite drugs, what ever side effect there may be. The way he's acting, he hasn't lost it at all. He knows what he's doing, and I doubt many people would go this far to seek more for their own benefit. The only thing he could possibly be accused for is being a bit patronising towards James, as it does look a tad uncomfortable at certain points.
Going to leave a second comment as I've run outta space. x)
everyones saying about how james must have felt wierd about being washed by russell etc but i think he must have liked it. imagine just being on teh streets then someone taking you in (even if it was under these circumstances) and taking care of you abit and giving you attention. it must have been nice..... especially as it was from russell brand looool
This whole episode consisted basically of nothing more than Russell Brand bathing a homeless man. I'm a fan of the rest of the series, but this just seems a little odd?!
Thank you, and your most gracious self, I had thought it was Morrisey not because of the Russell connection , but because he sounded so much like Morrisey, May all the benign blessings of Brahma come your way , Neti !!!
