When people think of the Queen of the Night, they immediately think of "Der Holle Rache". Don't forget "O Zittre Nicht". It is beautiful and challenging in it's own right.
I don't want to start pandemonium here but I must know what all the hullabaloo is about on her Königin der Nacht? No, she's far from awful. I just feel that here, she seems rushed (& I'm not talking about the tempo) & out of breath– because she is rushed! A bit disappointing after all the praise... Anyway, I still maintain that Edda Moser is unchallengeable in her Königin interpretation...
@Rhopoe This is actually the tempo it is supposed to be sung in. When Mozart wrote this role he wrote it for his sister-in-law who was perhaps the greatest vocalist ever known at that time. She had a vocal range that no one could ever dream of and could do thing that no would ever attempt like hit a total of 5 Fs over high C.during her performance of this role.
@jjh2456 Oh yes, I read that somewhere too... Do you happen to know this sister-in-law's name? (Well, can look it up) Anyway, I do enjoy Madame Moser's version of this aria (her Königin der Nacht generally) over other– perhaps equally talented– ladies'. I just feel like Moser– in her seemingly inexhaustible voice– fleshed out every note to the fullest, breathlessly. I feel here Damrau didn't own it as much. She's wonderful nonetheless. But I'm Team Moser.
3:59 - 4:04 klingt die Stelle gar nicht schön. Also ab sie jedes mal von einem Insekt gestochen wird. Und Interpretation bzw. Virtuosität hin oder her, es ist einfach zu schnell gesungen.
Fabulous performance and unapproachable by any singer I've heard. The faster tempo is a little odd to unaccustomed ears, but the staccato on the high F suddenly makes sense at this speed. Damrau's voice is flexible and accurate; her pronunciation is astonishingly clear. It's simply perfect singing.
it is, "authentic temperament" is lower that standard modern tuning, but for a modern approximation transposing it down a halfstep is more practical than original period instruments.
oh... hm thats funny on the stage she sings it in bb which gives us the f..... so in this its like singin it in a giving us an e although its written as an f.......
Her pronunciation better be clear, in her native language :P She sings these exceptionally well because she can easily understand and relate to the music, she said.

@Rhopoe Her name was Josepha Hofer. She was the original Queen of the Night. Moser did wake the dead with her "Der Holle Rache" no doubt.

its in E, this is in a lowered key
skitzo429 2 years ago
Might be sung as an "E", laddy, but it's "F" in the score. But surely you knew that.
wandalewlandowska 2 years ago
yes, hence my mention of the lower key.

i wonder if it has anything to do with the tuning.....?
