do you even know who vasco da gama was... calling the man a murderer in a time when people thought the world was flat is just stupid, everybody was brutl back then, whites to blacks blacks to blacks yellow to whites and so on, the best and brightest impose themselfs and rule and thats what he did for the honor and glory of portugal and europe over our enemys at the time witch was islam and muslims
he was a fuckin murderer who burned children and women alive...fuckin europeans ruined tht nation man, no wonder they r getting islamified and crumbling , let it be destroyed its karma...........
@jfarinhote Oh yeah...They were children and women who were returning home after pilgrimage.he robbed them and then locked them up and burned the ship! so much for the glory of the Portuguese Empire which claims to have done all this to bring the light of Christianity to the world.Greed and conquest -these were the only motives of his journeys.
@kunaltom1 I was being sarcastic. Its obvious that behind all those "glory times" of every nation was death. That man was not different from the others. The problem is that too many people still think that way in the XXIst century.
I have one question to you. Do you know any other nation in the world with 10 million people that had achieved the same empire and influence as any other world power?
@jfarinhote in that sense i agree.but i cant agree when someone calls a successful sailor who burned a ship with pilgrims including women and children as 'great'.A person like Hitler might find him great, but to me and many like me who believe in higher ideals he is just a cruel cold blooded pirate. If you look up wikipedia for Vasco Da Gama you can find the whole history of his cruel misdeeds.
@kunaltom1 Yes, I'm not trying to deny that part either. You are right about that, I wont argue facts, I'm sure he is not considered great for that part of his "deeds"...
@tigerpoosha There was not nothing in Idian or Arab sources.
If was not by the Portuguese chronicles and chronicles - Their problem to live with those criminal acts in their books, the criticise (never censured themselves and his books were never censured by Portuguese kings) you would never heard of them to talk about here.
yes i know they are coming. but i am not afraid about them. and otherwise. and your country must be a very human country. giving money for the army and not for the poor people… wow! very nice. here we can see AGAIN and one more time, that europe is more human and more intelligent.
@tigerpoosha That was the Armada of "revenge" because the massacre of a peacefull factory(only comercial, not military) of Portuguese Merchants left by Cabral, in a riot.
Nothing justifies the MURDER of INOCENT People.
But the history only survived because Portuguese Choroniclers: Correia, Castanheda, Barros and Pires. wrote it(detailed) and criticize Gama. The unique foreigner was the Flemish sailor at the service of Portugal and of da Gama.
"the brutal episodes described above are drawn from Portuguese sources" (only) "- specifically eyewitnes accounts and chronicles of the 16th C. This is not an Indian or modern perspective looking back - the Portuguese of the time were not comfortable with Gama's penchant towards brutality."
@tigerpoosha Yes, I think is a problem call Ceasar and other Emperors or Explores great. Destroyng entire villages and colective tribes in Gaul (even entire "civil" ones, families etc.(?) as some historians claim). But you need be coherent with all. Including the ones born in your country. Because they were great and many things, but not great at all in others, as we see in history. Gama had lights( religion tolerence and treatement above towards Hindus) and darks (Some Muslims).
This is what i am trying to explain. Vasco da Gama did good and bad things. Even the indians people did good things and bad things. But showing us the finger and saying we were the bad people which made the poor which we can see now in india is a little bit too much for me… the poverty in india is not our fault!
@xjoggix Yes, as a Historian say: " On the other hand, much of the violence was really only meted out on Gama's second journey (the 4th Armada of 1502), where Gama was under orders to take revenge (for the Calicut massacre of 1500). Not having enough men for an actual confrontation, Gama's unusually high degree of violence on that trip had a strategic purpose of terrorizing the Malabar coast, to drive away all merchant shipping away from Calicut and intimidate the Zamorin into compliance."
@xjoggix "...True, much of that brutality was gratuitous, reflective of Gama's own impetuous character and violent temperament. However, at other times Gama could be strangely sensitive - e.g. preventing his men from sacking Calicut when it lay broken and vulnerable, forbidding his ships from buying cattle for meat in Indian markets (didn't want to offend Hindu hosts)."
@Luso515PorTuoGraal I can agree with your views, maybe not all 100% but somewhat.I cant say the same about the self proclaimed 'I know it all better than you' -@xjoggix who, how it turns out from his last letter, is also a racist. I quote his words-here we can see AGAIN and one more time, that europe is more human and more intelligent.
@tigerpoosha I read his comments - I respect your sensibility(how to say this in english) I don´t see racism in his comments, if I read all.
Well all people like (more or less) the different world cultures - depends on each one.
I, for lectures, interests (spiritual and cultural) I Iike India´s milenar traditions, the Vedas and its cultures, who are important to all Eurasian and World civilizations, and important to us Portugal, in the extrem west of Europe, for our contacts etc.
@sarariro Vasco da Gama and some men may have been, and were sometimes cruel, but also escaped the many traps and attacks made against themby many cruel men in Eastern Africa and Asia.
I think Vasco da Gama may have been very cruel. But not less cruel than all other cultures. Through the line of the history, Portugal was attacked by the arabians (muslims), by the spanish soldiers and many other.
This is not a reason that Vasco da Gama killed and attacked some indians people. But what i will say, even your people, attacke portugues people. Even your people is cruel. And in my opinion, colonizing your country was the best thing for india…
@xjoggix I understand friend yor idea. I´m Portuguese myself, I only try to be mostly imparcial I can. And to put that was a time, far from homeland, with all excesses from both sides - mostly Muslims vs Portuguese - even with the standards of the time, I realize that some things and sad events are not aceptable yesterday or today. Thanks.
I am half Portugues. My father is from Portugal and my Mother is from Switzerland but my heart is 100% Portugues. I have read every books (history, art and others) about portugal. I think only because Portugal the world changed a lot. Without Portugal, we never know the beautiful mix with more differents cultures. And Say that a Portugues is cruel or bad, it make me sad, because look the Portugues story, architecture
da Gama looted the ship with over 400 pilgrims on board including 50 women, locked in the passengers, the owner and an ambassador from Egypt and burnt them to death.
@Luso515PorTuoGraal even the kitchen culture of portugal were inspired from more differents cultures.
Look the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos is a good exemple, the architecture was inspired from more differents cultures. I think Portugal is open for everything and is not so closed.
Indians People wo complains we were bad, for them i have only one answer, their cultures, with their shit culture about Caste, with their shit culture about forced marriage between a 14 years girl and 60 years old man…

@xjoggix the fault is always the country which has colonized the landy. We might be cruel. But give a lot. A lot! Ok freedom is the most important thing. And I support it. But I think when the Portuguese were still there, they had more freedom…Why? Think it about you educated person!
vasco da gama may be a cruel man! but he is a brave man who defend his country and his religion. he did a great story in finding a way to india. not only he killed people! even your people killed other people! and listen, don't write here any shit.
