  • And you gotta remember that Kurt Cobain said that they took his parody of a Boston riff and tried to make it sound like a Pixies song. The result was Smells Like Teen Spirit.

  • Gives me chills.

  • Frank Black with a mullet.....the world has been flipped upside-down.

  • Wow.. the 80's got fucking owned right here. Originality!

  • I can imagine seeing this for the first time and just thinking, "What the fuck?" But honestly. Tame kicks so much ass.

  • His scream voice forced pee unwillingly out of my penis. The pixies are the best band ever period. Period...bitches

  • kim looks beautiful

  • i remember seeing this when it aired.. i had heard the pixies on college radio but not seen them live.. i think when frank black started screaming like a crazy squirrel, i was sold.

  • santiago, the guitarist, is a filipino.

  • Brilliant! TaaaaaAAAAAAAMMMEEEEEAAAARRGH!

  • gahhhh kim is amazing

  • Kim was a babe, and this is the coolest band ever

  • gave me several shivers

  • The best scream/shout I've ever heard. So powerful, so consistent, so rock, so Pixies.

From videos of live performances I know he's still got most of it, but to see them live back in the day would have been life-changing.

  • I prefer fab slob frank black to dirt ball, creepy frank black

  • @killbridekill wht are you talking about? Black Francis>Enrique Iglesias

  • @killbridekill NO WAY! Creepy dirt-ball Black > Fat soccer-dad Black.

  • i want sex with the dude/chick that wanted sex with kim deal

  • love the "

    hahaha, hahaha, hahaha, hahaha,"

  • love the hahaha, hahaha, hahaha, hahaha,"

  • Watching this video is like killing a unicorn

  • First US tv appearance??? Really? Major network maybe. I taped this when it aired. VHS tape gone to heaven - thanks uploader!

  • Black's voice almost disappears at the end of Monkey when he sings like Kim.

  • That is amazing! That show was fantastic, and that performance is completely mind blowing! Tame is like some weird work of modern performance art. The song is so ragged but they perform it so tight! Kim's counterpoint where she's "singing" Frank's heavy breathing is genius. Studio version is antiseptic compared to this.

  • @fasteddie44 i've already posted too much on this vid, but your comment so describes how the music in this vid hit me. Oh man that part of Tame is so sick. And then he goes back to screaming his ass off but she keeps the counterpoint going. You can barely hear it in the album version!

  • Dudes got the best scream ever. Were people screaming like that in music before black francis??? dude is a golden god

  • Black.Francis.Is.A.Genius.

  • @shamwoww Now that is a statement!

  • omg fucking piece of history right here. and BEST performance of Tame holy FUCK!

  • I got to stay up late for this one.

  • I would love to tap Kim Deals ass back in the day but nowadays she's so fat (and not in good way). But who am I kidding? I'd still fuck her.

  • First performance on American television? Fucking historic.

  • The real Frank Black died in 1996. The guy that filled in for him was a fan from Green Bay Wisconsin. It's true!

  • man!!! the pixies were so ahead with the music .. this is 1989... nowone screams on tv... !!! fucking ruleessssss

  • thank god for Matt Broszkowski

  • AWESOME...thanks for posting!

  • I love the notes Frank can hit. Too bad age takes that away from you :(

  • Rock us all, Joey.

  • performance is perfect like always, like the little grins they tried to hide when he says your rockin me joey

  • Tame is such a badass song

  • 4:44 >>>sex

  • 6 people are stuck in TRON

  • wow - I think I still have this taped from the same show. Good ol' Dave Sandborn. They had a lot of good shows back then that let people hear such good music. Nothing on late nights now at all for the creative spirit to wander/meander within and thru. Now that I think of it, I think "Tame" is the only footage I might have caught. Cool to see the whole thing here.

  • wow - I think I still have this taped from the same show. Good ol' Dave Sandborn. They had a lot of good shows back then that let people hear such good music. Nothing on late nights now at all for the creative spirit to wander/meander within and thru.

  • Lead singer reminds me of Bill Hicks, good days.

  • wow frank looks so young here. and what a great version of tame. awesome.

  • @ the end of Tame he has a tear in his eyes & so do I.

  • fuckin awesome

  • best alive monkey by pixies

  • Great!

  • Man. I think I have this on VHS some place. Correct me if I'm wrong, but what there some old B&W clip of a jazz band used as bumpers for this?

  • i sometimes prefer to listen to this version of tame than the album version...they are one of the few bands that actually sounds better live than in there albums.

  • mind fuck

  • Television got owned!

  • OK. I just got powerowned.

  • The audience must have wondered what the hell was that! The Pixies were so original...brilliant.

  • Love this video, keep coming back.Must be the best live performance of Tame I've seen,so powerful.Thansk again ;-)

  • that was incredible...

  • cant get used to frank + hair

  • I wonder if those people in the audience realized how lucky they were...

