I read in their "Taking the Walk" book that they decided to include the chorus of kids singing "Nig Ne Themba" in the song, because they wanted to include some south african elements, so that they would add character and meaning to the song, and they had casually listened to the kids sing that when they'd first met them. Then they found out it actually meant "I Have Hope", and I think that they must've felt it was laike a sign, since that's just what "Great Divide" is about :)

Most haters don't make it that far, but if they do, they become hardcore Fansons as well, and discover that mmmbop is just a snowflake on the tip of an iceberg. Not only do they have 5 other albums, they have many EPs, concert DVDs, and not to mention almost a thousand (not an exageration) of non-album tracks you can only find on youtube or anywhere else you can get unofficial releases.
