  • i learned absolutely nothing

  • *sigh* we meet again 240p

  • what? Nicholas Cage plays guitar?

  • Isn't this guy the dood from JFRocks.com?

  • Nice clear explanations. I have been playing for 40 years and am still working on my basics and I find this very helpful.

  • hey nowitzki!

  • dude you're the best guitar teacher in youtube

  • I'd say the Sultans of Swing solo is a great example of what he's explaining in this lesson. you should check it out if you don't know what I'm saying. Each kind of little section has it's own root chord, and he solo's over each one in the progression.

  • why did he have the guitar in his hands? :o

  • He taught Satriani and Satriani Taught Vai.... damn this guy's Old :S

  • @sudzter didn't Satriani also give the Hammster lessons too?

  • Comment removed

  • dirk nowitzki lesson

  • gr8 teacher ....\m/

  • Where's the next part?

  • Great stuff! Thankyou

  • Dude you are a great teacher. You understand how to communicate very well and your explanations would help all types of learners no matter how they learn...

I really appreciate your contribution to the musical world!

  • beautiful video bro.

  • this guy is great he goes through every single detail. ive only been playing for 3 months and bearly got my electric and this guys walks you throu step by step. thumbsup bro

  • Eh, this is too hard to follow, and just got too boring to finish watching, better luck next time dude

  • @MARSMARSHALLX

IF that was hard to understand then you really need to start with more basic things like what Keys are first and how to play a major scale by itself.

  • i love this channel ,man you're just amazing , rock on good people :D ( and pUCK justin bieber )

  • really helpful

i was always soloing 2 all the scales

    i think i understand =D

  • thi guy remids me of a 90s basker baller

  • I bought one of his lessons. He's the real deal folks. Been playing for a while myself but he got me out of some bad technical habits that some of us self taughters tend to do.

  • that dude looks like a rabbit

  • stupidddd

  • can anyone tell me...when you change key a mode...say it was dorian....as from the c major you would take d ...if you where to play dorian in g would you take the g major scale and start and finish on a? =/ very confuzzled!

  • @sk8ordiet15 yes

  • don't ask my why, but you remind me of Stevie Ray Vaughn.

    I guess that's a good thing isn't it? :-)

  • Not just an incredibl teacher, but a great inspiring mentor too. This is great! Thanks!!!

  • Let's see.. D Ionian over Dmaj7, B Aeolian over Bm7 (same as D Ionian), E Dorian (same as D Ionian) over Em7 and A Mixolydian over A7.

  • All of those scales have the same notes lol, just emphasize different notes when the chord changes.

  • 10' speaking but never playing ! What's that ?

  • @walterschopp I agree with you.

David, I always hear you talking about playing. Please make a video improvising over the changes to a real tune?

  • Great lesson

  • this dudes like the Jackie Chan of guitar teaching :)

  • YOUR FUCKING AWESOME MAN :D

  • i love learning from this guy^^ hahahah

  • beginner to advanced guitar level.....

    yehaaaaa....... THANKS MY YT TEACHER

  • LOL just stop man! You can't play no guitar. ha ha :-)

  • Do you have to be a member of the site to download the stuff he is talking about? I went to download the track and the written stuff and it keeps wanting money to print

  • you look so cool like a wash up guitar player coooool

  • Hey Dave, I just wanted to take a minute to compliment you and your teaching style. I'm an intermediate player and I truly have learned a lot from your video's! Peace...

  • Bada bing Bada boom you gotta a mealoaf lolololololololol :L:L::L:L pmslpmsl lmaolmao

  • Very good Teacher. Probably the best guitar teacher on utube.

  • Resolving the V to the I? Fascinating.

  • Sounds like the chords to "Love boat" - lol, but a great progression nonetheless. Fun to play to!!

  • This guy knows exactly what he's talking about!!!! Good VIdeo Man

  • i love how everybodys response to music theroy is "it has nothing to do with being able to play" of corse it has somthing to do with being able to play i just think the people who say that cant comprehend it or something and get offended by it. once u figure it out Ur gonna be a better guitarist regardless

  • um does anybody have something to say concerning the video

  • what up w this guys hat? whats under there?

