That f3 move looks interesting but after giving it some thought I think c5 would be a good way to continue for black. It goes after the d-pawn and white can't get away dxc5 unpunished.
4.f3 looks like a mistake simply because it moves your pawn in front of your king, allowing for more exposure once you castle. I think your opponent could have had a better game if he didn't take on c4 in the beginning.
@dmed312 Moving the f-pawn isn't always a problem if you're castling kingside. You have to keep a strong d-pawn to guard that checking line and you can always just simply make a pre-emptive move to h1 or h8 if things get messy.
The advantage is that you already have a rook on the f-file supporting your pawn and it can lead to all sorts of brutal attacks.
I agree that the f3 move here probably isn't the best opening move but it looks playable enough and it has an element of surprise. :)
hate playing as white against the grunfeld. i do like the idea of getting black out of the book lines early, but i don't know if 4.f3 is as good as 4.e3 and settling for a kind of qgd system.
Hi Majnu. Great video. Have you had any other games in this line recently? It would be entertaining to see some more. Also, have you had any games where black plays ...e5 to encourage d4-d5 and then played ...Bc5? If so, how did these games go? The bishop seems devastating on this diagonal when combined with ...Ng4
indeed i will have to agree with colster71...that after the move f3....c5 equalizes immediately and probably will end up giving white some trouble....of course there had to be a reason why f3 is hardly recommended as a strong point when playing against the grunfeld....but nice game regardless.....
Sure, after 7.e5? Nfd7 8.b4? the black knight finds a perfect square on b6.
In general: first finish the development of your pieces before going on wild adventures with your pawns. Read My System by Nimzowitch or Silmans How To Reassess Your Chess for more examples.
Majnu, wouldn't you consider posting the PGN of the commented game in the video description? Just as Kingscrusher began to do. That would make it easy to paste the game into Fritz or some other program and see a few things for ourselves, play out some variations, find out what engines think to be major blunders etc. It is a very instructive video nevertheless - thanks!
Thanks! I just (very briefly) looked up what Rybka&Fritz think, and actually they don't consider e6 to be such a big blunder. It's 2nd-best after c5, inferior just by ~0.25. The biggest blunder is trying to protect against the fork by 15...Bf8. It's not a neccessity - both engines favour letting the rook go by playing 15...Nb4 16. Nd8 Qd8 17. Nxe8 Nd3+ 18. Kf1 Nxc1 - which wins it back! PS. Why does someone give me a thumb down for asking to post a PGN? :)) If you don't need it - just ignore it!
15...Nb4! is an interesting move. Still after 16.0-0 Fritz-10 gives white +1.00 on my pc. My knight will reach square d6 sooner or later and this knight will be a pain in the ass for black. But yes you are right in the sense that 15...Bf8 was actually the losing move.
very intelligent complex planning after a gutsy e5!? push , congratulation!! i wasn`t sure u could slug so well so early in the game, i think you`re moving up in the ranks majnu !! .
doesnt the variation where he takes on e4 transpose into some kind of subvariation in the 4 pawn variation in the KID? d4 nf6 c4 g6 nc3 bg7 e4 d6 f4 0-0 Be2 e5!? fxe5 dxe5 d5!?

I don't agree. It was to early to advance the centerpawns before finishing the development of the pieces. Be3 is a good developing move.
