What you actually got was NaCl with a bit of sodium metal dissolved in it. When you put it in the water and the NaCl went into solution the sodium metal reacted with the water. Not the safest thing to do (clorine gas....) but very interesting.
salt melts at 800 C it's much easier to use lye (NaOH) which melts at 300 or a mixture of salt lye and potassium hydroxide (KOH) which will melt below 220 C
its toooo hot!!!! sodium boils at 400C thats why it popped like that. As for earlier, it was turning the flame yellow because it was burning. You basicaly have a huge mass of Na2O
You have an extremely tiny laboratory

needs to be mixed with calcium chloride to help melt it easier

but will it blend?

What you got is Na2O2. And you are not supposed to touch sodium with hands.

i strongly suggest u not to hold sodium metal by hand (if there is any) cause they will produce sodium hydroxide on your skin and etch through them.

Im guessing you go through a shitload of tools and spoons too. Home chemistry seems to produce alot of scrap.

Doing it that way = Cl gas given off, would be careful when trying this.

@freakin1random Sodium Melts at 800c NaOH melts at 336c i use NaOh

@quarkphotonect
No . . .sodium metal melts at 98*C.

@98JMA Oh crap!! sorry I meant sodium Chloride! lol soz for mistake! :D
quarkphotonect 8 months ago
@freakin1random Don't take this as offensive, but sodium boils at 883 degrees Celsius.
Now to go be a perfectionist somewhere else...

have you got any better samples after this
i gonna try this soon

Use sodium hydroxide, melting point is way lower

@mV33rs yes he could, but NaOH is corrosive :p

The white stuff turns into black stuff when you do stuff to it
