Simply Wonderful ! Where is Purushottam Kapila, he seems to have matched Panditji to some extent. Can any one shed light on what happened to this geneous?
this is such a brilliant rendition by panditji ... a young bhimsen joshi with the full power of youth .. his later versions were much more mellow ... brilliant..
This is a doctored tape. At a few places, there is Bhimsen. And then its superimposed with Salamat-Nazakat. The tape-speed is also manipulated. The "lagao" and "taans" are NOT Bhimsen's. Notice at 5:34-6.00 its Bhimsen (speeded up). I can't believe there are fools who do this and think they can get away.
@bodhibrikkha This is not a doctored nor super-imposed tape. This was sung only Pt. Bhimsen Joshi and his disciple, Purushottam Kapila in 1957 at Jallandhar. Salamat-ji and Nazakat-ji are nowhere in this.
While this recording of Raag Multani is published by Music Today, I have acquired a recording of Bhimsen-ji's Bhairavi sung immediately after this Raag from a descendant of Purushottam Kapila himself.
There is nothing artificial about this recording. Only its quality does not due justice.
@bodhibrikkha Won't it be a good idea to get your basics right before calling someone fool publically? I recommend you listen more of Panditji before concluding its NOT his taans.
@Karandebuwa3 I can thank you enough for uploding this video.
@bodhibrikkha Haha funny that you thought so. The tape speed manipulated !!! Did you also notice that the tabla maintains the taal;no speeding up.If you noticed, the harmonium shruthi, the drone is still the same pitch!!! Still if you insist so...for such a thing to be done, if you have any knowledge in audio mixing, each of the instruments and the vocals would have be recorded on different channels; totally filtered and isolated. Very advanced studio techniques.VERY IMPROBABLE!!! Think abt it.
@bodhibrikkha - i must say you have a very appropriate sounding name. is brikkha same as bhikshu? ie bhikhari? because we all know what bodhi is ...buddhi-bhikshu.
panditji is singing @F scale as base (the Madhyam of normal C scale is used as kharaj); I have not heard panditji sing at this high scale before, but never heard something from 50-60 yrs back earlier either; whatever - it pleases my ears
@abhijitbaner in those times, singers were trained to sing at high pitches,as there were no mikes. so as a kid panditji must have acclimatised to a rather high pitch.