  • Two things...less talk pls and more compression on the guitar. If you notice, on the higher notes the sound was more in the background of the mix but when playing the lower section of the guitar, the bass began to rise up out of the mix. Very undesirable lil monkey ...that bass feedback! Otherwise it was informative, to say the very least, and good marketing by connecting the lesson back to your site.

  • MEATLOAF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow, that's a ridiculous statement. Do you think players like Chuck Berry has an in depth knowledge of music theory or can "sight read" music notation? I doubt it. Does that mean he will never be able to play an instrument? Of course not.

Knowledge of music theory and ability to "sight read" music notation isn't related to being "able to play" an instrument. It does however relate to KNOWING what you're doing.

  • Yeah music theory is for creating a song but ask james Hetfield and hell tell you I just play

  • you are not entirely right. Of course you can learn how to play on your own and improve with experience. But most guitar players who don't study end up playing only pentatonic scales and all their compositions sound the same. you mentioned Chuck Berry and he's one of them. Music can be much more than that. if you study you can really be able to express yourself musically. Then of course there are exceptions. But in general you are a much better player if you study.

  • You can no longer see the original post that I was replying too, so you're seeing it out of context. That dude said some ridiculous things and I was replying to him.

Of course learning music theory is a good thing. Duh.

If you want to be the best well rounded musician possible, learn everything you can about guitar. Reading music, theory, etc... is all good.

But don't think that you "can't play" without knowing that stuff. That's a different thing.

  • yeah I can't see the original message you replied too. I agree with you though

  • This is a I - vi - ii - V progression in the key of D. Ionian or Major Pentatonic is the easiest modes to play with - but he is attempting to expand the player to think in Chord-Scales rather than in modes.

  • Is Ionian just a fancy word for "Major"? in every single key? if so is there any point in an Ionian?

You look like you know your stuff so can I ask ya a quick question...... If you have tuned your guitar to something other than standard, then how the fuck can people solo over a chord? unless you relearn ALL of your scales again to fit the tuning? I don't get that :-S even something as simple as Drop D would seriously fuck me up big time.

  • you may simply get to "his" tuning...

  • First answer is Yes, that Ionian could be considered = to "major scale".

Second: If someone is playing with a special tuning, perhaps in the key of G (Blues with a slide), it doesn't matter to you, playing along with a different guitar, with a standard tuning. As long as the notes you choose on your instrument match the chords they are playing you are good. Now if you plan to play single note solos with an open tuning, yes - you will need to rediscover where the notes are located.

  • "why not go to the next level beyond that, right!" wonderful advice thank you, needed that david:)

  • i think it would really be nice if you could do some of your stuff for GUITAR PRO............GUITAR PRO is the best guitar music learning program ever......be nice to see some of your lessons transcribed to GP.....ty......and your awsome

  • Wow I started to get stoked about this...till I went to the website and found out you had to pay! Dang...

  • he rocks so shut the fuck up

    he's an amazing teacher

  • what is scale relates to all . in A

  • what scale relates to all

  • tanx mate!

  • Hi there David, Any guitar can give to a beggar person like me . how i wish having this great stuf from U.S. of A...sorry for my poor english

  • i bet this guy has a bald spot LoL!!!!!1

  • or lack there of that something

  • how do i know which of the seven major scale modes to use at the right times ??

  • know the chords ur soloing over..

  • learned it now lol thanks for replying though

  • you use ALL of them!!! as in, if im in the key of Am

    i can play A aeolian

    B Locrain

    C Ionion

    D Dorian

    E Phrygian

    F Lydian

    G Mixolydain

if you look closely its the SAME SCALE but the notes are in a diffrent order

  • iv learnt it now anyways thanks for replying

nd aeolian dorian phrygian are minor :P

  • minor is a mode of major. phyrgain and dorian and just phyrgain and dorain, if you chose to look at them they have a similar shape, but no, there not techncailly minor

  • @Phailure365

    wrong!

