hi my name is Anthony, i go to O'Connor high school and i play football, he is the thing, im 6 ft 10 and i have the size i'm freshmen trying to build muscle , i have longer arms the everyone else, and im looking for a correct way to bench... can you help me out ?
@blaze555660555660 you will get there man i also play high school football (sophmore) i didnt really lift till 8th grade and i was getting any were from 170-180 and now im getting 350 all u have to do is work hard
@blaze555660555660 im a NASM certified PT, and 6'6 so i have the same beef with flat bench. you need a nice wide grip. at 6'10 id say put your pointer finger 1 finger length away from the ring on the bar. make sure you contract your shoulder blades and with your wing span never have any more than 80 degree bend at your elbows or you WILL screw your shoulders. a lot of meat heads say always touch your chest, but they probably dont know biomechanics. hope this helps
Can someone help, I need to train for football but i'm really weak. I'm 16 and I can only life the 45 lb bar. I can't even lift without strain with 10 lbs extra. What should I do?
@XxHYMERSxX really!? you didn't realize i was "trollin'"? the 600lb bench press at 105lbs wasn't a dead giveaway? well it seems my "trollin"' ability is better than your deductive reasoning. i didn't think it would have been "hard to tell" but you obviously must be an idiot. BTW, check your punctuation and spelling before you start talking shit.
135 is not a lot. I weigh 145 and could do 135 the first week i worked out. although you guys are making it sound like he cant do 135. he easily did 2 plates

