Most of these horses are not even starved, ive seen WAY more worse. I cried wen i saw horses that were wasy too bad, they had no rugs, food, water, they havent been shoed or wormed or anything like that. There is a horse @ the place im talking about which is a trick horse and he came 2nd championships and now is starving to death. they only feed it wen in is at a show. I FELT SO BAD TO SEE THEM!
please, please please god tell me that someone has or is going to adopt or foster these poor animlas. god it makes me sick to see things like it. Horses are luxary items, like designer cars, or nice yatchs (sp?), if you can't afford to feed, vet, or get a farrier for them, please don't own them. it just makes me so sad to see horses in this condition becasue the horses themselves can't do anything about it. I really hope they got the care they need
I agree, if they can't feed them they should give them to someone who can. So sad. I will try not to bitch about the cost of my horses feed, instead I'll be thankful I can buy them food and that they are healthy. I can't afford to adopt another horse but if there is some kind of fund that helps these kinds of horses I would be glad to donate to help feed. Im sure there are others that would also like to help.
Why don't you ask Laurel who told her to call the guy from Sherman and come bury the 8 to 10 horse that had died??? Why did they wait till the heat was on to bury the horses?
Grayson country sheriffs are saying that this video WAS NOT shot at Houston Ranch. It's sad how people don't do the research and go on hear-say. Whats even worse is that FHOTD is reporting on this, and SHE didn't research either. How sad that peoples speculation and inability to research has ruined a mans good name.
I have known about this guy for awhile. It amazes me that anyone would, or could do this to horses. You will notice he has not missed any meals lately.Yes he does own the Houston Ranch and I even had a friend do a transfer there and was sent home with an empty mare. this is not his first animal abuse case and he has a new girlfriend, money backer, and is opening the same eact type of business under a new name, Seredipity, in the Valley View-Mountain Springs area. can we all say BOYCOTT ???
I personally looked at about 20 horses that were siezed from Mr. Houston. I must say that I was sick. They were not skinny as results from strangles. They were skinny due to lack of nutrients. I saw a 2 yr old today that looked like a weanling. Regardless, these animals will never live a normal life. Shame on you Sam! You will pay for this on earth or to god.But one day you will pay!!Talk your way out of this one!!!
He didn't own the Houston ranch?? He didn't have that employee trying to sell those horses? Who was her boss? Why did he spend 50 grand of his own money to feed those horses? Why didn't he pay his bills? Why didn't he pay the sponsorships? Why did he get fired from his TV job? Why do other horse people want to be dragged through this with him? Why was he disbarred from OK as a lawyer? Why does he come off as a little shady? WHY did he let those other peoples horses die? WHY???????????
If these aren't Sam Houstons reciept mares then which group of mares did he have his employee lorual trying sell to numours embryo tranfers facilties in the whitesboro area in recent weeks before the bank repo'd this group of mares he saying is not his?
Anyone can be a sponsor...Check and see if he is in good standings as far as paying this, to? When it all gets out in public then you will see the real "Sam"...Guilty!!!!
We have had several cases of strangles. Yes, it does happen, especially in Texas. But I have NEVER had a horse lose weight like that! We make sure they get treated immediatly since strangles is easy to spot in a herd.
Furthermore, for those who say these horses might be really old and that is why they are in this poor condition. These are embryo transfer mares who hardly ever are over the age of 8 years old. That is a proven fact, ask ANY vet.
The KXII interview said some 20 animals were sick.If you have had horses with a severe case of strangles, you can't keep weight on them. Many times they die. We noted a big fat white mare about half way thru the first video. Wonder how she got there? The officials did not press charges. Is that because there has been feed in front of these animals and care? Were you there? Are you saying the SPCA doesn't know what they are doing. Big breeding farms get super bugs. That remains a fact.
@YourWitchHunt strangles is not a super bug, very bad cases of strangles cause swollen necks even open wounds from the pustules, these horses show no signs of strangles just severe starvation!!!! do your research before you comment on things you don't know about... these are clearly maltreated animals if it were children you would all be saying HANG HIM!!!
Your telling us that the Houston Ranch was not a corporate sponsor to the AQHA and the NRHA and sponsor to the SWRHA.Its information you have not appreciated in supporting American Quarter Horse.Houston has done more to promote your horses than you give him credite for. A corporate sponsorship costs. You need an anger management course. Do not assume you are the only one privilage to your association news. Your insults are exactly what I am talking about your hurting your sport.
Who are you, Sam's mother? It doesn't matter how much Houston Ranch (which as Sam states he was only an "employee" of) gave to the NRHA or any other assocaition, the fact is he let his horses get to this point and there is nothing right, or worth defending about this.
Is it alright when a priest is guilty of molesting an alter boy? I don't have anger issues, you have issues with what's right and wrong, and someone letting their horses get to this point is wrong, pull your head out of the sand.
You People should support Mr.Houston that has promoted reining and made you all alot of money! You have come from the dust of Ok.andTx. to the showrings of Europe where classical riding was born. You should have the class to support rather than tear down what you have gained in respect. A Partnership gone wrong. Have you sent him any checks to cover his loss? Winter sickness, stangles, How have you helped your Sport by tearing down the character of one who has built you up? Where is your class?
Who could do something like that? I asked my mom if we ever found a neglected horse if i could take care of it and she said yes. Id love to take care of all of them
It is to hard to post much here! I have started a website designed for people to post proof of Guilt and innocence. I also put a personal opinion page on there for the more excitable of you. To access the webpage type shgon . wordpress . com in the address bar, minus the spaces.
