69. To disrupt the Sangha, Devadatta asked the Buddha to make stricter rules of conduct for the Sangha. He asked that monks not be allowed to sleep in houses or eat any meat. But the Buddha refused and said: "If some monks prefer to sleep in the open or not eat meat, they are free to do so. But if they do not wish to live this way they do not have to." ... "Devadatta, if you try to break up the Sangha you will reap the evil fruits."
@kao1306 Buddha was not vegetarian. However he did forbid the monks from accepting meat if they suspected that the animal had been killed to feed them. On left over meat was to be consumed. The important thing is the volition - let me not be deliberately responsible, even indirectly, for the death of any being.

the reason why many people around the world follows Goenka's teaching is because he kept repeating that...Dhamma should be kept at its purest form i.e. no money involved, and thats all.
The brutal military regime in Burma/ Myanmar uses the money it earns from package tourism to maintain its stranglehold over the population. This is one of the regimes few sources of income. You can help to destabilise the regime if you deny them this support. Please do not travel in Burma. Foreign travel companies must be held accountable when they encourage foreigners to go to Burma. Please do NOT support these companies. I ask that you contact YouTube and urge them to remove these videos.
smartmoron, denying people knowledge of places and events in your cause is exactly the sort of thing that you criticise the regime for. Violence is not conquered through violence, it is conquered only by peace and wisdom.
please explain to me what you mean by "violence is not conquered through violence". Do you mean it is not possible. Or that it is just a choice which makes the violence harder to deal with?
Ok here is where i am confused. violence has yet to end whether more violence or a peaceful solution was used. how can violence not be an option when either choice will just result in a moment of peace before violence continues?
Maybe we are talking at cross-purposes. Universally, violence will probably never end, and I suspect that is what you are saying.
Locally however, violence may come to an end, and it does so only by acts of love and compassion. Whenever violence is put down (say by an army or police or uprising) there is still festering unresolved resentment that will rise again in the future.
nice theory, but in real world terms it simply has not been proven to be true, sure, historically we have had on this planet periods of peaceful co-existence, but they have been punctuated by periods of extreme violence. Unless you attempt re-engineer society form the bottom up (using genetic alteration) the likelihood of violence arising will always be there, it's a case of hawks and doves.
Utopian ideology is all well and good but the material realm has it's downsides, that won't change.
If I had not gone to Myanmar, it would not have meant much to me when I heard about the brutality. I think if people learn about a culture and actually make some friends in a country..it becomes part of them and they will do more to help that country. I understand your point though, we do not want toi help the gov. We traveled on our own to vist our son who became a monk there many years ago. Good luck or good karma, he came back home for a visit just a month before the slaughter.

Very simple rule about video shooting with camcorder:
Move/shake it as little as possible. Keep it as much steady as possible.

It means that violence cannot be ended by violence. The single only way to end violence is to respond to it peacefully.