adhyatmik sur ka samrajye aaj samaapt ............... pandit ji ka nidhan bharat ke sangeet ratan ka nidhan ho gaya ............. sb aisa mardana gana shayad hi live kabhi sun payein.........
So shredding ! I always listen to this recording when i think my alankara's/taans are getting fast just to remember the incredible standards of vocal music back then.
A million thanks to you sir for uploading this rare gem. Also, The "More info" provides interesting factoids that provide insight into panditjis gayaki and his evolution to where and who is today.
Just listen to the heavenly music will you folks? And enjoy the pure genius. Stop prattling about such as these throat-breaking taans, which the great Ustad Salamat Khan sahib also used to produce without much effort. Go and listen to his yaman on youtube it's barely three minutes. Long enough for eternity! May ALL these great souls live forever!
Not much can be said about Panditjis performance. It is extraordinary and almost beyond human vocal range. Interestingly, the other person is not shy and providing excellent support as well. It is hard to believe that such a performance can be repeated now, which makes it one of the rarest of the gems in Indian classical music. Thanks for sharing.
Exquisite. What a wholesome , complete and eclectic rendition of a vibrant Raag. He is a Ratna already in 1957 (when this is sung at Harballabh) if not before.
An absolutely thrilling experience - the only vocalist that I can think of that sang taans this fast and clear was Ustad Ashiq Ali Khan. I will never tire of Bhimsenji's performances.
This recording is available on music today's Thaat Todi album on Zune (no paying membership req) for 1 dollar and is 38 mins! I agree its so silly to compare great masters, they all have there place in the music, just like someone said that bhimsen joshi, ravi shankar and zakir hussain are way above evereyone else... huh Zakir hussain above mallikarjun mansur or amir khan??? its all opinion and state of consciousness, why come on here and post such blatant things...
With due respect, Salamat Ali Khan Sa'ab could never achieve this level dexterity. This singing is simply extraordinary - once in a lifetime kind of thing.
It is the sheer joyful feeling that an artist "evokes" in the listener that matters most
And therefore, for simply listening, my No 1 Favourite is Pandit Bhimsen Joshi follwed closely by, Khan Saheb Bade Gulam Ali Khan, Begum Akhtar, Mohammed Rafi, Manna De, Abida Parveen,
Their artistry simply appears to lift the listening experience to a different plane altogether- They are the Sub-Continent's treasures having enriched its culture forever
Salamat Ali khan saab is also extremly gifted as a vocalist listen to his Raag Rageshree it is truly mindblowing just like this recording. They are all equally great artists.
Why do people feel so confident in bringing up Nazakat Ali and Salamat Ali Khan with this video? They don't sound anything like this video and have produced nothing even close to what Bharat Ratna Pt. Bhimsen Joshi has sung.
They are not all equally great artists. Bharat Ratna Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, Pt. Ravi Shankar, Lata Mangeshkar and Utd. Zakir Hussain are all WAY, WAY beyond everybody.
'Equally great' stoops Panditji too low.
Their Rageshree was okay - listen to Smt. Veena Sahasrabuddhe's.
True!!! Bhimsenji is the living legend and the living lion of Indian music! Would yo be having his soul-strring Ahir Bhairav from one of the published recordings? Thanks for the rare and old recording...a masterpiece indeed!
I agree That Pandit Ji is in a league of his own, but Ustad Salamat Ali Khan had some amazing talent and innovation in the art of singing. He deserves to be respected for that as well. I am sure Pandit Bhimsen Joshi would agree.
@HSPabla, this piece was extracted from the commercial recording from Music Today-Bhimsen Joshi 75 years CD. With all due respect to Salamat Ali Khan sahab, this is none other than Pt.Bhimsen Joshi.
The exposition of this raag by the master is just one of several examples that makes me feel, he rightfully deserved Bharat Ratna. He will always be remembered in the hearts of Hindustani classical music lovers all over the world.
please excuse my ignorance, but can someone explain to me, if those pitched sounds are extreamly wild gamak? is it realy possile to achieve that sound with your throat? i feel completly unarmed to face this kind of music. im a begginer student of sitar and hindostani music in general but i never thought that something like this realy existed. im sorry a just moved...
One of the finest expositions of Raga Multani I have had the good fortune to hear - I heard Panditji live in 1987 live in Sri Fort Auditorium in Delhi, and I was just left spellbound - I had heard several of his recordings till then, and had tried imitating his distinctive style, but when I heard him live, I knew with finality that there was, and could be only one Pt Bhimsen Joshi!
He has brought so much joy and meaning to my life! God bless him! May he get the Bharat Ratna!
If you liked the taan sequences, I will suggest you listen to Ustad Faiyaaz Khan (Aftabe Mousiquie), his Darbari & Sughrai Kanhara has some fantastic taan sequences. You should also give a listen to Ustad Rahimat Khan, he was called taan captain. He was son of Ustad Haddu khan of the kadak bijli taan fame. The great Alia Fattu of Patiala gharana learnt there music from Ustad Haddu & Hassu Khan as well. There are a few more but as you rightly said not many do that.
@shankyxyz There is one recording of Ustad rahimat khan which I have heard on the internet - probably in the sangeet research academy archive. Let me try and locate it - it's true allia fattu are not recorded therefore can't be heard but then I didn't say that did I ? BTW, there is another memorable interview where Ustad Faiyaz khan talks to Kichlu and didn't have great things to say off Alia Fattu.
I agree. It is heartbreaking to see Lata Mangeshkar get a Bharat Ratna, while Pandit Bhimsen Joshi who has kept our ancient traditions alive, and made Hindustani Classical music popular -- fails to receive one. I really feel sad about the level of corruption and darkness that has spread in India.
Great news..I hope they could award Bharat Ratna posthumously. Some of our pillars of music have not been rewarded with Bharat Ratna. In Hindustani vocal alone (post independence)
@Karandebuwa3 fuck the bharat ratna. these ugly awards and the ugly politics dont deserve to be conferred onto panditji. either no award is better, or musicians should form an independant guild which confers awards, like a peer reviewed scientific body.
i too have the original CD. the CDs are made from old recordings and like many of the earlier recordings (for example if you listen to Ustand Abdul Karim Khan 1904 recordings) you will find similar super fast taans. but later recordings show more reasonable speeds. nevertheless super fun to listen to them.
Those Ustads were capable of such rapid taans. Let some years pass by, people will say the same about singers that we have heard live and are capable of producing such taans.
This is amazing recording. Listen to some of the taans and how long they go on. Pt. Bhimsen Joshi is truly God's gift to our times.
He sang at Sawai Gandharva festival 2007 (incidentally Multani yet again) and it is truly amazing how well he manages to sing even in failing health. God bless him!
maybe, but thank god he stuck to music and became a true grand-master. i am curious about how the title of pandit, ustad is conferred. is there a system? is it based on peers opinions?
Its based on general recognition. Ustad is for Muslim and Pandit for Hindus. Sometimes the same person is called Ud/Pdt by some and not acknowledged by others. Only the greatest are acknowledged by everyone. Maybe top 5 on each instrument.
My kudos and admirations to your father, Kapila-ji. His phirat is truly a divine gift and he is the only disciple of Bhimsenji who has shown the gift as far as i can think of.
If possible, please upload some of his music. I would love to hear more of him.
Thanks also to Music India for releasing such a treasure to the public.
Uff... is it possible for a human to sing like this. Thats the thought that ran in my mind. Human voice, creativity, and intelligence taken to its most beautiful limits.
Simply Wonderful ! Where is Purushottam Kapila, he seems to have matched Panditji to some extent. Can any one shed light on what happened to this geneous?

