Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful k.d. Lang. I'll never forget seeing her in Ann Arbor when she was touring for the newly released, "Constant Craving." May all beings benefit from the merit you have created! Much love and respect to you, my sister in the dharma.
I saw this when it aired on t.v. and K.D. 's voice just blew me away. I still get goose bumps whenever I listen to her sing. Definetly one of my favorites. Her voice reminds me so much of Patsy Cline. Just absolutely beautiful. Thanks for uploading this.
Once again k.d. shows why she is one of my all-time fave belters. She can kick some righteous ass on a song when she really lets go...and her love for Roy and the song clearly show through. Thanks for posting this.
Absolutely one of THE MOST spectacular voices of all time. I could listen to her sing this or any other song over and over and over. I think I have heard this one 30 or 40 times and still get chills.
I saw this on TV when it was on. I was totally mesmerized. She brought down the house. I'm glad I finally thought to YouTube this and find it. Yes, it's about the Voice.
Originally she went by kd Lang and the reClines. She likened herself to Patsy from the beginning. She used to sing with her band in a hotel in Calgary during the Stampede. They had a $5.oo cover charge (for charity). She wore a wedding dress, big horned rimmed glasses and hiking boots. It's always been about the voice.
this is the best version of this most beautiful interpretation of this song on tape, concert videos anywhere. and i have a bunch of kd versions of this.
who says she didnt choose her own clothes,,, she liked crossing gender lines ,,, i loved her in those crazy rodeo skirts she used to wear,,, its the voice,, i dont give a fuck if she wears a tux or a tutu
@tami32961 whatever happened to "the music" this womon can sing like no other, bump the clothes, she looks FINE just the way she is!!! So i am in agreement with you sistah
Respond to this video... all these comments regarding her choice of clothes, who cares? what about commenting on her pipes, she has a voice like no other and she gives me shivers when i hear her sing this song!
I must have watched all of kd's version of 'Crying' two dozen times each... but it is in this performance that the Star of Bethlehem which heralds the birth of a messiah, our lovely kd, glows warmest.
People that can like or dislike someone just because of their sexual orientation is absurd. That is just totally shallow.
I mean c'mon she looks like a dude in a dress, how insane is that! They don't want to know she is gay, they just choose to make her look idiotic. She REALLY looks out of place in a dress. Imagine how uncomfortable she must have been and she still gave an awesome performance.
People have compared her to Patsy Cline and I know Patsy would of been proud.
That is a dress she wore often, she wasn't made to wear it. She wore skirts and dresses quite a lot in her early career. She may been made to wear dresses etc by here manager but I doubt it.
The country music world turned their back on her when she came out, even though it's so painfully obvious to anyone without their head up their arse that's she's gay. It's a shame. She has such an amazing voice.
@Tigerlily21 The only version that is better than this one, IMO, is the actual duet with Roy Orbison. It was a piece of musical magic. Musical history. But Roy is gone now and we are left with KD. We are not exactly poor. She is the greatest female interpretive singer in the world. Again, IMO.
k.d.'s performance here is noteworthy because she doesn't throw in the kitchen sink on the first verse. She lets the song build and that's where the power in the song lies. Roy Orbison's cosmic original tapped into that, Art Garfunkel knew it when he sang "Bridge Over Troubled Water," and Michael Bolton has never figured it out. k.d. shows remarkable restraint singing "for you don't love me" - so many singers use that phrase for crescendo. But k.d. knows that the power is in the last note
Isn't she just breath taking? She makes you believe there is a God. At least that's the effect she has on me. I loved that the audience were applauding through the song. kd lang is the best female vocalist in the world. There are some amazing women out there, like Pink and Amy Winehouse and Joss Stone, but when kd sings, I just know, somewhere angels are gently wafting their wings in time.
I got goosebumps that night when I watched this and still do when KD sings it!!! She pust such depth of feeling into her performances, plus that voice!
langsense--thanks for this epic video. Also, I agree that k.d. holds her voice back so as not to blow the other half of her duet away. I can think of very few performers whose voices wouldn't be overpowered by k.d.'s when she completely lets it loose to it's fullest capacity. She has amazing control over and power with her instrument.
have to add this Kd langs voice is so much better than so many of the vocalists out today....some people today don't have real talent or they karaoke and call it performing....
Some time ago I noticed a comment on KD Langs dress on this occasion. At the time I felt the dress she chose looked very much like the dress she wore at the Black and White Night concert with Roy in 1988 where she served as a back up singer..not too long before his death and this tribute. I still think it may have been a sentimental choice...and with the emotion running in this tribute I'd think it very likely.
There is a version of this song that she did on another Orbison tribute that aired on Showtime not long after this that's even better. But have yet to see it on You Tube.
Yes, on Jay Leno. Even as powerful as her voice is he still blew her away, but then Orbison blew EVERYONE away. He was the absolute best ever, even Elvis admitted it.
jebbofwessex is referring to the duet of Crying they recorded for the film Hiding Out.
As for the performance you mention above, not to do RO down because he was a great singer but kd did perform with a cold and she's also known for holding back her voice when performing with others.
@davesyd hello? because she got down singing that's why, the audience is going to applaud when they see greatness, people are just not going to clap when the song is over, people are going to clap when they hear your awesome voice range, jeez, I thought that was common knowledge to know this.. guess not
this is my favorite version of crying ever!!! you gotta own a copy of Cropped and Chronicled its worth every penny. My dad and I watched her on the grammys the year she was nominated for best new artist and my dad said, "goddamn she's gonna be a big star" and nashville doesn't know what the fuck they lost!!! i love you kd!!! bew album and another visit to birmingham alabama please
Roy and KD singing this song together was amazing. But what a tribute to Roy Orbison having her sing this song with so much heart in rememberance to him. Just wonderful!
Oh God I love her voice. And she really does justice to Roy Orbison. Her voice is so clear, smooth, with beautiful notes. Tony Bennett called her the best singer since Judy Garland.
I saw this program when it aired originally in 1989. It presented a lot of wonderful talent before a pretty jaded audience of industry people, but only 3 performers--all women---got standing ovations that night. People were simply blown away by K.D.'s performance, and I think even she was surprised by the reaction. The other 2 to get a standing ovation were Patti Labelle and Liza Minelli (doing New York, New York, of course). I still have the tape and treasure it. Thanks for sharing this!
I saw the original broadcast and when she walked out, I thought - who IS this? Then she opened her mouth - OMG! I got chills! Unfortunately, my tape got taped over. I'm so glad to see it again - it still makes me cry!
I have been searching for this vidoe of kd lang singing "Crying" since I first watched her perform it on the Grammy's. I's so happy to view it again, finally. The most powerful vocal performance (she was amazing)and introduced me to Roy Orbisons' great music!