If you are in Am you would probably want to use A Aeolian mode which is really taken from the C-major scale! If you wanted to be different, you can make the A - Phrygian mode and of course A - Dorian which is over used and it's taken from the G major scale. etc.

  • @GuyFawkesGuitar Yes thats certinly an option as well. but the other way works too your playing the same notes just diffrent intervals

  • @Phailure365

okay then I respect you sir :-)

  • @GuyFawkesGuitar yes we are both right in diffrent ways. if you look at the harmony of the scale Aeolain Dorian and Prygainfall under minor chords so useing them over minor chords if okay for flavor. but the other way you solo stays fully diatonic to the key. we are both right just diffrent style.

  • @Phailure365 exactly!!!!

  • @Phailure365

i agree with tht my friend

  • @Phailure365

i agree with tht my friend

  • i don't know about you guys, but it pains me to see a strat with no single coil on it.

  • I think it's kind of cool. gives it personality. strats are amazing, legendary guitars that are made for the single coil sound. but they can get very generic. it's cool to see one with dual humbuckers.

  • if you want humbuckers... just dont get a strat! seems pretty simple to me

  • Ive been looking for the next level Glad you guys are out here.AWESOME lessons and great site .

  • Dirk Nowitzki look alike

  • Funny i cant find the link to this lesson on the site.....

  • The key to becoming the master of anything is to learn the basics master them, through hours and years of practice... Then you can add your own unique flair until your known as a music god..

I'm gonna go the tom morello way, practice 8 hourse in the dark with a bunch of classic tracks and unlike tom morello i'ma use my most valuable tool the internet to find different excersises for more practice.

  • skint0n0minted you've made my list on the stupidest comments i've ever heard in my life... First of all... Jeez i don't even know where to start. You do know that all improve by earn is through pentatonic or modes... To break it down to your level learning scales just teaches you the notes that sound good together so you get a good idea of what notes to use...

  • Hendrix studied music theory idiots. And everybody who wants to compose music should do the same. You must have the base and then you build your own unique style. That if you have the balls

  • are scales other than majors, minors and pentatonics even important?

i mean Jimi used his ear completely, never studied theory, but hes the master of rock n roll, i've learrrnnnt soooooo much more about playing guitar just by listening, rather than reading all these books and that.

  • You're wrong, Jimi studied music theory

  • Comment removed

  • think about it this way, if jimi knew music theory completely inside out, he would have been a better player.

rejecting the benefits of understanding of music theory is stupid. studying theory only without 'listening' is also stupid.

using both listening and understanding of theory is the way to go

  • also consider that jimi was what 27 or 28 when he died? the man was practically a baby when he left us in that untimely fashion. the volumes of stuff he left behind - though it was pretty diverse and earthshattering, was still only a small snapshot of his career. think of how much he'd have learned and expanded and diversified if he'd had the 20-30 years of experience the guitarists of today have.

  • Purple haze was based on the Em pentatonic and definately not the Dorian mode!

If anything the mixolydian mode as the main chord he uses is E7sharp9

  • What are you on about?? Purple haze wasnt in the dorian mode if anything the mixolydian mode because it was played over a E7sharp9 chord most of the time and anyway it was played in the Em pentatonic not the dorian mode. It doesnt even have a dorian feel you are chatting shit look at the tab or notation if you dont believe me

  • relax dude, don't get too over emotional lol. yeah the riff is in minor pentatonic. i was thinking about the solo part and didn't have a guitar at hand at the time. i remember many people say it's in dorian that's why i throw it without checking but i went back to analyze actually the solo part starts in mixolydian, the major third ness there and the rest are pentatonic. i admit i was off guard

but that wasn't my main point. my point was that jimi studied music theory and knew how to utilize it

  • woops the second comment i didnt mean but i get your point. I need to check if i might have anger problems sorry ;-)

  • no problem ;) we're cool. it's good to be corrected tho, otherwise I could mislead others which is something i never meant to

  • he definetly studied theory.

