This would have made it a legal Jedi vs Sith battle. Someone must fall in the hole if there's one available, and that lake of lava counts as a hole. The movie ending was illegal, Obi-Wan was supposed to throw him in the lava. Obi-Wan was involved in lots of illegal matches, that's why in episode 4 the league judges forced him to forfeit the rematch with Vader.
