Thanks for posting! This show was my first ever concert. Rush was warm-up for Montrose and headliner Foghat. I was there for Rush. Awesome show for the 40 mins they played. Never did see the other two bands afterwards, but Rush many x's more! The Capital rocked and only ~3000 seats.
@jameat3r Well I'll be honest, I ain't got a clue about guitars, so ill go with what you say. And yes I know only drums and Neil** (why nick?) kicks ass ass always.
Rush opened for Montrose and Foghat at this show in December of 1976. Interesting that Rush would go on to greatness by 1980/81 whereas Montrose broke up and Foghat was out of style by 1980/81.
"We don't have a lot of time tonight" so we'd like to do the longest most epic music piece in rock history! .... I still find it quite amusing how Geddy Lee can say they don't have a lot of time and then proceed to do a very long piece of music!
@Rushguitarist1 Yeah. The "Down the Tubes" Tour, they said. The "Exit Stage Left" tour, they said. The "All the World's a Stage" tour, they said. You can see where I'm going with this...
I had the rare privilege of attending a RUSH concert at the now defunct WINTERLAND Theater/Ex-Skating rink in San Francisco. RUSH was second up on a three band bill. The first band was be-bop deluxe, booed off the stage after their second song, (I heard the lead singer broke his foot kicking down his dressing room door.) RUSH ruled, and I can't remember who played top bill, RUSH was that good, (or I was too stoned??? all I remember was RUSH.....)
@RogueReplicant yup,you forgot RAW! Too bad were stuck with the saccharine, almost MUSAK-like crapola of U2,Nickelback and FooFighters, with the monotone vocals(no range)verses homonymous with the choruses(bad songwriting) and unremarkable instrumental breaks(zero musicianship). You gotta go back 20-30 years to listen to good hard rock.
@PAULOcbi: Ain't that the truth. I listen to the radio just to know what's going on, and I cannot believe the fucking crap they play. Lady Caca? Bruno Mars? Justin Bieber? WTF??? Good thing Rush is still going strong, even in their 60's.
@RogueReplicant I know ,in the past kids dreamed of being a great musician or singer/songwriter and THEN being a star.Nowadays they wanna be a star and THEN maybe learn an instrument or get singing lessons or study songwriting. Its a joke the music industry, with the producers` wet dream raking in all the dough cos its all production and no art.
This is the song that got me hooked! Saw them open with this at my first Rush show, August 1979 (Hemispheres tour). They also did Cygnus X-1 into Hemispheres ... not too shabby.
I was introduced to Rush in 1976. My older cousin had a 8 track of 2112. He played it all the time. He was older (18). I was 13. He had a car and a girlfriend. I had nothing. I saved up some money from my summer job that summer and bought a copy of 2112. The first album I ever bought.

@InfinityEnterprises To me, the later versions of 2112 are just as amazing as the earlier versions but in different ways. The later versions are rather like fine wines that have aged with depth and maturity. The early version reveals the sparks of creativity that became the Rush phenomenon. I believe we are fortunate to have both versions really. Long live Rush!
is magical. We are so fortunate to have it since it was the original seed of the 2112 phenomenon. Long live Rush!
@flingalbunt After having thought it over, I believe you're absolutely right. You know, sometimes my demand for live music is perfection; I need to hear the same thing I heard 35 years ago without even respecting the way Rush have evolved. I should be glad they decided to mature rather than try to do the same thing over and over then burn out. Rush is so much more than that. They have evolved and will always do so. That's why I love Rush, and I guess I forgot that. My bad! VIVA LA RUSH!
@InfinityEnterprises Thank you for your comments: I agree completely. Rush fans are just as important to the overall Rush phenomenon as the band itself - and I believe the guys would agree with that. VIVA LA RUSH and their fans!!!
Youtube told me Rush was playing at the Del Mar Fair, so I clicked on it. Then I found out they confused Rush with Big Time Rush. You can't compare the greatest band to talentless slaves of Disney.
@TheDrummerDude17 Some other user had the video but the user went away... I just had to upload it myself. This is such a great live performance. I didn't want people to miss this.
For all the other people asking questions about part 1 or part 2 of the video:
I'm sorry to say but I don't have more information of these videos but you can still find some other videos on YouTube that are probably taken from the same concert. They have the same "ME-48" written on top.
1976... back when geddy still had his almighty voice. i hav the rush in rio dvd and he cant sing that well anymore :( well thats what age does to everyone, cant blame him
Man, Geddy sure could wail on the 2112 album, songs like this, Twilight Zone, and Something for nothing... too much wailing destroys you overtime...oh well, he's still one of the best!
Nice recording for being 35 years old. Thanks for posting. Brings back lots of memories like seeing them in Buffalo a couple times in the 80's. Good times. They look pretty Spinal Tap now looking back. Gotta love Alex Lifeson though. Dude was definitely not afraid to turn it his f'n amp up.
Absolutely incredible footage of Rush at their younger prime (I think they have 'primed' several times. I would have loved to have been there. At least I saw the Signals tour. (New World Tour) and I got to see R30 twice. It's kind of hard to catch them when you live in Australia. I wonder how many Ozzie Rush fans we have. . .
I bought my first rush concert shirt at that concert (back when you had to get a concert shirt at THE CONCERT) and went to school and got made fun of for liking rush...ahhh the good old days
@Fkid I heard he stopped getting too high to protect his vocal cord, otherwise it would have been irrevocally damaged over those years. I liked his singing in A Show of Hands DVD.
I agree that it makes the themes in later parts obsolete (as the shrieking is supposed to be the oppressive voice of the Priests), but all the later great songs compensate for that.
i'm glad Geddy lost that hi shrill that he does here and alot in the early days, it sort of reminds me of T-Rex & Marc Bolan, he had that high vibrato shrill as well. Geddy has toned down his vocals and they sound better since the mid 80's.. i still don't get tha roasted chicken ovens, though!!
@fireplug111 I agree Caress of Steel is their greatest album, but this is up there with there best. I think CoS, Hemispheres, 2112 in that order are my top 3.
Holy F'n crap

@Fkid I heard he stopped getting too high to protect his vocal cord, otherwise it would have been irrevocally damaged over those years. I liked his singing in A Show of Hands DVD.
I agree that it makes the themes in later parts obsolete (as the shrieking is supposed to be the oppressive voice of the Priests), but all the later great songs compensate for that.

I love this video, but I'll admit that when they first were visible, I thought, "Wait, I have that hair, but I'm a girl......"

Can we all agree that this may quite possibly be the best album side ever recorded?

i'm glad Geddy lost that hi shrill that he does here and alot in the early days, it sort of reminds me of T-Rex & Marc Bolan, he had that high vibrato shrill as well. Geddy has toned down his vocals and they sound better since the mid 80's.. i still don't get tha roasted chicken ovens, though!!
MOSKII58 11 months ago
@MOSKII58 When he sang it in the 80's that vibrato was gone though, still epically high.

I've always felt this to be a weak album. I've always held Caress of Steel in higher regard than 2112.
fireplug111 1 year ago
@fireplug111 I agree Caress of Steel is their greatest album, but this is up there with there best. I think CoS, Hemispheres, 2112 in that order are my top 3.
