you can use any mark/point on the shoe for an offset, but you have to use the same mark for BOTH bends. just remember, the greater the angle, the tighter the bends.(you add up the degrees of ALL bends and that gives you the total bend in the run,) the more bend in a run of pipe, the harder it is to pull wire/cable through. anything over 180 degrees is against code (between boxes or openings) and that much harder to pull through, so make your offsets and saddles with the lowest # of bends possibl
Does it matter if you line up the arrow with your mark? It seems like you should be able to line up any of the points on the bender (arrow, tier drop, star point) with your drawn mark as long as you use the same point for both bends. Is that true?
@zeppelinfromled Yes, on an offset you can use any mark on the bender, but you need to use the same mark for both. So, centerline, front and back, or arrow front and back, or star front and back.
Thank for the vid. I've always guessed when making offsets. I don't do electrical work often but this instruction will help me make offsets faster and more precise.
im an electrician and these can be the toughest, just put the pipe in the bender an inch or two from the end and pull it up just till you feel it start to bend, then line it up the other way put it on the ground, even if the pipe toches the ground, pull it up and eyeball the pipe end rising till it looks level. an easy trick to see if its an equal set of bends, just stick it up against a plumb wall and look at both straight legs, youll see if its level or not
God I suck at this, wiring homes forever and never had to bend much pipe but Im on my own now and doing everything I can to stay bizzy. Its the small offsets that are giving me trouble. Can someone tell me how to get into a 4 square,Like a half inch offset? Please keep it simple cuz Im pathetic at this lol....
Go to your local electrical supply group and ask them for a small jig bender. We used to call it a "little kicker". You can put 1/2" thinwall in it, pull down the lever, and you will have a pre-made small offset.
just put a small box offset in the pipe just like this showed on this video but on a small scale, only use maybe a 5 degree bend and put ur marks a couple inches apart, with practice u wont need to put any marks it will just be natural
I got a fool proof way, for 1/2" offsets just mark 3 inches and 6 inches from the edge of the pipe you're bending and then bend the 3 inch mark first and bend it until you can feel it bend NOT ANY FURTHER and then go to the 6 inch mark and flip the pipe around so the pipe is straight and do the same thing, bend until you feel it bent. Sure fire way to do it and I gurantee it works every time
@wwdhhhh , mate just keep at it , i was the same as you , just doing houses, but got on jobs where i had to learn , quick , mostly it its angles 22/half 30, 45, practice makes perfect
Do you mean an off set going over a box all the way around? You can just do two off sets back to back to cheat...Put a coupling in the middle of the two off sets at the top of the box.
Think he means a 10 degree by 10 degree 1 inch offset to go into say a 4 square box. I was taught mark a inch from the front of the conduit than add 5.75 inch's and bend at your 10 degree marks. 10 degree multi is 5.76 irc.
Looks like poop. never ring your conduit in sharpie. Unless you write your name on it so we can know it was you. Center of bend is better, multiplier works for kicks too then. Im glad you explained it in english...
I know this seems obvious to the pros, but what never gets talked about is which side the bender faces. It is very important, and very confusing which side the bender is on the first bend, then does it just slide along or is it fliped to the next bend. This needs to be said again and again.
I appreciate your input. My goal was to make a quick video with basic descriptions so someone who knew nothing about conduit bending would get the general idea. This video was not intended to cover an entire bending class.

Straight 18" 1/2 pipe, want a 12 degree bend at 10". Mark 10" on pipe, at what inch mark do I put arrow at?
Because the arrow isn't where the bend starts or is it?
Do you have a video showing project requiring specific measurements between bends.
I guess I'm having trouble figuring out exactly where the bend starts using this tool.
I'm getting a headache........

spitzification14 1 year ago
@spitzification14 better use something else like black pipe.

Yes by hand it's rough. I use a hydraulic bender for that kind of stuff when I can.