If you're 135 or more and cant hit 135, get to the point where you can. it is truly baby weight. compare to the average adult. this is not to noobs, its to people who have been at it and want to see a jump. just like there are abusive theoy x trainers, there are stubborn opinionated clients too. @thatfishyguy7 you're fucking confused. do me a favor and dont just butt in if you're going to sound like an absolute handicapped asshole. Find the goddamn comment you're referring to by me? Dumbass
@cornnellify Well the average man is about 200lbs, also the average man can only bench press 135lbs. I suppose that applies to guys that never workout or maybe guys that only do cardio and no weights
@datu0108 better question is "am I strong" to which a clear and definitive "NO!" would be the answer. The more people make these general comments about themselves, the more their egos will be hurt. I'm 230 and bench 350 I am, to some, weak. If a 199lbs dude who benches 450 calls me weak...I'm weak. Wanna get strong, lift more and take advice without defending yourself from a personal attack that you thought occured.
@cornnellify lol dude, i just started man lol. i mean im 150 and benchin 135, i mean you call me weak? so your saying you started lifting 200 pounds right away? dude you have too much confidence to yourself, i can build muscle own way and i dont have to bench 300 pounds to get big, heavy weight is not always the factor when it comes to building muscle.
@datu0108 I started off there about 2 years ago. Frequency is the key along with a great diet. I was 180 at the time now I weigh 220 and my max 450lb. I spent a lot of time reading about lifting and bothering bigger guys at the gym after their workouts of course. Keep benching that 135 and when you can't anymore take off 10lbs and keep doing that until you can't lift the bar with out weights. Do that for about a month and add 10 pounds. And do rows after a set man.
@datu0108 I say rows after a set to keep the muscles well balanced. My shoulders muscles were being pushed forward and it was affecting my shoulders during my benches causing me pain and popping. I stopped the bench and focused on pull ups and rows. The pain ceased after a 2 months. So don't make that mistake do as many rows as you do bench.
@yourdaddy20192 thanks man, appriciate it, I mean im not really trying to lift like 250 or 300 pounds, im just trying to get big like add like 15 pounds, i want to be like 160 or 170 pounds.
@datu0108 Don't worry about dude. Just work out and stay healthy and eat right. You don't have to bench 300 pounds to lift with the big boys you just gotta lift =D.
@cornnellify although 135 is light weight u still can get cut up and bigger by doing a lot of reps look at the guys in jail for example they dont have more than 135lbs and they are bigger than the bodybuilders using steroids
@maroboy86 no one cares about size. Ihave a 650 parallel squat at 228lbs. We care about weight. Being cut or flabby or anything else doesnt matter. This is about pushing more weight. I'm here because my bench is exactly half my squat and needs work
@cornnellify The average adult can only bench press 135lbs, I think this applies to the AVERAGE adult man who doesnt workout, or maybe he runs and does alot of cardio but his muscles arent made to handle weights. It may seem to you and me that 135 is light weight but you cant expect some 240 pound man who only lifted weights for one semester in the 9th grade 20 years ago to be able to bench 135. Lots of people can bench 135, lots of people cant.
@Tuga777 Which is exactally what bodybuilders do, if you watch some old clips of Arnold Schwarzenegger you never saw him doing big heavy weights, but he did controlled, high reps with lighter weight which builds a bigger muscle and a more defined muscle. Powerlifters go for between 3-6 reps with heavy weight which builds a stronger muscle
@LennyRhys Thats not an attitude, that is minimum weight requirement. My max is only 170 but I'm a 5'11 149lb 14 year old who just started lifting so... I look more like a basketball player than anything. (but I play football)
@WarmBeanz yeap the bar has to touch your chest do the reps slowly and thats the proper way to bench press and work with heavy weights (heavy for you that is) this is how to build muscle
I hate barbell bench press... My shoulder clicks out painfully if i take an empty bar down to chest level. I can dumbell press 75's down to chest level tho so i just stick to those
@ddfh01 you might have long arms for your height. I have that problem along with torn rotator cuffs. yes dumbells are the answer. all the way down with shoulder problems on a barbell is just herp derp
@mboyemanster i put up 85's today :D... but yes i do have pretty long arms for my height, i am 6' 1/2" with 35" long arms, and i am only 154lbs. I am a GD beanpole, cant seem to crack 160lbs and that is when I'm taking in around 3500 cal a day
@ddfh01 try gomad if you REALLY want to gain mass. it is surefire but a pretty big commitment though so you'd need to sacrifice something else (like partying for a couple months). #alchemy
@mboyemanster i dont drink at all, one year sober come new years, gave up the distance running for a month and went on gomad, got up to 168. off gomad now but im seriously struggling to get back down to a sub 25min 5km :(
@ddfh01 Within the first year of my weightlifting career I went from 125lbs and benching 135 for my max to 210lbs and benching 225. I basically got fat from eating so much and was strong for my age but not for my weight, so I cut down to 170 and built myself up to 185 over a year, I am not 185lbs and max 310. The best way to gain strength is to put on a decent amount of weight, some will be muscle but most will be fat, then diet. With flawless genes you can put on 10lbs of muscle in one year.
@fitman14 full extension goes to the tricep. if you stop where he stops, thats all chest. when you do the full extension, you get that little rest point where it all goes to your triceps anyway.
@ohkennyy up until you lockout it engages the chest, there is no point in the press where the demand transfers from all chest to all triceps, there is a reason it is called a compound movement. Plus, when you go all the way you work the middle part of your chest, an area a lot of people have problems with
So right after you bench you go straight into incline Pushups? Do you rest in between the other excersizes? Are these all 3 sets of 8? How many pushups should you be shooting for MAX?
@GTMPhantom well for a max amount of pushups you should just go for the highest amount you can do until you physically can not press yourself up anymore, write it down, and try to beat it next time
@wesleykush14 thankyou for writing this!, i get so sick of poeple watching peoples videos of them giving tips trying to help people or doing something they love like weight lifting then u get liers that say i can do this, but no one gives a flying fuck what they can do. its so annoying, theres so many people outthere that go oh i can bench 200 but when it comes to it they cant even do 100, i agree with u totally dude!
@DeDuniel1 im 15 and have got to admit i do 85 kg 1 rep and i feel a little bit of joy lol, but i have only been weight training for about a year and iv never been really naturelly strong, people need to relise it isnt about impressing ppl its about getting fitter, or bigger musles, or more toned ( whatever ur goal is) and enjoying yourself whyll doing it .. . and the challange of improving and getting heavier is what makes it interesting .. but ppl have just turned that into a compotion and lie
@goldmine1995 I agree, all people ask you is "how much can you bench?" if you say "200 pounds" they will call you weak even if they can only bench 5 more pounds than that. The bench press is an important exercise, but its not the only way to judge someones strength. Young athletes tend to only fixate on the bench and nothing else, and they wonder why they never make any progress. Your body is like a tree, your legs are the trunk, if you dont train your legs, then your bench wont explode
@secutorclaudius first of all the pause pres does nothing it actually is easier than regular bench press because youre resting the weight on your chest so that actually hurts you more than it helps you
@geordys1 when i do pause, i don't rest it on my chest, i keep tension, stop for 1 sec then drive up. any movement starting from a dead stop is a lot harder, u ever work out?
@geordys1 oh, i'm a dumbass? even if he is resting it, u said that makes it easier, which it DOESN'T! ever do box squats? deadlifts? it's harder to come up without using the momentum from the negative phase. sure, it maybe easy w 135, but try it w 2, 3 plates. then u tell me it's easier.
@secutorclaudius actually i do use two plates it is much easier when you rest it on your chest. The only way youd be correct would be if he was doing a set of 1 if you do any more reps than that it is much easier to rest it on your chest.
@geordys1 well, yeah, i wouldn't be resting 225 on my chest, that shit would hurt. i couldn't tell if he was controlling it or just sitting on his chest.
@messycumshot Gonna take a while, I started at 85lbs for reps, now I do 125lbs for reps. It took about 10-11 months though I work out every other day and also I didn't always have access to a bench so maybe I could be higher
not trying to rip on ya or anything but they aint drop sets, they're supersets ( setting one exercise with little or no rest in between another exercise) a drop set is starting at a heavy weight for low reps then taking the weight down with out rest and repeating till your thrashed from just pressing the bar for example
I have a question.. say i cant do push ups very easy because i weight 225 pounds and im 14 and only bench 170, well if i just was to work on benching and got to were i could bench like 230 or so would it help out alot with push ups? i really wanna be able to do more pushups but i can usually only do about 5 the right way and if im pissed maybe 10 push ups but its very hard......any info plz?
@yfz450911 bench press helps build your chest your triceps and basically your entire upper body and work almost all of the same muscles as a pushup its almost the exact same motion so yes it will help alot
@iBeSuperFresh did you just turn 14 or are you turning 14 soon because a couple of months ago i was 14 and could hit 135 20 times. but when i just turned 14 i could only hit it about 8 so it depends. if your at the beginning thats good if your at the end its not bad but its not great.
hey thaxs dude, even though I"m doing just girly weight on the bench I've been doing this since I am doing a baby max on the bench and wanted to lift more. I wanted to tell you did a sweet thing on the decline bench doing the negatives today, it was really kool.
haha this dudes a marine with too much time on his hands

