Whiteass, my father was a vulcan pilot. and i asked him about this. They are not recruiting for WSOP's you are right, but never again? That is definitley not true old boy.
Im having serious thoughts about applying for this job when i reach 19. I was wondering if anybody here has been through, or is currently in this job and could answer a few questions.
Im intrested in joining the RAF...I have previously joined the army but i left cause i thought i was too young, I really want back in but the RAF When i was discharged I did not receive any papers about my discharge, they only documention i got was medical to give to my gp so they could update it and another little bit of paper to give to the guards so i could get out of camp. Anyone know what i should do ?
@GoVegi Hey have you started your training yet? if so how's it going? and if you've picked yet what did you specialise in? i'm thinking about doing this looks like one of the best areas to get into. (i didnt make my decision based on this video haha)
@MAXIMUMDEGREE Hey, yeah i've finished my training now it went awesome! Best decision i've made.. And I got filtered into AirCrew. (which i'm certainly happy about as it was the one I wanted the most by far.)
IN Total for a WSOP air crew man, to fully complete the training it takes 18 months - 2 years to complete, the training is challenging but ive heard it is rewarding! Also you get to choose to work on a fixed wing or rotary air craft system!
Ive just applied to be an WSOp, looks pretty awesome kicking it in a Lynx or a Chanook hanging of the side lol
Hey all is true apart from been able to choose which type of aircraft. The RAF will stream you to which ever they feel you show skills and qualities to.
How hard is it to GET IN as WSOp compared to an Officer position, i am kind of person who wants to do things as well as have a position of responsibility so WSOp seems perfect for me. Just need to finish my degree before i'll apply
I know mate, abit off. I'm not too good on the RAF Halton side of training. Only really topped up on the Officer training. Thanks for noticing though, but it already has been corrected. So look before you comment on something thats already been corrected. Nice one.
heyy there, great vid. was just hoping someone could help me out a tad here, i'm really hoping to apply to be a WSOp, and was just wondering what the training situation is from the beginning? how long, what's involved etc. purely out of interest really. cheers!
If you show potential in your Filter interview, you will be sent to RAF Cranwell for a three day course know as OASC where you will be tested on your apptitude, medical, fitness etc. If successful at OASC for WSOp, you will be sent to RAF Halton for your Basic ground training, think its around 7 months which will include fitness, dress, discipline, drill things like that. From there, you will then be sent to RAF Cranwell 55(R) Sqn where you will earn your Aircrew Sergeant Stripes.
almost there, Halton is 9 weeks, following which you will go to Cranwell to first do the NCAITC (non commisioned aircrew initial training course). If you are succesful you then get your acting sergeant rank and will go for the 10 week course on 55, you're then streamed and then off to wherever your career takes you
Hey, If you really want it then go for it! I think it's best to go for it now than assume it isnt worth it because of your age and then one day look back and realise that you were still only young and could have gone for it. I've spoken to people who have told me that there are a large number of people training for WSOp who are in their 30s... either joining from the ranks or new entrants I guess!
cntd... The RAF have extended their upper age limit for recruitment because as well as people joining up straight from school they also want people who have career experience as they can contribute a lot to the service. :)
Skydiving is something encouraged throughout the RAF however as a WSO/P the demands on your time and the travel will likely prevent you from doing this at some stage or another of your career.
Everyone has the opportunity, you could go pretty much after basic training if you join in a normal trade, usually you can ask to go in between phase 1 and phase 2.
By search and rescue do you mean search and rescue positions ie winchman/winch operator? Or do you mean involved in search and rescue operations when deployed?
To the best of my knowledge its predominantly rotary crewman invloved in search and rescue allthough acoustic wsops do, do a lot of work with the coastguard as well. As for the winchman/operator role its a different branch and a wsop can go for this role after 8 years of service, again with it being on a helicopter its best to have a background working on rotary aircraft.
Try the MOD website, if not im sure theres someone at your AFCO whod be able to tell you, you can even arange a visit to a lot of bases, chicksands and beaconsfeild would be good for linguist if thats what your interested in, im not sure if they allow visits but its worth finding out. Its mainly interpreting inteligence working closely with ew wsops. If your applying linguist then youl be working on the same aircraft as ew or acoustic wso/wsops.
Search and Rescue is a civy thing now for the most part, im a squipper and i know guys who want to do that but were told its being civi'ed along with most non front line roles.
Squippers used to do all the lift rafts and safety harnesses for the sea kings, but even that looks to be a civi job.
thanks buddy. so your saying after junior officer training to become a WSO is the second hardest i thought becomeing a battle operations manager or a pilot would be even harder?
Try not to get confused between WSO and WSOp, they are different. I'm refering to the initial training, prior to 55sqn, the NCAITC (Non Commisioned Aircrew Initial Training Course). The 10wk ITC isn't an easy course, i've done it twice. With phase 2 training reduced to 10wks on 55 it has dramatically increased the pressure on trainees. Pilots etc go through Initial Officer Training, which is very different and a lot easier to what NCA go through.
i see! sounds like serious stuff mind though most people are drawn to flying a billion dollar fighter jet that can fly up to hundreds of miles per hour and can level buildings with a single misile. Im interested in being an aircrew man, got my first stage starting this thursday. thanks for the info.
whats the difference between a WSO and a WSOp? and is it the training hard to pass or the enrollment process? ive been training to get fit since last christmas so i would say with optimism i dont think the physical things i find tough? please tell me more.
Top class love it awesome video! good job mate, I am applying for this role, its my dream! This video makes it look better! definitely want to be part RAF, i would be a absolute honor! it so amazing. CANT WAIT!!!!!!