Ctbabcock posted the KXII newscast of this situation where Sam Houston claimed he was only an employee of the Houston Ranch, everyone in the western horse industry knows this is a lie, which makes him a liar, no matter how you look at it. I think it is also important to contact the TV station that aired the story and urge them to investigate both sides of the story, not just those of Sam Houston's and Jim Babcock's. This is a BIG black eye to our industry.
In a country where you are innocent until proven guilty it seems you calling Mr.Houston a Liar to all reading this on the internet does not become you Reiners. Keep it up with all the bad comments and pull the whole lot of you down to where you won't be welcome in the showrings of Europe because you have such bad manners. It is typical American Behavior!
First of all reiners don't need Europe, and secondly it's obvious you're not involved in this industry, you've taken a side on a situation you obviously know nothing about, I happen to know a few facts on this matter. I'm not sure where your information's come from, but Sam Houston's had NOTHING to do with the growth of this sport, and if you don't think there's anything wrong with the way these horses looked that were in fact under Sam Houston's care, you're part of the problem, Eurotrash snob.
By the way, the NRHA, that stands for "National Reining Horse Association" since you're obviously not involved, has severed ties with your hero Sam Houston, so how about emailing them your stupid views and opinions on the world of reining since you know so much about it.
The right people have all the proof that there needs to be and i dont think it will long and they will speak up if they are not already doing so in one way or another. Yes its not nice to speak up with an opinion but its my opinion and not just the way i feel but the way alot of people feel. The people of the industry are speaking. Sam knows the people are speaking. No more All About Reining on RFD, I am sure the NRHA has or will follow and they very well should.
Speaking out with personal opinion will do little more than cause hard feelings. In order to have anything positive come out of this there needs to be some proof. What I cant figure out is if Jim Babcock and others say Sam is the victim here why dont they post a video of the other 180 horses and let us see the shape they are in?
Sam F. Houston...Needs to be run smooth out of the horse business for good. And needs to be kept out for good for his actions and its up to the industry to speak loud and clear now to do so!!!!
And what of the other trainers and owners that beat the manuvers into the horse rather than teach it? I have seen more scared horses enter the show pen and the blood cover up. Are those not abused animals? Yet no one is trying to run those people out of town on a rail! It is not anyones place to judge Sam and call him guilty when I'm sure not one of you knows the whole story behind what is going on. Is it sad? Yes.
Sam Houston...A no horse sense havin' moron that has not accomplished a thing in this world but lying, cheating, robbing, and now starving horses. This is just my opionion. He Bull****ed his way into the Houston Ranch deal and now is trying to bull**** his way out. Sam F. Houston should have to pay for mistakes!!!
Good call Reinertx, there are a lot of people who stand to lose if Sam is proven negligent, In my opinion, Sam's lying pretty much solidified his guilt in this case.
Thanks for your comments Truth2btold95, if Sam is innocent why did he lie on TV by stating he was only an employee of the ranch, when every advertisment for the ranch over the past several years listed him as either owner or co-owner. The TV station that ran the piece has been informed of his real involvement in the ranch, hopefully they'll do what's right and follow up with a piece that presents some facts. Your comments are pretty much exactly what I've heard from many directly involved.
You beat me to it All crazy, I was going to thank Truthbtold as well. But I was sending an email to Channel 12 telling them my disgust in the way they reported on this. I have no clue what the facts are but I think a video of the other 180 horses, interviews with people who moved them, and vets to verify they had received the amount of care Sam claims would have been responsible reporting.
What Channel 12 did was more of a campaign for Sam Houston Humanitarian of the year. Who knows maybe he deserves it? But lets get some proof of his claims. It is obvious that part of their report of his claims were false, he was never an employee and promoted himself from the start as the owner of Houston Ranch.
For all of you who don't know. Out of the 200+ mares that were housed a Mr. Houston's personal residence all weren't owned by the Houston Ranch. There were a couple of different companies that had agreed to sell or lease mares to the ranch. One of the companies had 50 mares that they removed a couple of weeks ago. The company had at the time 100+ mares leased to Houston on a condition to purchase the herd. (continued)
That particular company had an agreement with the Houston Ranch to purchase the herd for more than $100,000. Houston Ranch fell delinquent on their agreement and instead of allowing the company to make arrangements to remove their mares, Mr. Houston willingly moved all of the mares + Houston Ranch owned mares from the Houston Ranch property over to his personal property (the place where the TV station filmed) and would not allow the company to reclaim their horses. (continued)
Since Aug or Sept. of last year they tried to get their horses away from Mr. Houston's personal property to no avail. Finally about a month a go, Mr. Houston told the company that they had one week to remove their horses or he would start charging them board. Remember Mr. Houston would not release the mares prior to this point. The company made arrangements for their horses to be removed. (continued)
The owners came to a location away from Mr. Houston's property where they found their mares in the same shape as the ones in the video posted above. All of horses were malnourished and emaciated. Out of the 50 head rescued only a few were still usable as recipients. At least one of the mares salvaged was in such poor shape she had to be humanely put down. Mr. Houston's claims a $50,000 hay bill. But, if you were to see the condition of all of the horses in his care, they say otherwise! (cont...)
About Mr. Houston's statement of how all of the horses that were filmed in poor condition were "sick" is false. If any of the horses were sick it was because of their poor body condition and weakened immune system from the lack of feed. And if Mr. Houston had sick animals on his property, then why was he not providing proper medical care? Or better yet allowing the rightful owners to pick up their horses? It doesn't add up. (continued)
This is an awful tragedy and it should never have happened. I a sure you; that if were to see all of the evidence it's easy to see who is to blame for the starvation of hundreds of horses. I hope that our local law enforcement, ASPCA, and state Veterinarians will be able to see it as clear and that there punishment be as swift.

