Brilliant tune! Cool to hear how it evolved. I used to rock "Bulkhead" a lot back in the day and my friends were always trying to guess what the line is in the chorus...I think it was always some variation of:

Truly amazing stuff. Wish I could see a high quality version.

These kinds of effects can be done digitally nowadays but usually look naff - colour saturation always shows up ugly compression atrifacts. I'll bet this looks amazing off the original tape.