@cornnellify are you retarded he is doing fucking negatives... the guy was flying with 225lbs and you are saying he can't do 135
thatfishyguy7 3 months ago
@thatfishyguy7 you're fucking confused. do me a favor and dont just butt in if you're going to sound like an absolute handicapped asshole. Find the goddamn comment you're referring to by me? Dumbass
cornnellify 3 months ago
@cornnellify Well the average man is about 200lbs, also the average man can only bench press 135lbs. I suppose that applies to guys that never workout or maybe guys that only do cardio and no weights
Fx4Ranger2002 2 months ago
@cornnellify I wouldn't call it weak, everyone has to start somewhere.
WeHotBox 1 month ago
@WeHotBox if the objective is to get strong then why wouldn't the low starting point be considered weak?
cornnellify 1 month ago
@cornnellify i weight about 150 and i bench 125, is that weak? im a beginner. and i bench 135 4 sets of 6.
datu0108 1 month ago
@datu0108 better question is "am I strong" to which a clear and definitive "NO!" would be the answer. The more people make these general comments about themselves, the more their egos will be hurt. I'm 230 and bench 350 I am, to some, weak. If a 199lbs dude who benches 450 calls me weak...I'm weak. Wanna get strong, lift more and take advice without defending yourself from a personal attack that you thought occured.
cornnellify 1 month ago

