  • Lola sent me.

  • This is the most awesome music video I have ever seen. I love these guys. Sail on, Nicky and Pete. We appreciate & miss you.

  • I am getting some racial vibes from this song :(

  • @luminousbulb I'm getting some WTF are you talking about vibes from your comment.

  • @9bukowski Woh! Tone down the oppresive vibrations man. I'm (we) are just saying that there are definitely some discriminating vibes going on with this song. Peace out.

  • @luminousbulb discriminating agasint who??

  • @luminousbulb oppressive vibrations? Discriminating against who, the relatives of Lord Greystoke? Did you even listen to the song in its entirety? Its about escaping from an oppressive/repressive society and living a simpler life also The Kinks already had issues with using "Coca-Cola" in a song and probably didn't want to go thru the same thing by using "Tarzan" in a song.

  • @luminousbulb WHATever!!!!

  • @luminousbulb Then you are getting it wrong! The song is about leaving all the everyday sh*t behind and going back to basics... No more no less...!!!

Ray Davies is not a racist and some of his biggest (musical) heroes are the old black blues guitarists/singers... People he has worshipped since early childhood!!!

  • Great I am Ape man too.

  • Although I feel Ray Davies is a tad smug this is my favorite Kinks' song..Saw the band 1974 at college, John Carroll University in Cleveland. They played maybe..maybe 45 minutes..Okaaaay, Ray..

  • @801liveable Too bad they shorted Cleveland. I saw them twice in Detroit, early-mid seventies (Schoolboys In Disgrace tour and another) and they played their asses off, doing a whole "concept" performance plus a bunch of their hits. Love 'em, and love this song.

  • @naginudnod L Okay, so maybe I exaggerated. It was probably about an hour..Hey, I like Ray and Dave Davies too. I like their peculiar hooks. It just seemed like they didn't really care when I saw them. Maybe they didn't like Cleveland...

  • @801liveable

must have been a lame crowd... Ray feeds off the crowd Deyo!

  • This was my favorite song when I was about five years old, (I had a cool older brother who played for me all the classic bands) and now some 30-odd years later it's my favorite song again!

  • wish I could sail away and live like an apeman

  • It's a shame that Ray Davies and his brother Dave just never get along with one another because The Kinks from the early 60's to the early 90's just put out some great music in their days together as a band.

  • tHE kINKS ARE THE MOST UNDERRATED BAND IN HISTORY

  • @xxxrockstar86xxx I agree and so is Roxy Music...

  • @xxxrockstar86xxx they're not underrated though?

  • 94 apemen don't like this

  • It's soooooooo true. I prefer to live as an apeman. I will now smash this device and return to what is true. Fuck you computer. Give me the gorgeous open fields and blue s . . . wait.. . it's cold out. .. . I want some wine. . . and entertainment. . . damn.

  • Even my young sons adore this song and request it constantly! I love it!

  • Let's hope we all can sail away, from our ignorance and self indulgence! Happy New year

  • um...

  • Why the long face LOL

  • Merry christmas everyone! I woke up with this song in my head. How bloody random is that!

  • @GigglesClifton9 it's new years day and I woke up with this song in my head! no idea where it came from

  • This is an amazing song and video. Spot on in so many ways. Seen em but not at The Grandeballroom :) Detroit will rise again I love Rock City

  • "I think I'm so educated and I'm so civilized, 'cos I'm a strict vegetarian"

These guys have some of the funniest lines in music history.

  • top of the pops- i was 7 yrs old just had moved to Scotland with my folks, but remember the guy with the gorilla mask... Terrific memory-, thanks....

  • Thank you thank you thank you. I so love this song. Am passing it on. Yeah!

  • The message of the song is clear, we ignore it at our peril. Droughts in the winter, 160 mph winds is Scotland is just the beginning....

  • Hey Kinks...yeah!. R.I.P. my brother Adam Leslie. He loved you guys....have a nice day...

  • Got to see them at the Eastown Theater in Detroit on December 11, 1970.

Went to see Bob Seger and didn't know the Kinks were playing.

What a great concert, Kinks, Quatermass, and Bob Seger for $4 cover.

Now that was the place to see a band in concert.

  • A serious song - in 1970 - a nuclear war was "in the air" - KUBA-crisis a.s.o.

  • One of my favorite songs of all time.