This recording is of Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, taken from a very commercial CD series by Music Today.

i too have the original CD. the CDs are made from old recordings and like many of the earlier recordings (for example if you listen to Ustand Abdul Karim Khan 1904 recordings) you will find similar super fast taans. but later recordings show more reasonable speeds. nevertheless super fun to listen to them.

But is not hard to believe that Bhimsen-ji is capable of creating such fast taans.
Still, his creativity is unfathomable in this recording.

Those Ustads were capable of such rapid taans. Let some years pass by, people will say the same about singers that we have heard live and are capable of producing such taans.

This seems to be speeded up. The actual is a little slower and the pitch is more normal.

nope..this is original..
i have the CD...
it does sound a bit odd.. cos no one else can sing taanas at that speed any more..

I've never heard anyone with these vocal controls.... Just makes you want to learn indian classical music.....

i think he could have easily qualified as a dashing bollywood actor as well.

maybe, but thank god he stuck to music and became a true grand-master. i am curious about how the title of pandit, ustad is conferred. is there a system? is it based on peers opinions?
bheegicigarette 3 years ago
Its based on general recognition. Ustad is for Muslim and Pandit for Hindus. Sometimes the same person is called Ud/Pdt by some and not acknowledged by others. Only the greatest are acknowledged by everyone. Maybe top 5 on each instrument.
ande1718 3 years ago
this is humanly impossible to sing.
heavyatheart 4 years ago
It's only possible because of years of work ethics of 16 hours per day...

if i may ask would i be able to download this whole piece on the internet, i find it harder to enjoy when it is isolated from the entire rendition.
Thankyou

This song was recorded in Amritsar. The vocal support was provided by Parshotam Kapila who is my father.

Please tell your father that he is the only disciple that has truly shown and acknowledged the greatness of Bhimsen-ji's gayaki.
Would you please message me his biodata?
Does your father remember this concert well?
Does he perform today?
Karandebuwa3 4 years ago
My father thanks you for your comments. He lives in London. He still sings, but only at home.
Purvi30 4 years ago
My kudos and admirations to your father, Kapila-ji. His phirat is truly a divine gift and he is the only disciple of Bhimsenji who has shown the gift as far as i can think of.
If possible, please upload some of his music. I would love to hear more of him.
Thanks also to Music India for releasing such a treasure to the public.