And do rows after a set man.
yourdaddy20192 1 month ago
@datu0108 I say rows after a set to keep the muscles well balanced. My shoulders muscles were being pushed forward and it was affecting my shoulders during my benches causing me pain and popping. I stopped the bench and focused on pull ups and rows. The pain ceased after a 2 months. So don't make that mistake do as many rows as you do bench.
yourdaddy20192 1 month ago
@datu0108 That bench routine worked wonders for me. Just throwing it out there man. Keep it up and you'll be benching with the big boys in no time.
yourdaddy20192 1 month ago
@yourdaddy20192 thanks man, appriciate it, I mean im not really trying to lift like 250 or 300 pounds, im just trying to get big like add like 15 pounds, i want to be like 160 or 170 pounds.
datu0108 1 month ago
@datu0108 Don't worry about dude. Just work out and stay healthy and eat right. You don't have to bench 300 pounds to lift with the big boys you just gotta lift =D.
yourdaddy20192 4 weeks ago
@cornnellify last July I was 205lbs and my Max bench (1 rep) was 115lbs. Now I'm 200lbs and my max is 250.
Go work out people. It's good for the mind and body
joestl314 1 month ago
@cornnellify although 135 is light weight u still can get cut up and bigger by doing a lot of reps look at the guys in jail for example they dont have more than 135lbs and they are bigger than the bodybuilders using steroids
maroboy86 2 months ago
@maroboy86 no one cares about size. Ihave a 650 parallel squat at 228lbs. We care about weight. Being cut or flabby or anything else doesnt matter. This is about pushing more weight. I'm here because my bench is exactly half my squat and needs work
cornnellify 2 months ago
@cornnellify The average adult can only bench press 135lbs, I think this applies to the AVERAGE adult man who doesnt workout, or maybe he runs and does alot of cardio but his muscles arent made to handle weights. It may seem to you and me that 135 is light weight but you cant expect some 240 pound man who only lifted weights for one semester in the 9th grade 20 years ago to be able to bench 135. Lots of people can bench 135, lots of people cant.

Tuga777 2 months ago
@Tuga777 Which is exactally what bodybuilders do, if you watch some old clips of Arnold Schwarzenegger you never saw him doing big heavy weights, but he did controlled, high reps with lighter weight which builds a bigger muscle and a more defined muscle. Powerlifters go for between 3-6 reps with heavy weight which builds a stronger muscle
Fx4Ranger2002 2 months ago
@LennyRhys its good to have enthusiasm
peterpetersbng 1 month ago
@LennyRhys Thats not an attitude, that is minimum weight requirement. My max is only 170 but I'm a 5'11 149lb 14 year old who just started lifting so... I look more like a basketball player than anything. (but I play football)

WarmBeanz 4 months ago
@WarmBeanz lower the weight
FenrirPulse 4 months ago
@WarmBeanz yeap the bar has to touch your chest do the reps slowly and thats the proper way to bench press and work with heavy weights (heavy for you that is) this is how to build muscle

I hate barbell bench press... My shoulder clicks out painfully if i take an empty bar down to chest level. I can dumbell press 75's down to chest level tho so i just stick to those
ddfh01 4 months ago
@ddfh01 you might have long arms for your height. I have that problem along with torn rotator cuffs. yes dumbells are the answer. all the way down with shoulder problems on a barbell is just herp derp
mboyemanster 4 months ago
@mboyemanster i put up 85's today :D... but yes i do have pretty long arms for my height, i am 6' 1/2" with 35" long arms, and i am only 154lbs. I am a GD beanpole, cant seem to crack 160lbs and that is when I'm taking in around 3500 cal a day
ddfh01 4 months ago
@ddfh01 try gomad if you REALLY want to gain mass. it is surefire but a pretty big commitment though so you'd need to sacrifice something else (like partying for a couple months). #alchemy
mboyemanster 4 months ago
@mboyemanster i dont drink at all, one year sober come new years, gave up the distance running for a month and went on gomad, got up to 168. off gomad now but im seriously struggling to get back down to a sub 25min 5km :(
ddfh01 2 months ago
@ddfh01 train legs and youll gain shitload of weight
Hiphopisntdead1 4 months ago
@ddfh01 Within the first year of my weightlifting career I went from 125lbs and benching 135 for my max to 210lbs and benching 225. I basically got fat from eating so much and was strong for my age but not for my weight, so I cut down to 170 and built myself up to 185 over a year, I am not 185lbs and max 310. The best way to gain strength is to put on a decent amount of weight, some will be muscle but most will be fat, then diet. With flawless genes you can put on 10lbs of muscle in one year.
Fx4Ranger2002 2 months ago

@fitman14 full extension goes to the tricep. if you stop where he stops, thats all chest. when you do the full extension, you get that little rest point where it all goes to your triceps anyway.
ohkennyy 5 months ago
@ohkennyy up until you lockout it engages the chest, there is no point in the press where the demand transfers from all chest to all triceps, there is a reason it is called a compound movement. Plus, when you go all the way you work the middle part of your chest, an area a lot of people have problems with