  • 3:12

  • Freaking awesome!!! Thanks for posting.

  • I like the host's combination hairstyle and motorcycle helmet.

  • The first thing I think of when I hear the Pixies is the word "visceral." This stuff affects me emotionally. They are one of the few bands that send my mind off on any number of investigations of the intellectual meaning of their lyrics, even when it does not matter. I KNOW there is something deep in it all.

  • @MrFrendan I know exactly why you are coming from. There is a story in every song and personally I can relate every song to some sort of happening in my life.

  • I really hated Nirvana, they ruined everything! This band was so much better.

  • Of course. Everybody who KNOWS about rock music knows that. Cobain admitted that they were a huge influence.

  • @Krsna93 YES -Nirvana too much doubting totttering existential bullshit

  • I caught this when it aired. This is how tragically awful the '80s were: As I was watching,I thought to myself "One of the best bands in the world, who've NEVER been played on the radio, are on t.v. This is ahead-of-the-curve,this is releveant, this is COOL...who screwed up? How did this happen?" In the '80s nothing cool was popular and nothing popular was cool. That's the way it was until Saint Curt somehow lifted the curse.

  • I like what you said and the way you said it. I actually loved the 80s. Certainly in the UK stuff like Bronski Beat, Soft Cell, Pet Shop Boys was cool stuff that made the top of the charts. That doesn't happen any more. But yeah there was a lot of underground stuff that didn't break through as well. Much as now.

  • I remember watching this when it aired. tame has always been my favorite Pixies song. Thanks for posting this.

  • me too! i saw this way back when!

    then GOD is seven!!!

  • rock me joey

  • Glad to see this one, first ever on American TV, WOW.. I love how he sounds like he's thrashing all over the place, but he's really just standing there calm, the screaming god of grunge ...YAH I can't even listen to this and hold still.

  • thank you, amazing-

  • His screams gives me orgasms :S

  • fuck yes! best american rock band ever ....pixies

  • The Pixies are the best ever!!!!!!!! Come to Oklahoma, PLEASE!

  • Charles rocks!!!

  • It's wicked how they bring Kim's voice to the front on the chorus of Monkey.

  • solid performance..Kim looks cute with longer hair.

  • when th world wasnt ready for the quiet-loud formula... pixies appear on tv KOOL !!

  • Comment removed

  • No, both songs ARE on doolittle and not Surfer Rosa actually.

  • yeah

  • you're a dipshit. Both of these songs are on Doolittle not surfer rosa.

  • Awesome....totally awesom

  • 3:14 is when Tame starts

  • Pure Genius. Oh Im Perfectly Speechless! And I get to see them here in NewZealand March 2010. Very Happy Kiwi!

  • fantastic!

  • Fucking genius. Two songs from opposite ends of the Pixies spectrum. Black Francis (Frank Black, whatever you want to call him) has to be one of the best screamers ever. Counterpoint that with the ultra-feminine voice of Kim Deal and you've got a weird and wonderful combination. Certainly one of THE great bands of all time. Thanks for the video, much appreciated.

  • Love that hair Charles!!

  • I love how a lot of people got to have thought they where sick in the head at that point! Amazingly awsome.

  • truly great band...seeing them in these early day brings back some spookie memories

  • i'm sure she still dreams about you

  • kim deal was past around like a joint back in the days

  • 5:00 on was just killer, wow

  • I got the chills at like 4:40 they are so excellent at what they are doing

  • funny, I had chills while scrolling down and reading the comments during the closing part of Tame with Kim Deal all sexy and soft under Charles's crazy scream, and then I read your comment about having chills.

  • i want sex with kim deal

  • definitely want sex with kim deal in this video, but these days shes lookin more and more like frank black-still rocks tho

  • yea sadly, i cant wait im going to see them in November

  • I suppose du bist nicht die einige :-)

  • @wasupp134 Maybe 15 years ago.

  • @dashofchutmeg id still do her, just to be able to say i did it

  • @dashofchutmeg id still do her, just to be able to say i did it

  • At 4:34...it's like they are doing it. I love to hear how Kim might sound like if she was doing the dirty.

  • Kim at 3:55...I love the way she moves.

  • 1 45 is pretty . :)))

pixies : one of great bands in human history

  • such a good song...

  • Awesome

  • Kim at 1:45....damn sexy!

  • JUST LOVE THESE GUYS . it's kinda funny seeing them so young though

  • This performance is incredible, I fucking love it.

  • haha, I know... I love it.

  • HIPS LIKE CINDERELLA!

  • love the pixies!

  • more like walrus sex lol :3

  • this shit rulessssssssssssss!!! Saw the at Cochella in 04 and it was GREEEEAT!!!

  • Wow! Tame!

  • This man is 5...the devil is 6....THEN GOD IS 7...THEN GOD IS 7...THEN GOD IS 7. AWESOME QUINTESSENTIAL Pixies track at their very best....quiteloudquietloud. LOVE THIS TRACK FOREVER!!!!!!