Prior to his involvement within the Horse Industry Mr. Sam F. Houston was an attorney until he was disbarred. Hum? Dose this make his character questionable, I think so. Just thought everyone should know.
maybe sam is like obama...he's been at the houston ranch everyday for eight years but didn't know anything like this was going on he was just an employee..."Feed jake"
If these aren't Sam Houstons reciept mares then which group of mares did he have his employee lorual trying sell to numours embryo tranfers facilties in the whitesboro area in recent weeks before the bank repo'd this group of mares he saying is not his?
The more Sam says just gets him in deeper.I sure would not have been on TV with him. What has been spoken and printed about his Sam Houston Ranch and now it was never his????It ain't over...
I not sure about the video or its meaning in this but I do know if you read the KXII news reports on this you wil see some very confusing statments by Mr. Houston. He claims to have never been an owner of houston ranch and the houston name is a coincidence? There are articals that have been pulished in industry mags over the last several years about the ranch that show Sam Houston as everything from co-owner to owner but never just an employee?
I think if you did some research you will find, like the rest of us have, that the person with whom the bank has an issue is the legal owner of the Houston Ranch, which has been stated by many people is not Sam Houston.
And I do want to apologize form my language in my first couple comments but I do get really mad when people go off and do not know the whole truth on situations. It ruins people's career's and reputations and I do take it to heart when it is a friend. I have known Sam for many years and this has not been a fair representation.
I can tell you that Sam or Barbara took this kind of care for the horses before the troubles at the ranch, this is a sad day for the entire horse industry.
Comments that merely cast opinions and use foul and vulgar language are of no benefit to anyone. In fact, it only removes all doubt that you are a fool and extremely immature. Are you interested in the truth then post where the facts can be verified and give real testimony.
Goofy CaptainKen504 Don't you think they would be taking better care of them than Sam did?? He brought this all on himself. Hope he has a better lawyer than when he was disbarred in OK. Oh, he was his own lawyer...
Why would a man spend $50,000 of his own money to feed somebody elses horses... He could have fed mine a little cheaper than 50 grand.
Here's the true story on starving horses, I was called to serve as a expert witness, along with 3 Vets for the state trying to prosecute a animal cruelty case, involving 35 head of horses. The horses on this video look fat. The jury found the owners, not guilty, WHY? because those serving on juries don't have a clue how a horse should be cared for. These same kind of people are against the Slaughter of horses, they'd rather the poor animals stand around suffering looking worse than these horses.
Hey all How are the horse's the true victims in this, Has anyone checked on them since the bank took them how they doing now? Oh and The Grayson County authorities have cleared Mr. Houston of any wrongdoing so has the ASPCA
I'll be waiting for the video of the horses under the banks care now
You may find these video links found at kxii's website the local news channel a little more reliable than the one posted here anonymously. The sheriff's office and SPCA did do an investigation and found there to be no wrong doing. I am especially unhappy with how the NRHA jumped to conclusions with no facts - I think they owed it to him to at least hear his side of the story.
And lastly, according to people responding here, the bank picked up these horses. In my experience, the bank will not get involved unless it is not getting paid. If they aren't getting paid, they come get the collateral. You can only put livestock of any kind up as collateral if you are the legal owner.
Ok, I don't know how you "hide" the number of horses people are saying there are. And if people have seen these horses or knew that they were at the Houston Ranch and then at a lease property and been seen there, to me that is not "hiding horses." According to a news report posted online last night, representing neither side, just the horses, both the sheriff and the SPCA found no cause for action.
CT if you have all the facts then please explain how these horses are in this shape and Sam Claims to have spent $50k in 6 months to feed and care for these horses? They obvious had to eat the money since the farrier didnt get any of it. By the way how is the National Futuriy Association coming? wanna tell us how that partnership is going? Certain people should just hunker down and hope the shit doesnt fly on them as well from this.
Well CT if you know all the facts could you explain for us how these horses got in this shape when Sam is claiming to have spent $50K in 4 months in care and feed? They have not saw a farier in years by the looks of them, and that 1 hay bale for that many horses is not going to last long. By the way how is the all american futurity thing coming? Do you want to talk about that partnership now?
What does Sam Houston being on several boards have to do with the bad treatment of these horses? He want be on any more boards. He does need to serve some time!!!! I hope he gets what is due!!!
