Agreed, the americans did play a key part (especially in the far east) but there's no getting away from the fact that they lost under half a million casualties compared to the russian's 26 million dead.

But the US gave Russia 11.3 billion dollars worth of supplies through the Lend LEase aggreement you also have to think that without US and other Allies in the west all of hitlers forces would have focused on Russia and defeated them
if,for the sake of argument,the germans had produced at the last moment a uranium bomb then the best time to use it would have been on zhukov at the seelow heights.Not right away but after 48 hours when zhukov brought in his reserves.A 15kton strike on a concentration of 1/3 of the red army could have been a game changer.
@rw5791 I find it unlikely, didn't the Germans have an inefficient A-bomb project compared to the Manhatten Project which significantly impeded their efforts at building a bomb? If I recall their method needed too much uranium.
Even had the nuke been dropped on the Red Army it wouldn't have changed the Allies advancement in the West, nor would it have changed that the heart of the Axis army were mostly Hitler Youth and elderly nor would the people forget the discovery of concentration camps.
@Standuble you're partly correct.The germans calculated an A-bomb would require tons of pure uranium so they chose to build a reactor instead to make plutonium.But then they goofed again and experimented with impure graphite which caused them choose heavy water as a moderator and that was easily taken out by allied sabotage.Anyway,it doesn't matter because a plutonium bomb requires an elaborate scheme to achieve critial mass that I doubt the germans would have been able to develop.

The Soviets played a key role, but the Americans not only funded them but gave them supplies etc. I think without the weather the Russians would have lost the war. That and without the second front we created the Germans would have pushed back any counter offensive.

And US wasn't "The Allies" at the time like it's "The NATO" now. Just UK+French losses in the war are bigger then US's.

Im british and it astounds me how the americans think they were the main allied force during ww2.They were indeed a key player, but russia was the nation that really won world war two.8/10 german troops,planes and tanks were sent to the russian front.Imagne how long it would have took(if at all) for the american,british and canadian forces to take the occupied countries if those troops,tank and planes would have been available.Scary thoughts.

@rufcdean Everyone always ignores the Pacific part of the war even though Japan was arguably more brutal and evil then the Nazis could ever be. The commonwealth got kicked out of the pacific by the Japanese in short order and the Soviets biggest offensive against Japan was a last minute land grab against what was left of the Imperial army. It was Chinese and Americans who won that part of the war. The Chinese held them by the nose and the Americans kicked them in the balls.

However US took on Japan almost single handedly, while USSR hardly engaged Japan. So in overall in the entire war (asia + europe) US played the main role while others like UK, Russia or China were involved either against Germany or Japan.

During World War 2 America on the other hand was in Europe fighting to liberate the countries that the Nazis had invaded. During the Same time the United States was on the other side of the planet fighting to liberate the Asian countries that the Japanese had invaded. They rounded up entire villages and towns and massacred every inhabitant because they were 'racially undesirable', locked Soviet POWs in cages and starved them to death, through out Russian villagers naked into the freezing winter and took their clothes and homes, conducted horrific experiments on Jewish and Slavic children in Dr. Josef Mengele's lab. Nightmarish stuff.

But the US gave Russia 11.3 billion dollars worth of supplies through the Lend LEase aggreement you also have to think that without US and other Allies in the west all of hitlers forces would have focused on Russia and defeated them

if,for the sake of argument,the germans had produced at the last moment a uranium bomb then the best time to use it would have been on zhukov at the seelow heights.Not right away but after 48 hours when zhukov brought in his reserves.A 15kton strike on a concentration of 1/3 of the red army could have been a game changer.

@rw5791 I find it unlikely, didn't the Germans have an inefficient A-bomb project compared to the Manhatten Project which significantly impeded their efforts at building a bomb? If I recall their method needed too much uranium.
Even had the nuke been dropped on the Red Army it wouldn't have changed the Allies advancement in the West, nor would it have changed that the heart of the Axis army were mostly Hitler Youth and elderly nor would the people forget the discovery of concentration camps.

@Standuble you're partly correct.The germans calculated an A-bomb would require tons of pure uranium so they chose to build a reactor instead to make plutonium.But then they goofed again and experimented with impure graphite which caused them choose heavy water as a moderator and that was easily taken out by allied sabotage.Anyway,it doesn't matter because a plutonium bomb requires an elaborate scheme to achieve critial mass that I doubt the germans would have been able to develop.