  • You don't see that kind of performance anymore.

Raw power artfully delivered with integrity and rich in meaning.

    Unforgettable.

  • Sweeeeet!! Thanks for posting this sparks.

  • BF probably needed a throat lozenge after "Tame."

  • yep great tune but cant get the original

  • It seems like Joey is playing a different Les Paul in every Pixies video on YouTube! Does anyone know why there's a Fender Twin between the Marshalls? Frank must be playing through it on Tame hence the clean sound on his Tele. Any thoughts?

  • Joey must use the Fender Twin (via an A/B foot control) to switch from his Marshall amps. As part of the band's live set-up, it winds up on the studio stage. Why would he need it? Marshall amps don't provide reverb! Joey relies a lot on reverb (particularly on songs like 'Vamos' where he shakes the amp) but also wants the overall benefits of the Marshall sound. BTW, Charles A/Bs between Marshalls and a Vox amp! Please check out my videos!

  • The BEST BAND ever ...they just did what the fuck they wanted ...pure genious look at 4.11 onwards ...and that on national Tv in the 1980s ...ha Ha

  • Cool! I havent seen this since the night it originally aired!

And yes, they were even better in concert.

  • black francis's singing was absolutely brilliant!

  • goddamn that was pheniminal

  • insane, insane. so good

  • This was awesome, thanks for sharing this sparks...! Best band of all times if you ask me...!

Pixies were the reason I started a band, and the reason I quit (when I realised I'd never reach Pixies level...)

  • Holy fuck Tame was awesome.

  • i dont really like tame taht much, but if i ever saw/seen/see the pixies live id want to hear it...must be awesome live.

  • and If the devil is 6, Then god is 7, then god is 7, then god is 7! This song and where is my mind? definately their best songs, least i think so

  • Yea but I also think hey and wave of mutilation are up there too.

  • totally agree

  • actually i dont like wave of mutilation that much and i think its one of their worst... but thats not bad considering every lyric frank black has every written is pure genius

  • One of the few bearable things about the yrs 88-90 was the Pixies. Anyone with sense back then loved them.

  • agreed. those were dark (or mediocre) days if you were a music fan. pixies made life worth living.

  • hey maturity sucks shut up!! why dont you go somewhere else and keep your opinion to your self ok..bye have a nice life!!

  • haha they freaked out the audience with tame. My favorite band ever since i first picked up my friends greatest hits album. Shame, not too many people in the US listen to good music, no know who they are.

  • no one could scream like black francis and no one have such a sweet angelic voice like kim, what a combination!!! they are a legend

  • thurston's a fag

  • How can he be a fag if he's married?

  • what does sexual orientation have to do with it?

  • well fag means he's gay right? you the one who brought that up.

  • by fag i meant he's a pretentious and overrated, and his band is nowhere near as good musically or lyrically as the pixies. and if you think otherwise then you have stupid taste in music. you brought it up with your dumb comment about "thurston and kim."

  • I don't even listen to Sonic Youth: they are too self-consciously "hip" and "NYC art scenester." I bought "Confusion is Sex" and gave up on them because it was so bad, and not just musically--their whole approach, concepts, etc. are just pretentious and annoying to me. Actually their recent stuff I thought was pleasant and tuneful, but all in all I think they are overrated, more about being perennial hipsters and pseudo-celebrities than anything else.

  • Confusion is sex is an amazing album. If you compaire how they sounded on that album than they do today its quite remarkable. Confusion is sex is a rather moody disturbing sound. Its funny you mentioned that cuz i listen to it last night. I admitt its not for everyone. But its a great album to those that understand it. You should listen to Daydream nation, sister, Goo and Dirty for there peak and most tunefull stuff. Confusion is sex is not the right album to start with. Though its a classic

  • it sounds like 80´s

  • then my baby is nine.....

  • Fuck this is good.

  • November 30, 1989

  • Is this song about global warming?

  • i dont really think its about anything... but pollution is possible answer i guess.

  • Yeah, it is about how we're killing ourselves via global warming.

Hole in the sky = ozone layer

    Monkey = Mankind

  • Oh and before anyone has a spaz attack "What the fuck pop rock"

I don't care, great bands don't have to be put in a genre. It's music, you like it, enjoy it, don't label it.

  • What a fucking voice. Now we just have retards rapping about bollocks and sound like a cat being ran over and dragged along the road.

Pixies, Nirvana, Weezer, Blur. That's what makes pop rock so special.

  • I want this song to play at my funeral!

  • lol

  • Wow! What a blast from the past. I remember staying up to watch this on TV when it was originally on. Night Music was a great show. Back in the day when you had to work to find decent music. Kids these days with their iTunes and Internets! Back in my day...

  • Sounds like a very cool show