Yes I did tour the lease property in late summer of last year. I even brought two FAT, HEALTHY recip mares home with me to foal them out at my place. And NO, I did not see any animal that was not in EXCELLENT condition. I am a horse lover, and if I had seen animals in the condition that I am seeing on this video at the time of my visit I would have contacted the authorities myself. But, I saw nothing of the kind.
Come on people, do you honestly think that someone like Sam who cares enough about horses that he has served on the NRHA board and has been in the public eye with his TV show to educate people about horses, would actually do this to defenseless horses? NO, he has a reputation to uphold and to much at stake to do something like this. I believe this was done by the TRUE owner of the ranch as a way to drag his name through the mud because of a personal vandetta.
How can the owner of Houston Ranch do this when they were is the care of Sam Houston on his property. There is no deffense. They were not at Houston Ranch which Barbara Pirtle owns. She is the true victim!
This is a horrific thing to happen and it breaks my heart to see animals in this condition. But you need to realize the real criminal here is the true owner of the Houston Ranch, Barbara Pirtle. She let these horses starve when Sam left the ranch. Sam does not own this ranch, she does. His name was used to promote the ranch and he helped manage it. I have been there personally while he was still managing the ranch, ALL of the animals were in EXCELLENT condition while he was at the ranch.
Sam strategically moved these horses off of Houston Ranch on to his personal LEASE property where he lives. After doing so, he posed immpossible altematems on his partner, Barbara Pirtle, who has spent her whole life savings promoting Sam Houston's name as the Houston Ranch. So you've visited Houston Ranch that Barbara Pirtle financed for Sam as a partner so I wondered if you ever toured Sam's lease property where the 150 recipt herd for the last several months?
This heard was/is? at his personal residence. That he was hiding from the bank. Recip heard or not no horse should be treated like that. Anyone who defends this action should try not eating for a week, not clipping there nails for a year, not bathing or shaving for 2 years. And you might get an idea of what these horses are going through. Sam Houston is a disbarred lawyer. Good lawyers don't get disbarred. Horses can't talk someone has to talk for them.
I personally visited the Houston Ranch late summer of 2007 and received a tour from Mr. Houston himself and the owner of the ranch. Every horse we saw was in EXCELLENT shape, there were no thin horses or horses with any problems whatsoever, and we covered the ENTIRE ranch. Sam is a dedicated horseman who cares about his animals. This is apparent in how he acts, talks and in the condition of his horses. So, if you don't have any first hand knowledge, then maybe you should shut your mouth.
My goodnesss ctbabcock sounds like cowboychuck hit a nerve. Were you a padna with this Sam Houston guy or what? You know the old saying goes BIRDS OF A FEATHER FLOCK TOGETHER! In what relation are to to the Babcock Ranch?
CT i wish you would NOT use this language on the internet, I know that you feel sam is not be treated fair and that this does not represent the Sam Houston that we all know.
But your language does more HARM than good for the industry and for your Fathers Ranch,
cowboychuck-- You need your F'ing Ass whipped!!! If you don't know what the facts are KEEP YOUR F'ING MOUTH SHOUT!!! Or maybe someone should shut it for you if you need help doing so?
It was detectives like you that let OJ get off! That sounds like Sams story and honestly it doesnt hold water. The man has been accused of keeping horses like this before if anyone wishes to really check around. Check with the people that fed and moved the herd for the bank and see how the rest of the herd faired after alegedly being feed to the tune of $50k in 5 months. I dont think this is a vendetta as much as wanting to make sure it never happens again.
I would hope that common sense would prevail. It would be sad that someone with a personal vendetta would succeed in maligning Mr Houston just to win a personal battle. Before you rush to judgment, do what I did. Get the real facts.
I also know that the bank hasn't paid one red dime to feed these horses. With very little effort,(talk to the bankers and people involved) the truth was revealed. I think you should asked people who have done business with Sam the last few years and find out what they think of him. I bet the people who did this haven't got a clue how poor a lot of recipient mares are.
These horses were treated for strangles and if you know anything, you would know these were recipient mares and if were to ask the right people, you would also find out that these particular horses were out of a group of 200 and that these were treated for strangles in the last few months. This is why ASPCA found nothing wrong. This is very wrong to pick out 10-15 horses out of 200 and do this to someone. Shame on you. However I'm a firm believer in What goes around comes around.
I know who owns them. I know for a fact the horses aren't his. I think he should sue for slander. Some people will do anything to destroy someones reputation even tell a lie. I went and did the necessary fact finding efforts and found the truth very easily. The Horses are not only not his but he has paid out of his own pocket to have them wormed and you can see they have hay. I would sue the S--T out whoever posted this. Someone has their "facts" very wrong.