  • this makes me think of Chris from skins

  • I met Ray Davies back stage at Irvine Meadows 1985 the Kinks 'Under the Stars" tour - Ray was not a cool or nice guy at all ,....still, I love and respect ray and the kinks forever ,..they are rock's most amazing band of all time ,..with the greatest most experienced songs - easily my favorite band ,...

  • @GreenhouseEffectGE That is AweSome!!!!!!!!! I wish i could've met him

  • I met Ray at a bar, or as the Brits say , a "pub" when they were in the U.S. in the early 80s. I bought him a beer, or as the Brits say, a "pint". A right smashin' bloke!

  • hair twirl at 1:47... so cute. (Y)

  • is Ray Davies a Jew?

  • @MrJohnthegreat22 he's English buddy

  • Could that be Elton John playing the piano? There's something about the way he moves and plays and the timing is right. I'm sure that 'Your Song' his first UK hit [I think] was released in 1970. Or did Rocket Man come first - I'm sure someone will put me right. Anyway - brilliant song, brilliantly performed - as always.

  • Oh, and the line is "the air pollution is *fogging* up my eyes." Odd, I always heard something else.

  • Thanks for posting... man, do I ever heart this song. Never saw it performed.

  • this whole song and the video are fantastic...

but may I say 1:44 to 1:49 is just o_o'

  • hehe i luv this

  • dave does the flippy hair: panties drop.

  • 30 people aren't ape men

  • Kinks = overrated? Impossible. Couldn't happen, regardless of the immensity of accolades.

  • @JohnnyCxviii ok which idiot says that the kinks are overrated?!!!

  • @rockingwhiterabbit Don't worry. I took care of that guy. We won't be hearing from him again.

  • **He moves away from the mic to breathe in

  • "I'm a King Kong Man, I'm a Voodoo Man - I'm an Ape Man."

  • Everybody's having so much fun :]

  • lumina . . Thats sweet! majorhoop . . . Simple isnt it . . Genius indeed!

  • I love this song

  • Fantastic song!

  • Where they gay? Just wondering.

  • @JoeAverage000 Both Davies brothers are married, but very gay friendly. Like many other English rock stars, they're also big fans of Jayne County.

  • "I'll be your Tarzan, you'll be my Jane,

I'll keep you warm and you'll keep me sane."

    ray davies------genious

  • My dad used to play this song for me and my brother as kids. He used to tease us and call us little monkeys and say this song was for us. :]

  • Every time I see woman driving with cell phones pressed to their heads, every annoying TV commercial(they are worse than ever),every sporting event or small gossip that attracts undue attention, every time i set foot at work or am driving on the road, etc etc...I want to get the hell away from these stupid apes around me.

  • This song is about anti-technology, going back to a simpler life, it is the normal experience of remembering a fonder period when you whee younger. Look, my grandparents didn't understand the fade of radio; my parents didn't understand the obsession with TV; and I don't understand why the internet controls so many people. It is fun watching old videos, and looking at sports, that's about it...Younger people have a different view.

  • @candyrn16141 It's sheer randomness, yet relevant to your comment: I work at a school, and don't carry my purse around bc am with kids all day, playing/teaching. I don't wear a watch, so I usually tuck my cell phone under my bra strap. THEN on Monday this past week the teacher whose class am working in saw me put it there AND SHE FREAKED! Told me she used to do the SAME THING for YEARS and ended up with a GIANT TUMOR in THAT. VERY. SPOT.

    I bought a watch.

    Technology = danger.

    :-(

  • I just got home from watching rise of the planet of the apes and the first things I did was listen to this song.

  • The bassist is so chill :D

  • I love love love Ray Davies. This song just makes me so damned happy (and it's just as relevant today as it was 40+ years ago)

  • At the time of this comment, 29 people have not yet evolved to the level of ape.

  • I love the dude in the gorilla costume. Damn, if only they would play the White House. I'd like to see O'dumbo and Mis-hell dance to one.

  • back then..i had a hot girlfriend and she loved me to bang her to this song...she called my johnson "the apeman"...

"give me the apeman....split me in half with your apeman"...

    she'd scream....

those were the days....summer of 1970...and amy beggin me for "my apeman"

wonder where she is today....rather remember her as she was...

  • papa chango lives in puerto escondido.

  • mk1161- wtf are you talking about you tard, this song has nothing to do with racism. if you dont like the kinks then why are you posting stupid comments on their videos? jus go back to jerking off over your crappy punky pre teen whiny bands ya douche

  • @jackmyers12 ...Excuse me, I think you have the wrong 'poster' - I'm the one who said the song has NOTHING to do with race, you tard! I think you're response was meant for @JUDGEDREGZ. In a reply, the name at the BEGINNING is who the reply is TO; the little blue name at the BOTTOM of the reply denotes the person who made the comment...!