  • What does it mean when i play and scales and modes, What is modes.??

    Dorian mode Ex.??

And what is a augmented chord.?

  • the same type of chords get played in re hot chilie peppers

  • kip kay?

  • bada bing bada boom you got a meatloaf

    that was so funny!' LOL

  • I would love to have him as a tutor, not just a youtube guide :/ lol

**Crims0nH3l - I agree with you about Hertsman50. No one understands how hard guitar is until you've tried playing this stuff.

He's one of those guys that isn't impressed till you play the most AMAZING stuff EVER. I hate closedmined, unappreciative people like that.

  • really nice lesson just like your other ones......keep up the good work :)

@Hertsman50: learn to hold a guitar before commenting here -.- or just throw yourself off a cliff...retard.

  • 'lol' is the gayest thing anyone can ever say

  • not realy its not as gay as saying ''im gay'' lol

  • does the jam track cost $?

  • Yes sir

  • when im playing over all the chords as a group or playing over each chord with different keys like he said am i restriced in the modes i use ?

what i mean is say if the first chord is the D can i use all the major scale modes and mix them up ??

  • this guy gives awesome lessons. very straight forward in terms which are easy to understand.

  • giusto favusu questo parla una cifra e suona poco.......

  • do you need to know chords when first startin out on the guitar or can u just go straight to learnin lead guitar

  • if your first starting id would start with chords to get you started with guitar and then practice chord progressions and then more on further

  • THANX

  • yeah i would def. start with chords and chord progressions. i didnt but i wish i did cuz i would be much much better

  • parli troppo e suoni poco

    addio

  • X3 I has meatloaf

  • Hey Dave you had a video on the Matchless factory tour, I can't find the link have you taken it off?

  • waaaaaat

  • great lesson

  • that guy is cool(y)

  • The hat gives him 'cred', yo.

  • who cares what kind of guitar it is?

  • Dustin Pedroia will totally look like this guy in like 15-20 years! maybe he will be as good of a guitar player.

  • no it isnt a squire. its a fender strat. squires have maple fretboards.

  • Many models of Fender Stratocasters have maple fretboards too, like the '57 models. And in the vid, he's using a Fender with a maple fretboard by the way.

    Cheers,

    WWH

  • This has a maple fretboard..

  • whats his website called ???

  • joeydahlia dot

  • lost interest 2.00 in and still hadnt been shown anything

  • ok everyone ignore my previous comments i am tired here we go ionian on D which is the tenth fret, than jump it up to the 15th than your first finger on the thirteenth and play in lydian than on the last one play ionian on the twelth fret these are the starting points branch out just so you know

  • You can play the modes anywhere on the fretboard.... there is no starting point.

  • yes i understand that but i am just saying how i would play it off the top of my head the more i screw around with it the more expressive and different and there are some rules in where to start a lead and with the minors i made both of them minor thirds so that it would be easier to identify them with phrygian

  • the three modes i would use is first ionian on the tenth fret than phrygian on the fourteenth than over to the mixolydian on the twelth fret than the phrygian on the twelth and start branching in d major than come back to that or play mixolydian on the 17th 7th ionian, 12th aeolian, than fifth or 17th on the ionian those are the ones that would be fun to experiment with

  • on the first part i meant mixolydian on the 15th fret

  • again sorry i reevaluated it would be on the tenth fret to fit into c major

  • his strat is different..

the pickups are arranged like a prs custom 24

  • it looks like a Squiere by fender XD

  • I have a fender strat!

But I can't play anything ecept chords, im new to guitar, i feel like i dont deserve the guitar!

    I just dont know!!!

  • ah you are so lucky i wish i had a fender strat but its not a kind of you dont deserve it its just you need tot train im learning guitar for 3 months it was kinda hard learn bridges and some riffs but now im getting on it and i dont see any time that i get bored of playing its so fun but if you dont enjoy it please gift me your guitar XD im a poor guy from Bolivia who needs a good guitar for play lol for my band

  • great advice, wish I would have learned it when a while back