I would hope that who ever taped this call their local Animal Control Officer. I think that we will see a lot more of this with the cost of hay. I have owned many horses, but never one with a body score as low as these horses are. Check out the hooves on the sorrel mare. I hope that Animal Control responds to this situation soon. :((
This is same Sam Houston that is on RFD-TV show inside the reining with Sam Houston...Looks like Same should have been feeding horses instead of doing TV shows..."Till we see you again have a good ride"-Sam Houston...
The ignorance is in the people who don't know Sam Houston or what he is. And try to defend something they don't understand. he is a wanna be cowboy. I hope the NRHA and RFDTV are swift and just with there punishment. No this was not at his ranch. nor was that in the video, these are guys who found these horses that he was hidding. They are the ones who fed them. If you have seen much worse you and done nothing you should be throw in jail also.
I don't know this Sam guy, but I've seen alot worse. These horses have hay in the video, so they are getting fed. Everyone is too quick to rush to judgement. Maybe they are old and sick. before you condemn someone hiding behind fake names, find out the circumstances.
I'm shocked and disappointed at the level of rampant ignorance coming from equine enthusiasts here.
There are no "facts." Only a video that is documenting the condition of a group of horses.
Use some common sense, people, and stop attacking people just because you enjoy creating in or being involved in drama.
I don't know the full story here, so I won't be taking a side on this just yet. But, I will be thinking with my brain and not going off of raw emotion and rumors.
Maybe you should check with the bank that took this recip herd back. I think they will have some answers for you. Starving horses is a living, breathing drama.
I think "getsomefacts" is right, people need to get facts and not Sam's facts but real facts. This is the herd of recip Mares that Sam took out of Houston ranch to start a different program months ago. They have not been under the care of Houston ranch only Sam himself.
Ok, if this is supposed to be a recip herd, its pretty small, 12-15 horses, where are the rest of them?? A recip herd needs to be a lot bigger than the few horses shown here. Are these horses in the video those that didn't winter very well and the rest of the horses are in good condition??
Again you are right, you bring up all plausible arguments that will let Sam off with this. The really sad part is that he will probably blame this on his partner that he left holding the bag months ago. Some people have a knack for slipping out of crap smelling like roses and comments like yours always help them. Keep it up I am sure Sam is counting on it.
And how do you know this, do you work for him? Are you somehow involved in the dealings of him or his partner? Do you have factual information that lets you point the perverbial finger in his direction only? I don't believe in only hearing one side of the story, and the only side we are hearing now is the anonymous public on a witch hunt.
Thats good that you dont believe in hearing only one side, I think that ALL of both sides should be heard. If we are lucky this will start an investigation by impartial parties into who actually had care and custody of these horse and the events that led to this.
I think the Whitesboro paper will probably do some investigating. lets wait and see.
Good advice, you may also check with ex employee's of Houston ranch to find out when these horses were moved off houston ranch and to a property leased by Sam not the ranch. Also ask for what purpose they were moved originally. It is funny how purpose changes when it suits some peoples needs.
Don't think Laurel, ex emp of Houston Ranch will be very cooperative. They were just moved there as they were returned. Mr. Sam Houston supposedly spent $50,000 since last August or Sept feeding this recip herd. He must have consummed part of this feed. ASPCA needs to be held accountable for this horrible situation. These mares, who are just trying to promote the business, do not deserve this kind of shoddy treatment. If they were dogs we would really be up in arms!!!
I was thinking original employee's and others would be willing to cooperate specially if it keeps this from getting laid at his ex partners feet. People may also want to google search "hooved animal humane society" and ask the lady that owns that associaiton about the accused. Who knows he may have a history?
Hang On!!! The man in this video does not appear to be Sam Houston nor does this look like it was filmed at the Houston Ranch. Yes, a couple of these horses are branded, but the rest are not, these could be anybody's horses. I agree these horses are thin, but I have seen much worse. Lets not hang the man without some facts.
I guess it is OK with most.... I think it is terrible and should be handled!!! Do you want to see him get away with it??? AGAIN??? How about a little support??? Thoughts??? Where is the Grayson County authorites at?? IS THIS OK TO DO???? GET OFF YOUR BUTT AND POST. Start to get involved and help!!!
This man should be treated as a child preditor and not be allowed to be around these animals who are as helpless and vulnerable as children. skippers lady
Is this the Sam Houston on RFDTV "Wild World of Horses"? This video makes me sick. This guy is clearly out for himself. There is no ex-cusses for this type of treatment. Maybe RFDTV should ask him to do a program on the RESULTS OF HORSE NEGLECT! I hope RFDTV steps up and does the right thing! Maybe take his Cowboy Hat & salery and give it to the people caring for these malnourished horses... Thanks to who ever took action to get these horse to some feed and care. Your the true HERO.
Looks like the old rent string horses in Riverside back in the 1960's.

