And you gotta remember that Kurt Cobain said that they took his parody of a Boston riff and tried to make it sound like a Pixies song. The result was Smells Like Teen Spirit.
i remember seeing this when it aired.. i had heard the pixies on college radio but not seen them live.. i think when frank black started screaming like a crazy squirrel, i was sold.
That is amazing! That show was fantastic, and that performance is completely mind blowing! Tame is like some weird work of modern performance art. The song is so ragged but they perform it so tight! Kim's counterpoint where she's "singing" Frank's heavy breathing is genius. Studio version is antiseptic compared to this.
@fasteddie44 i've already posted too much on this vid, but your comment so describes how the music in this vid hit me. Oh man that part of Tame is so sick. And then he goes back to screaming his ass off but she keeps the counterpoint going. You can barely hear it in the album version!
wow - I think I still have this taped from the same show. Good ol' Dave Sandborn. They had a lot of good shows back then that let people hear such good music. Nothing on late nights now at all for the creative spirit to wander/meander within and thru. Now that I think of it, I think "Tame" is the only footage I might have caught. Cool to see the whole thing here.
wow - I think I still have this taped from the same show. Good ol' Dave Sandborn. They had a lot of good shows back then that let people hear such good music. Nothing on late nights now at all for the creative spirit to wander/meander within and thru.
i sometimes prefer to listen to this version of tame than the album version...they are one of the few bands that actually sounds better live than in there albums.
The first thing I think of when I hear the Pixies is the word "visceral." This stuff affects me emotionally. They are one of the few bands that send my mind off on any number of investigations of the intellectual meaning of their lyrics, even when it does not matter. I KNOW there is something deep in it all.
@MrFrendan I know exactly why you are coming from. There is a story in every song and personally I can relate every song to some sort of happening in my life.
I caught this when it aired. This is how tragically awful the '80s were: As I was watching,I thought to myself "One of the best bands in the world, who've NEVER been played on the radio, are on t.v. This is ahead-of-the-curve,this is releveant, this is COOL...who screwed up? How did this happen?" In the '80s nothing cool was popular and nothing popular was cool. That's the way it was until Saint Curt somehow lifted the curse.
I like what you said and the way you said it. I actually loved the 80s. Certainly in the UK stuff like Bronski Beat, Soft Cell, Pet Shop Boys was cool stuff that made the top of the charts. That doesn't happen any more. But yeah there was a lot of underground stuff that didn't break through as well. Much as now.
Glad to see this one, first ever on American TV, WOW.. I love how he sounds like he's thrashing all over the place, but he's really just standing there calm, the screaming god of grunge ...YAH I can't even listen to this and hold still.
i read the rest of the info on this video, and yeah, it would not be promoting Doolittle. it would be Surfer Rosa. that's the album that contained both of these songs.
Fucking genius. Two songs from opposite ends of the Pixies spectrum. Black Francis (Frank Black, whatever you want to call him) has to be one of the best screamers ever. Counterpoint that with the ultra-feminine voice of Kim Deal and you've got a weird and wonderful combination. Certainly one of THE great bands of all time. Thanks for the video, much appreciated.
funny, I had chills while scrolling down and reading the comments during the closing part of Tame with Kim Deal all sexy and soft under Charles's crazy scream, and then I read your comment about having chills.
This man is 5...the devil is 6....THEN GOD IS 7...THEN GOD IS 7...THEN GOD IS 7. AWESOME QUINTESSENTIAL Pixies track at their very best....quiteloudquietloud. LOVE THIS TRACK FOREVER!!!!!!
It seems like Joey is playing a different Les Paul in every Pixies video on YouTube! Does anyone know why there's a Fender Twin between the Marshalls? Frank must be playing through it on Tame hence the clean sound on his Tele. Any thoughts?
Joey must use the Fender Twin (via an A/B foot control) to switch from his Marshall amps. As part of the band's live set-up, it winds up on the studio stage. Why would he need it? Marshall amps don't provide reverb! Joey relies a lot on reverb (particularly on songs like 'Vamos' where he shakes the amp) but also wants the overall benefits of the Marshall sound. BTW, Charles A/Bs between Marshalls and a Vox amp! Please check out my videos!
actually i dont like wave of mutilation that much and i think its one of their worst... but thats not bad considering every lyric frank black has every written is pure genius

vanillafudgecheese 2 years ago
Joey must use the Fender Twin (via an A/B foot control) to switch from his Marshall amps. As part of the band's live set-up, it winds up on the studio stage. Why would he need it? Marshall amps don't provide reverb! Joey relies a lot on reverb (particularly on songs like 'Vamos' where he shakes the amp) but also wants the overall benefits of the Marshall sound. BTW, Charles A/Bs between Marshalls and a Vox amp! Please check out my videos!