  • 29 chimps dint get it lol NO BANANAS FOR YOU!

  • Ray is the Man! Saw him acoustic @ The Borgata Casino in Atlantic City NJ.

  • AWESOME SONG

  • best song about

  • i love this song ..... it may sound like a toe tapping diddy because of the rythm of the song and the way Ray sings it with that Rastafarian accent...I dont know any cuter Rastafarian... then Ray... but in truth the lyrics are quite profound...on many levels we are no more evolved than our predicesors or accestors the Caveman in the way we still kill for food kill for clothes and kill for self defense....killed for greed or power but we kill just to KILL./ WE are evolved technology n artistic

  • DAN STAMP!!!!

  • What's racist about this song? Tarzan was the "Apeman," and he was a white guy. Man, some people are really uptight. It's rock 'n' roll, dude, have some fun!

  • Great song by Ray Davies and The Kinks. I particularly like the lyrics: "I don't feel safe in this poxy world no more, I don't wanna die in a nuclear war". Those lyrics remained relevant - and easy to identify with - for years (if not DECADES) after the song was released, in late 1970.

Personally, I don't think that this is a racist song at all. It may appear that way to some zealous members of the 'politically correct' fraternity ... but they tend not to be objective in their judgement.

  • the police sing in a jamaican accent they white and not rascist

  • @katdavoo12 Well said.

  • shut the fuck up an enjoy the music

  • The Kinks, what a great band!

I like them more than i like the Beatles.

  • great song!

  • in my opinion ther singing how they would like to live in the jungle and leave the city and live happly like an ape man

  • @katdavoo12 ....Yeah,and they just happen to be singing it in a 'fake' jamaican accent.

  • @JUDGEDREGZ yh

  • @JUDGEDREGZ GOOD NAME!! So you are JUDGE JURY AND EXECUTIONER? Newsflash!!!!! It is a Fucking Song With NO rascism behind it!!! It is you that are a racist if you are even thinking that! And your liberal minded --ooooooohhh i have to be PC!!! can Jump in a puddle.Nonsense,Crawl back to the Rocks you came from -Gollum! This band has done nothing but put smiles on faces worldwide for Decades! And you? Go inflate HATE ,like there aint enough already!. You new name is now IHATEMIRRORS! cant look!!

  • @TheZayne34 I speak unspeakable truths.YOU talk nothing but shite. So toddle of son,or i'll beat the living hell out of you.You utter CUNT. lol

  • @JUDGEDREGZ Why do you listen to this if all you can do is troll? lol....

  • @pistolsfan961 I didnt 'listen to it'-I clicked on 'Stop Download' the moment this racist video begins, and then typed my comments. Its not rocket science, you soft Cunt.

  • Comment removed

  • @JUDGEDREGZ What's the point? No one's gonna listen to you if you keep trolling and don't put up a good argument. We know you hate the song, but why? Why is it racist?

  • @JUDGEDREGZ ...The point is, ya big goof, that if you believe in evolution (as opposed to God) then we are ALL "apemen." This has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with race! If you happen to be one of those unfortunate people who doesn't understand that we are all created by God, and you instead think that we simply 'evolved' from lower creatures, then you believe that we evolved from ape-like precursors - you know, Homo erectus and the like...

  • @mkk1161 You are a complete and utter idiot. This song was written at a time when racial tension was overblown due to immigration of black people. The punk movement smashed these flimsy 'racist bands' to smithereens. The Kinks are a complete and utter shit stain of a band, who tried to emulate the Beatles (This very song is a theme copy of 'Civilization' by the Andrews Sisters). The Kinks were the biggest frauds in rock music history.

John Lydon had CUNTS like the Kinks sussed out from day one.

  • @JUDGEDREGZ ... Are you kidding me?! Who is more in the forefront of civil rights and equality for all than "artsy" types, like singers, artists, and actors?! I fully admit that I know nothing about the Kinks' politics; maybe you do, but I find it utterly ridiculous that ANYONE would take the song to be racist, just on its own merits (or lack thereof). If anything, the song tries to take us ALL a rung or two down the evolutionary ladder...

  • @JUDGEDREGZ You are a but a little hater. And i doubt you have much of a vocabulary besides "CUNT"