So right after you bench you go straight into incline Pushups? Do you rest in between the other excersizes? Are these all 3 sets of 8? How many pushups should you be shooting for MAX?
GTMPhantom 6 months ago
@GTMPhantom well for a max amount of pushups you should just go for the highest amount you can do until you physically can not press yourself up anymore, write it down, and try to beat it next time
xix1shot1kill 6 months ago
@wesleykush14 thankyou for writing this!, i get so sick of poeple watching peoples videos of them giving tips trying to help people or doing something they love like weight lifting then u get liers that say i can do this, but no one gives a flying fuck what they can do. its so annoying, theres so many people outthere that go oh i can bench 200 but when it comes to it they cant even do 100, i agree with u totally dude!
goldmine1995 6 months ago
@goldmine1995 benching 200 isn´t even impressive. Well, maybe if you´re 15 or so.
DeDuniel1 6 months ago
@DeDuniel1 im 15 and have got to admit i do 85 kg 1 rep and i feel a little bit of joy lol, but i have only been weight training for about a year and iv never been really naturelly strong, people need to relise it isnt about impressing ppl its about getting fitter, or bigger musles, or more toned ( whatever ur goal is) and enjoying yourself whyll doing it .. . and the challange of improving and getting heavier is what makes it interesting .. but ppl have just turned that into a compotion and lie
goldmine1995 6 months ago
@goldmine1995 I agree, all people ask you is "how much can you bench?" if you say "200 pounds" they will call you weak even if they can only bench 5 more pounds than that. The bench press is an important exercise, but its not the only way to judge someones strength. Young athletes tend to only fixate on the bench and nothing else, and they wonder why they never make any progress. Your body is like a tree, your legs are the trunk, if you dont train your legs, then your bench wont explode

secutorclaudius 7 months ago
@secutorclaudius first of all the pause pres does nothing it actually is easier than regular bench press because youre resting the weight on your chest so that actually hurts you more than it helps you
geordys1 7 months ago
@geordys1 when i do pause, i don't rest it on my chest, i keep tension, stop for 1 sec then drive up. any movement starting from a dead stop is a lot harder, u ever work out?
secutorclaudius 7 months ago
@secutorclaudius hes resting it on his cheset not pausing you would be right if it was an inch above his chest not on it you dumbass.
geordys1 7 months ago
@geordys1 oh, i'm a dumbass? even if he is resting it, u said that makes it easier, which it DOESN'T! ever do box squats? deadlifts? it's harder to come up without using the momentum from the negative phase. sure, it maybe easy w 135, but try it w 2, 3 plates. then u tell me it's easier.
secutorclaudius 7 months ago
@secutorclaudius actually i do use two plates it is much easier when you rest it on your chest. The only way youd be correct would be if he was doing a set of 1 if you do any more reps than that it is much easier to rest it on your chest.
geordys1 6 months ago
@geordys1 well, yeah, i wouldn't be resting 225 on my chest, that shit would hurt. i couldn't tell if he was controlling it or just sitting on his chest.

can anyone give me tips on how to increase my bench weight
messycumshot 7 months ago
@messycumshot Gonna take a while, I started at 85lbs for reps, now I do 125lbs for reps. It took about 10-11 months though I work out every other day and also I didn't always have access to a bench so maybe I could be higher
Spartan1844 7 months ago
not trying to rip on ya or anything but they aint drop sets, they're supersets ( setting one exercise with little or no rest in between another exercise) a drop set is starting at a heavy weight for low reps then taking the weight down with out rest and repeating till your thrashed from just pressing the bar for example
hakkenadventure 8 months ago
I have a question.. say i cant do push ups very easy because i weight 225 pounds and im 14 and only bench 170, well if i just was to work on benching and got to were i could bench like 230 or so would it help out alot with push ups? i really wanna be able to do more pushups but i can usually only do about 5 the right way and if im pissed maybe 10 push ups but its very hard......any info plz?
yfz450911 8 months ago
@yfz450911 bench press helps build your chest your triceps and basically your entire upper body and work almost all of the same muscles as a pushup its almost the exact same motion so yes it will help alot

@iBeSuperFresh did you just turn 14 or are you turning 14 soon because a couple of months ago i was 14 and could hit 135 20 times. but when i just turned 14 i could only hit it about 8 so it depends. if your at the beginning thats good if your at the end its not bad but its not great.