I see they look terribly thin but they have food. Have they been rescued from somewhere? What a sad thing to see, terrible

please, please please god tell me that someone has or is going to adopt or foster these poor animlas. god it makes me sick to see things like it.

1urbanecowboy 3 years ago
Why are they not pressing charges? These horses are obviously neglected!!
buckingwildranch 3 years ago
We have had several cases of strangles. Yes, it does happen, especially in Texas. But I have NEVER had a horse lose weight like that! We make sure they get treated immediatly since strangles is easy to spot in a herd.
Furthermore, for those who say these horses might be really old and that is why they are in this poor condition. These are embryo transfer mares who hardly ever are over the age of 8 years old. That is a proven fact, ask ANY vet.
paintreiner 3 years ago
The KXII interview said some 20 animals were sick.If you have had horses with a severe case of strangles, you can't keep weight on them. Many times they die. We noted a big fat white mare about half way thru the first video. Wonder how she got there? The officials did not press charges. Is that because there has been feed in front of these animals and care? Were you there? Are you saying the SPCA doesn't know what they are doing. Big breeding farms get super bugs. That remains a fact.
YourWitchHunt 3 years ago

YourWitchHunt 3 years ago

Hell even the babcocks know that Sam was more than just an employee of Houston Ranch. COME ON enough is enough, knock off the line of crap.
feedjake1 3 years ago
Ctbabcock posted the KXII newscast of this situation where Sam Houston claimed he was only an employee of the Houston Ranch, everyone in the western horse industry knows this is a lie, which makes him a liar, no matter how you look at it. I think it is also important to contact the TV station that aired the story and urge them to investigate both sides of the story, not just those of Sam Houston's and Jim Babcock's. This is a BIG black eye to our industry.
allcrazynow 3 years ago
In a country where you are innocent until proven guilty it seems you calling Mr.Houston a Liar to all reading this on the internet does not become you Reiners. Keep it up with all the bad comments and pull the whole lot of you down to where you won't be welcome in the showrings of Europe because you have such bad manners. It is typical American Behavior!
YourWitchHunt 3 years ago
First of all reiners don't need Europe, and secondly it's obvious you're not involved in this industry, you've taken a side on a situation you obviously know nothing about, I happen to know a few facts on this matter. I'm not sure where your information's come from, but Sam Houston's had NOTHING to do with the growth of this sport, and if you don't think there's anything wrong with the way these horses looked that were in fact under Sam Houston's care, you're part of the problem, Eurotrash snob.
allcrazynow 3 years ago
By the way, the NRHA, that stands for "National Reining Horse Association" since you're obviously not involved, has severed ties with your hero Sam Houston, so how about emailing them your stupid views and opinions on the world of reining since you know so much about it.
allcrazynow 3 years ago
The right people have all the proof that there needs to be and i dont think it will long and they will speak up if they are not already doing so in one way or another. Yes its not nice to speak up with an opinion but its my opinion and not just the way i feel but the way alot of people feel. The people of the industry are speaking. Sam knows the people are speaking. No more All About Reining on RFD, I am sure the NRHA has or will follow and they very well should.

allcrazynow 4 years ago
Thanks for your comments Truth2btold95, if Sam is innocent why did he lie on TV by stating he was only an employee of the ranch, when every advertisment for the ranch over the past several years listed him as either owner or co-owner. The TV station that ran the piece has been informed of his real involvement in the ranch, hopefully they'll do what's right and follow up with a piece that presents some facts. Your comments are pretty much exactly what I've heard from many directly involved.
allcrazynow 4 years ago
You beat me to it All crazy, I was going to thank Truthbtold as well. But I was sending an email to Channel 12 telling them my disgust in the way they reported on this. I have no clue what the facts are but I think a video of the other 180 horses, interviews with people who moved them, and vets to verify they had received the amount of care Sam claims would have been responsible reporting.
Reinertx 4 years ago
previous comment continued:

(continued)
Truth2btold95 4 years ago
That particular company had an agreement with the Houston Ranch to purchase the herd for more than $100,000. Houston Ranch fell delinquent on their agreement and instead of allowing the company to make arrangements to remove their mares, Mr. Houston willingly moved all of the mares + Houston Ranch owned mares from the Houston Ranch property over to his personal property (the place where the TV station filmed) and would not allow the company to reclaim their horses. (continued)
Truth2btold95 4 years ago
Since Aug or Sept. of last year they tried to get their horses away from Mr. Houston's personal property to no avail. Remember Mr. Houston would not release the mares prior to this point. The company made arrangements for their horses to be removed. (continued)

The owners came to a location away from Mr. Houston's property where they found their mares in the same shape as the ones in the video posted above. All of horses were malnourished and emaciated. Mr. Houston's claims a $50,000 hay bill. But, if you were to see the condition of all of the horses in his care, they say otherwise! (cont...)

About Mr. Houston's statement of how all of the horses that were filmed in poor condition were "sick" is false. And if Mr. Houston had sick animals on his property, then why was he not providing proper medical care? Or better yet allowing the rightful owners to pick up their horses? It doesn't add up. (continued)

Dunitlucky 4 years ago
Hey all How are the horse's the true victims in this, Has anyone checked on them since the bank took them how they doing now? Oh and The Grayson County authorities have cleared Mr. Houston of any wrongdoing so has the ASPCA

CaptainKen504 4 years ago
You may find these video links found at kxii's website the local news channel a little more reliable than the one posted here anonymously. The sheriff's office and SPCA did do an investigation and found there to be no wrong doing. I am especially unhappy with how the NRHA jumped to conclusions with no facts - I think they owed it to him to at least hear his side of the story.
nrhagonebad 4 years ago
And lastly, according to people responding here, the bank picked up these horses. In my experience, the bank will not get involved unless it is not getting paid. If they aren't getting paid, they come get the collateral. You can only put livestock of any kind up as collateral if you are the legal owner.
getsomefacts 4 years ago

But, I saw nothing of the kind.
brimicswa 4 years ago
Come on people, do you honestly think that someone like Sam who cares enough about horses that he has served on the NRHA board and has been in the public eye with his TV show to educate people about horses, would actually do this to defenseless horses? NO, he has a reputation to uphold and to much at stake to do something like this. I believe this was done by the TRUE owner of the ranch as a way to drag his name through the mud because of a personal vandetta.
brimicswa 4 years ago
How can the owner of Houston Ranch do this when they were is the care of Sam Houston on his property. There is no deffense. They were not at Houston Ranch which Barbara Pirtle owns. She is the true victim!
commonlawcrime 4 years ago
This is a horrific thing to happen and it breaks my heart to see animals in this condition. But you need to realize the real criminal here is the true owner of the Houston Ranch, Barbara Pirtle. She let these horses starve when Sam left the ranch. Sam does not own this ranch, she does. His name was used to promote the ranch and he helped manage it. I have been there personally while he was still managing the ranch, ALL of the animals were in EXCELLENT condition while he was at the ranch.
brimicswa 4 years ago
Sam strategically moved these horses off of Houston Ranch on to his personal LEASE property where he lives. After doing so, he posed immpossible altematems on his partner, Barbara Pirtle, who has spent her whole life savings promoting Sam Houston's name as the Houston Ranch. So you've visited Houston Ranch that Barbara Pirtle financed for Sam as a partner so I wondered if you ever toured Sam's lease property where the 150 recipt herd for the last several months?
commonlawcrime 4 years ago
This heard was/is? at his personal residence. That he was hiding from the bank. Recip heard or not no horse should be treated like that. Anyone who defends this action should try not eating for a week, not clipping there nails for a year, not bathing or shaving for 2 years. And you might get an idea of what these horses are going through. Sam Houston is a disbarred lawyer. Good lawyers don't get disbarred. Horses can't talk someone has to talk for them.

Remember the old saying, "Never miss a good chance to shutup".
brimicswa 4 years ago
I personally visited the Houston Ranch late summer of 2007 and received a tour from Mr. Houston himself and the owner of the ranch. Every horse we saw was in EXCELLENT shape, there were no thin horses or horses with any problems whatsoever, and we covered the ENTIRE ranch. Sam is a dedicated horseman who cares about his animals. This is apparent in how he acts, talks and in the condition of his horses. So, if you don't have any first hand knowledge, then maybe you should shut your mouth.