The Soviets played a key role, but the Americans not only funded them but gave them supplies etc. I think without the weather the Russians would have lost the war. That and without the second front we created the Germans would have pushed back any counter offensive.

Im british and it astounds me how the americans think they were the main allied force during ww2.They were indeed a key player, but russia was the nation that really won world war two.8/10 german troops,planes and tanks were sent to the russian front.Imagne how long it would have took(if at all) for the american,british and canadian forces to take the occupied countries if those troops,tank and planes would have been available.Scary thoughts.

The commonwealth got kicked out of the pacific by the Japanese in short order and the Soviets biggest offensive against Japan was a last minute land grab against what was left of the Imperial army. It was Chinese and Americans who won that part of the war. The Chinese held them by the nose and the Americans kicked them in the balls.

However US took on Japan almost single handedly, while USSR hardly engaged Japan. So in overall in the entire war (asia + europe) US played the main role while others like UK, Russia or China were involved either against Germany or Japan.

@taepodong1101 America was on two fronts,but so were the British.We played a secondary role in the asia/pacific theatre yeah,but by no means an insignificant role.We felt the full force of Japan in Burma where many of our troops fought,died but eventually beat the japanesse.Its just not as well documented as the americans involvement in the pacific,but believe me it did happen on a significant scale across india and burma.It has come to be known as the "lost war".

I guess 1,417,000 Japanese soldiers and 1,800 aircraft in Manchuria fighting against Soviets in 1945 don't count for much...but maybe 400K Japanese in Burma, 120K in Okinawa, 40K in Guadacanal, etc(not going to count all the little battles in the theatre) count so much more, i don't know...

@whosthattalking It was USA that brought Japan to its knees not Soviets. Numbers don't count much. Not to mentioned they declared war on Japan 2 days before they surrendered. I am not discounting their contribution but its wrong assumption that US did jack or did not play a major role when they clearly did.

@taepodong1101 actually numbers counted for a lot those days. and nobody is saying that US didn't do anything or didn't play major role in WWII. but "major role" and "almost single-handedly" are not the same things, i think. And it was the US that wanted USSR to start the war with Japan and then went on and nuked them. So it's not like Soviets waited up to the last day of war and then joined in...

@rufcdean During World War 2 the Russians had one priority. Pushing into German. During World War 2 America on the other hand was in Europe fighting to liberate the countries that the Nazis had invaded. During the Same time the United States was on the other side of the planet fighting to liberate the Asian countries that the Japanese had invaded. If the USA hadn't gotten involved your country would have fallen just like the others. Without the USA the allies would have lost, true story bro.

@blizzardtube11 Probally true,but like ive said to many other people on here,we were in the pacific and asia too,and didnt just playa supporting role.And the russians would have had a good chance of beating the germans on there own mate,soit wasnt a certaintly that we were going to get invaded.During thebattle of britain we were weak and still managed to repel the german invasion.The next time round we would have been even stronger,with more planes.Who knows all im saying is give us recognition.

Even when you have Germany by the throat and their gasping for air, they are still incredibly dangerous. Especially when you hear a MG-42 ripping away. And to the dude who said they dragged them out of sewers, that was a young German kid. Germans killed far more Russians than the Russians killed Germans. Germans killed 20 million Russians. I dont think Germany even had 20 million. Not to mention everyone copied the German's Blitzkrieg. Russians are still tough as hell though.

@UStheFA You are right sbout the 20 million killed Soviets( becouse it acount the deaths of the people in Ukrain too) of tose 20 million allmost 13 millon were civilians including jews,gipsies and 1 million captured soldiers at the beggining of operation Barbarosa,these first captured soldiers died of starvation or working in concentration camps.The germans wasted their kill ration shooting civilians in farms and small cities.
Around 6 million Soviet soldiers were killed in combat.

They surrounded their armies by the millions at first. Not to mention Germany was outnumbered heavily. Yea, in Berlin Russians killed more Germans, not in the war over-all.

On one Japanese island nearly all women were raped by Americans. Germans raped Russian and Polish women in brothels that were set up by the Wehrmacht authorities especially for that purpose.