The man has been accused of keeping horses like this before if anyone wishes to really check around. Check with the people that fed and moved the herd for the bank and see how the rest of the herd faired after alegedly being feed to the tune of $50k in 5 months. I dont think this is a vendetta as much as wanting to make sure it never happens again.
cowboychuck08 4 years ago
I would hope that common sense would prevail. It would be sad that someone with a personal vendetta would succeed in maligning Mr Houston just to win a personal battle. Before you rush to judgment, do what I did. Get the real facts.
Horsedetective 4 years ago
I also know that the bank hasn't paid one red dime to feed these horses. With very little effort,(talk to the bankers and people involved) the truth was revealed. I think you should asked people who have done business with Sam the last few years and find out what they think of him. I bet the people who did this haven't got a clue how poor a lot of recipient mares are.
Horsedetective 4 years ago
These horses were treated for strangles and if you know anything, you would know these were recipient mares and if were to ask the right people, you would also find out that these particular horses were out of a group of 200 and that these were treated for strangles in the last few months. This is why ASPCA found nothing wrong. This is very wrong to pick out 10-15 horses out of 200 and do this to someone. Shame on you. However I'm a firm believer in What goes around comes around.

I have owned many horses, but never one with a body score as low as these horses are. Check out the hooves on the sorrel mare. I hope that Animal Control responds to this situation soon. :((

The ASPCA was alerted and found "no problems". They need to be held accountable.

PeleSAR 4 years ago
I don't know this Sam guy, but I've seen alot worse. These horses have hay in the video, so they are getting fed. Everyone is too quick to rush to judgement. Maybe they are old and sick. before you condemn someone hiding behind fake names, find out the circumstances.
lifeissofakinggood 4 years ago
What do you mean a lot worse? Horses should not look like this!! This is a recip herd not a bunch of old horses ready to be put down.
skipperslady 4 years ago 2
Yes, they have hay because the bank moved them and provided hay for them.
skipperslady 4 years ago
I'm shocked and disappointed at the level of rampant ignorance coming from equine enthusiasts here.
There are no "facts." Only a video that is documenting the condition of a group of horses.
Use some common sense, people, and stop attacking people just because you enjoy creating in or being involved in drama.
I don't know the full story here, so I won't be taking a side on this just yet. But, I will be thinking with my brain and not going off of raw emotion and rumors.
thehorsefacts 4 years ago
Maybe you should check with the bank that took this recip herd back. I think they will have some answers for you. Starving horses is a living, breathing drama.
skipperslady 4 years ago
I think "getsomefacts" is right, people need to get facts and not Sam's facts but real facts. This is the herd of recip Mares that Sam took out of Houston ranch to start a different program months ago. They have not been under the care of Houston ranch only Sam himself.
cowboychuck08 4 years ago
Ok, if this is supposed to be a recip herd, its pretty small, 12-15 horses, where are the rest of them?? A recip herd needs to be a lot bigger than the few horses shown here. Are these horses in the video those that didn't winter very well and the rest of the horses are in good condition??
getsomefacts 4 years ago
Again you are right, you bring up all plausible arguments that will let Sam off with this. The really sad part is that he will probably blame this on his partner that he left holding the bag months ago. Some people have a knack for slipping out of crap smelling like roses and comments like yours always help them. Keep it up I am sure Sam is counting on it.
cowboychuck08 4 years ago
And how do you know this, do you work for him? Are you somehow involved in the dealings of him or his partner? Do you have factual information that lets you point the perverbial finger in his direction only? I don't believe in only hearing one side of the story, and the only side we are hearing now is the anonymous public on a witch hunt.
getsomefacts 4 years ago
Thats good that you dont believe in hearing only one side, I think that ALL of both sides should be heard. If we are lucky this will start an investigation by impartial parties into who actually had care and custody of these horse and the events that led to this.
I think the Whitesboro paper will probably do some investigating. lets wait and see.
cowboychuck08 4 years ago 3
This, obviously, is not all of the recip herd that the bank claimed. Check with the bank to see how the rest of the herd faired.

Good advice, you may also check with ex employee's of Houston ranch to find out when these horses were moved off houston ranch and to a property leased by Sam not the ranch. Also ask for what purpose they were moved originally. It is funny how purpose changes when it suits some peoples needs.
cowboychuck08 4 years ago
Don't think Laurel, ex emp of Houston Ranch will be very cooperative. They were just moved there as they were returned. Mr. Sam Houston supposedly spent $50,000 since last August or Sept feeding this recip herd. He must have consummed part of this feed. ASPCA needs to be held accountable for this horrible situation. These mares, who are just trying to promote the business, do not deserve this kind of shoddy treatment. If they were dogs we would really be up in arms!!!
skipperslady 4 years ago
I was thinking original employee's and others would be willing to cooperate specially if it keeps this from getting laid at his ex partners feet. People may also want to google search "hooved animal humane society" and ask the lady that owns that associaiton about the accused. Who knows he may have a history?
cowboychuck08 4 years ago

THE FACTS ARE THERE!

Is This the Sam Houston on RFDTV "Wild World of Horses?"
trusturgut 4 years ago 2
The one and only, isn't he a great ambassador of the NRHA? It sure seems he doesn't miss as many meals as these poor horses.
